FAMU to the SWAC....

So do you think SCSTATE would be an asset to the SWAC OR even get a invite.
Probably not at this time. With the drastic loss of students and associated athletic fees, the budget has to take a drastic cut somewhere down the line. Unless a dramatic increase in enrollment is achieved, the SWAC needs to be wary of admitting the school.

If FAMU and Tennessee State joined the conference and were placed in the East Division with Alcorn joining the West, do you think the divisions would be equal or do you think the East Division would be too top heavy with TSU, FAMU, Bama State, JSU and AAMU all in the same division?

Are you crazy! An Eastern division composed of FAMU, TnSU. JSU, MVSU and the Bama schools, all of whom are football weak except FAMU and AAMU, are not as strong as a Western division featuring SU, GSU, AlSU. PV, UAPB, and TxSU, the only weak football team in the West. At the present time, FAMU would clearly be the strength of the East for football and men's basketball, with JSU and AAMU for women's basketball, while the West could counter with SU for football, men's basketball, women's basketball, and baseball and GSU for football and men's basketball, AlSU for football, and PV and TXSU for men's and women's basketball. TNSU has not shown itself to be strong in football, losing last year to both SWAC middle-of-the-roaders, UAPB and JSU.

We aren’t joining to play SU neutral site unless the money is right. The excitement from the game in Tallahassee last season is what really woke people up around here...home and home works so well for this game.

HBCUs need to shy away from the neutral site games. Those days are gone

The ones that are working now are the ones that we need with maybe teams like Valley, UAPB, TxSU, etc. can rotate in the Chicago Classic (and possibly the Circle City Classic) or working on a West Coast Classic or St. Louis and growing the one in Canton

SU/FAMU at a neutral site is hustling backwards. As I said before, FAMU could do like Howard does in soccer (they play their "home" matches in Birmingham) and play against teams like PV, TxSU and UAPB in Mobile or Biloxi/Gulfport with one far trip a year. I think Howard did a two step in soccer and actually play AT JSU and Valley (I called that match. They took notes on our field and possibly wanted to build a similar field house)

This is what happens when you prop up your athletic budget with student fees. If your enrollment takes a hit like SCSU, your budget is gonna take a major hit (BCU's financial woes are due to crooked administrations)

Y’all just leaving Morgan, Norfolk, Delaware State, NCCU & SCSU out to fend for themselves huh lol.

cant forget about Maryland-Eastern Shore and Coppin. I wonder what happens to the northern MEAC schools

I remember the MEAC folk used to think they were better than us because they had a seat at massas’s playoffs every year

Even though they would dog us out, I don’t wanna see them lose their conference

Might I offer a different perspective with this conversation. In my opinionm, I believe FAMU was caught off guard with A&T leaving and this is just a temporary stop using the SWAC to provide stability over the next several years to figure out where to land. I don't feel that FAMU see themselves much different from Hampton, A&T and TSU. Be careful what you wish for. If all is true they are dictating their terms for how they will come in, no penalty if leaving within 5 years? I just say don't let the sweet smell hide the smell of $hit. The SWAC has lead in attendance for all these years because of the stability of the conference and the schools want to be there.

My thought is FAMU with another University with similar size as already in SWAC, with atleast 2 universities in 3.5 hour range . Optimally Tenn St but I don't see that happening. My next choice would be Albany State which gives a 6k student population, stability and Georgia. Moving to D1 maybe tough for them as the 3rd ASU. I think it is time to look at a PWI that fits (it seems). The Argonauts of West Florida have winning DII history, 12k students, destination mapping, perfect mileage addition and a 2nd Florida school. Others that may have varying reasons why they wouldn't want to join or we don't want include:
West Georgia
West Alabama
Mississippi College
Stephen F Austin (oh well)
Mc Neese
Southern Arkansas (small but larger than Valley)

Got to stay ready when it comes to conference expansion, ask the WAC and Big 12. lol

Yeah, I'd take BCU for sure. Their athletics program is nice and a more stable conference could allow them to get their s--- in order.

