Cable Cord Cutters - Finally ESPN and other sports offered w/ SLING TV

I went to Best Buy Saturday and was talking to one of the young cats who work in there. He told me that you still really need cable for these type of devices. He said basically the shows aren't live. You have to wait for them to be aired then they're posted the next day or some thing. Is this true? How does this device work? Can you just turn to the channels that aren't local and watch them or is it like the internet or something on Hula?

SlingTV streams CNN and ESPN live along with their other network stations. Most local news stations have an app on Roku for their news. Here's one for Huntsville, AL.

Here's a list of other local news stations.

CBSSports streamed the Superbowl live yesterday through their app.

Now Hulu, Neflix, and other apps do air shows the next day, but you don't need a Roku box to access those apps. Most Blu-Ray players and Smart TV's have Hulu, Netflix, Amazon already built-in.

buy an unlocked Amazon fire stick.... you can get them on eBay for about $70..... one time cost plug it into your hdmi port in your tv and you can get EVERY channel ever made... every MOVIE ever made (including porn and movies currently in the movie theaters)... every pay per view.... all FREE. Just make sure you have unlimited data on your wifi plan.

Is this with the Kodi app? Do you need an antenna to see local live tv?

That is cool, so you prefer Sling tv and go ahead and give them the 20 duckies a month than trying to wing it for free on the Amazon fire with the Kodi app? I'm trying to find the easiest way to get my wifey and sons off AT&T to streaming tv

Don't pay $70 for a unlocked Amazon Fire stick. You can get a Kodi Andriod streaming device for much cheaper. Just go to Amazon or Ebay and search for them. I have talked about twenty friends into buying these things and they can't thank me enough. There are tons of online resources and YouTube videos on how to configure Kodi.

I want the same thing. Get my wife and boys off Uverse as well! I just might cut the cord myself.

Cut the cord little more than a year ago. All we have is Internet, Netflix and an unlocked Fire stick/Kodi. Need to invest further on live ESPN. You get some, but not all/the content that matters.

With SlingTV, you can get all the ESPN channels.

I guess I'm still at a lost. I keep hearing folks say they cut the cord, but you are still paying for internet and doing. So it actually sound like you just pay a cheaper price for less services. Is it you pay 60 bucks versus 120?

Man, if I could get my wife off of Discovery ID and Oprah's network, I would go back to no cable. I really don't watch anything on regular cable these days. Netflix keeps me going. I want to swap to Fios internet when the opp comes. Will end up paying about the same price but I will have much faster internet which is more important to me.

So cutting the cord basically benefits those who like watching movies and sports? Lol

in most discussions, "cut the cord" relations to eliminating cable or satellite TV service, and the packages that follows. people would then stick with, add or upgrade their internet connection quality to meet their current internet usage and support their increased online streaming usage.
Netflix = movie streaming, Hulu Plus = TV show streaming, Amazon Prime = no true streaming niche other than free shipping from Amazon.com.

I haven't had cable in about 5 years...and I can still watch anything on tv I want basically. Roku box, playon lifetime membership for $29.99, and netflix is all I need. There's a reddit forum that posts rttp links to all games, all sports and I just use them to make my own roku channel...stream in HD. If I want to watch local, have a digital antenna that catches like 50 channels, HD. Playon is basically what kodi is long before kodi came about.

This pretty much sums it up

If you have comcast as your only option, cutting the cord and going 100% streaming is going to be a fail for you in the near future if it isn't already. I think it's pretty much a given that most cable providers still provide the internet 99% of the time, so all they're going to do is start implementing data caps. Comcast already has around here which is why i'm glad I have Charter.

Yeah. So does U-Verse and most other large providers. Time Warner does not have one either (my territory). I imagine with the blacklash that comes with data caps and the move by most customers to smaller providers that don't have data caps, they will eventually change their tune!
