The 10 Best College Marching Bands of All Time - Zen College Life

10. Sonic Boom of the South – Jackson State University
If you've had the privilege of watching Jackson State University's Sonic Boom of the South marching band, then you definitely don't need an introduction. This electrifying marching band from Jackson, Miss., puts on a show-stopping performance full of exciting drill designs and diverse musical arrangements. The self-proclaimed "showtime band" has provided music for a wide variety of athletic and ceremonial occasions, ranging from several NFL halftime shows, a Motown 30th Anniversary television special and even an "EA Sports NCAA Football 2005" video game. No matter how visible the Sonic Boom of the South becomes, they have managed to stay grounded in their commitment to playing good music and boosting school spirit.

Do you recognize any of the directors, band members?

Empire premieres on March 28, Acrimony is released on March 30. Looks like a "Cookie" overkill, will people pay $8 to see Cookie on the big screen? I'm predicting the movie will go "belly up." Taraji, needs to decide, television or movies, you can't be successful doing both.

The Jackson State University "Sonic Boom of the South" successfully concluded its Inaugural Pre-Band Camp; it was a great turn out! During that camp the students were academically advised and recieved pertinent information about the university. They also learned basic musicianship practices and standard Sonic Boom literature to get them started on the right track as student musicians! If you're interested in joining the Sonic Boom, please contact any member of the Band Staff right away.

More exciting news will be coming soon about the 2018 rendition of THEE Sonic Boom! Continue to check our social media.

We're "Getting Ready," are you?

After 43 years, the HBCU Dance Team trendsetter and innovator has retired!

Every HBCU has copied something from the Prancing J-Settes. After 43 years at JSU, The Prancing J-Settes sponsor from 1975 to 1997 has retired. The thing I remember the most about the Narah Dean Oatis era, were false eyelashes, pony tails, class, poise, charm and beauty. Oh, and awesome dance routines. I have to give the late Hollis Pippin, J-Settes choreographer, ex-twirler and the believed creator of J-Setting, some credit for those awesome routines.

He started out as drum major. When Helen Ford, who later became Miss Black America, came to J State, the two of them were twirlers who performed with The Boom as The Ebony Twins. At the same time, he was a stern task master as choreographer for the J-Settes. After he graduated and went to Hollywood, Helen became a J-Sette.