No, A&T did not catch us off guard. We just brought in a new athletic administration in December. People didn’t pay attention, but if you watch AD Gosha’s Florida Classic breakfast intro, he mentioned Conference Re-Alignment as a possibility...and that was in November...most of us knew A&T was leaving last summer.

We view ourselves on our light...we don’t look at ourselves as being a Hampton, A&T or TSU. All we want to do, is do what’s best for us financially. We’re committed to being a members of the SWAC(pending tomorrow’s vote).

If we leave after 5 years or whatever it may be, it because we see another opportunity that will help be one of, if not THE premiere HBCU athletic program in the country.

FAMU fans have complained for years about the lack of enthusiasm and excitement from contests against schools like Morgan State or Delaware State.

Dont you mean JSU in WBB? JSU girls were 16-2 in conf play.

I say balanced. But EAST wud b loaded just as WEST. A&M is very competitive and JSU beat Tenn State last year and also beat FAMU the last two meetings. Famu beat A&T last year and Tenn State one year fall is always the beginning of another 2-3 years of success. With all that being said, this would just be a hell of a conference. And thats props to all swac schools.

I don't necessarily disagree with your analogy. If FAMU comes in for a few years, so be it! If they come and leave, so be it! I agree that FAMU is not much different than Hampton, TnSU, or NCAT in that regard. They may think of themselves as bigger than the SWAC. If so, then so be it. TnSU and Hampton, imo, have each experienced a decline in their athletic stature as a result of not being in a hbcu athletic conference. They have been largely buried in their respective predominantly white conferences, and seldomly, if ever, win conference championships. NCAT will meet with the same fate. Do these schools actually think these predominantly white conferences are going to allow them to come in and become the cream of the crop of those conferences? For starters, they play footballl before small crowds and are only a blimpe on the radar of the landscape of college athletics. Before Hampton joined the BS Conference, I could not have named a single school in that conference. Similarly, before TnSU's move to the OVC, I knew of only Middle Tennessee. Even their marching bands have lost some pretige, in my estimation. There is a value to playing before large mostly Black crowds. FAMU really finds itself in "no man's land" relative to its location in Northern Florida that has no eastern or southern neighbors. Unless it is going to attempt to form a new conference involving its Florida sister institutions and perhaps some from neighboring Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama, the SWAC is really its only choice, short of staying in the MEAC. If such is their intent, a big question mark exists as to the willingness of white schools in the Sunshine state to follow the lead of a hbcu. I consider myself a fairly avid sports fan and hbcu sports fan, but during last football season, the only games I even remotely paid attention to involving TnSU, were its games against Jackson and Pine Bluff, both of which it lost. By comparison, I cannot name a single game that involved Hampton this past season. If FAMU thinks white colleges and universites are going to give it the respect it deserves and desires, it needs only to look to TnSU, HU. and now NCAT. The grass is not greener on the other side, and neither is the respect.

It’s not about thinking white colleges are gonna give us respect. If that were the case, we would’ve kept giving the SWAC a big “Nah” and waited for the Atlantic Sun. No this is about doing what’s best for us and realizing it’s the best. If at the end of the day, the SWAC doesn’t pay off for us...or we decide to test the FBS waters again, then so be it.

But we are nothing like Hampton or A&T in terms of moving to a PWI conference(which there is nothing wrong with)

This would be interesting.

East Or Southeast
FAMU
BCU
SCSU
Bama St
AAMU
Howard
Morehouse
Tuskegee

West or Southwest
Alcorn
JSU
Grambling
Southern
PVAMU
sTu
UAPB
Valley

I think basketball and baseball would take a big step forward.

Neither of those D2 schools have the finances or the time to move up to D1

If we are talking four team expansion, BCC makes sense. Add Tennessee State and SC State and we are set. SC State being an geographical outlier isn’t as bad when you add the revenue that the Florida schools and Tennessee State would bring.
