Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

I'm glad you folk that disagree with these games are not running our athletic departments. We (HBCU's) don't make $500K for 2-3 home games, for the most part, and this one road game does. Recruiting is not gonna suffer because of getting drubbed by a I-A team. Gram hasn't been hurt by it. FAMU hasn't. None of the PWC I-AAs, either. If anything, you'll be more inclined to pull in more recruits, because they know they just might get to line up against a big name power.

This is a business. The bottom line talks. All that other BS runs a marathon. Bama State will have $500K for a road game (assuming it's true). They'll still have their home games to do what they usually do. Y'all thinking like fans. To paraphrase Bob Knight, an A.D. who thinks like a fan usually winds up sitting with them.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

let's be real, NONE of our schools are in a position to walk away from a 500K pay day.

as for the risk of losing players to injuries, heck, you have that risk EVERY game

MH, my biggest issue is that this game proves nothing. It's not like AlaState is stepping up to a challenge. They are just willingly bending over for an azz whooping...a bad one at that. This might be the worst azz whooping in the history of azz whoopings unless Penn State plays their third string the WHOLE game...then they may only beat ASU by 4 TD's.

In JSU's case ..and sometimes Southern's, we have opted to play a lower division game every year to increase our budget. If we entered into a two year contract with Northwestern State for example, we would make approx 180-200K over a two year period by the time we pay for travel to them for the return game. Not bad but not great either (better than a classic though). If you get a 2-year deal for a classic that pays you around 200K, it is actually better than a home-home deal. This is why I am not really a fan of 1-year classic deals. For JSU, we are playing DSU and probably another D2 at home next year. For those home games, we could easily net 400K (average crowd of 15K) over two years (hopefully more). That is not too far from the 500K (and I am sure that ASU has to pay for travel out of that) that you will get from Penn State. Unless ASU is going to get into a good-paying classic, get another 1-A payday, or has a guaranteed home game the next year without a return trip (unlikely), you are STILL looking at the SAME amount of money minus the embarrassing azz whooping.

If my math is wrong or my logic is off (doubtful :) ), please correct me.

I will say that the money is good for the azz whooping though. I certainly would not accept less than the 500K because that would cover two home game but in order for ASU to benefit, they will HAVE to get a home game in Montgomery next year or a classic. If they replace the Penn State game with an away game, the money made from Penn State is null and void.

I disagree with that sentiment. I am all about the bottomline..money. Maybe BAMA State's AD is as smart as TP and has everything lined up for next year. If not, this game is not a financial windfall.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

All I can say is Bama State will get a $500,000 check for their first game in '09. I wonder how much we'll get for playing Delta State for our first game this year?

yeah, because we all have 500K paydays every week during the season.
:scared:

and just how much different is Bama State playing Big 10 Penn State, than FAMU playing Miami (when Miami was Miami  ), or SCSt playing SEC South Carolina, Gram playing Pac 10 Wash St. etc

I agree, I just dont want to see one of your boys get hurt. But like you said, I guess that can happen in any game.

None..they all all stupid.

Again, it is null and void if they lose the money right back the next year. It's all about NET income and in football, you really have to look at things in two-year intervals since that is the norm for contracts. So how much someone is going to make for a first game is moot. Study college football finances 101 and get back with me.

The best financial deal for team is 1:

1. A two-year deal with a 1-A or two back-to-back years playing a 1-A team.

2. A 1-A payout plus a "scheduled down" home game the next year.

3. A 1-A payout plus a decent paying classic the next year.

4. A 1-A payout for at least 400-500K or two-year home game deal with a lower division team that will average 15K fans.

5. A decent (at least 200K) paying classic plus a home game payout the next year.

6. A two-year classic deal with decent payout.

7. A home-home series with a team on your level (unless you have a team that will draw 25-30K fans).

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

BTW, Delaware State is playing Kent State.

ummmm, no it's not

you're trying way too hard to make rocket science outta this.

if you normally get 100 a week, but on one week, you get 500 for the week, that is indeed "a financial windfall".
Even if the next year, you go back to getting 100 a week.
and over that "two year interval" that you speak of, you would still come out ahead, based on that one time you got 500.

You are absolutely correct if you only have 4-5K at your games. If that is the case, get the money and the azz whooping and :D .

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

so, what game does JSU (or other SWAC teams) rake in 500K+?

Also,I am honestly NOT trying hard to make a point. One of the things that gets discussed all of the time is the money JSU makes when SU comes to town. There is nothing you can do about your scheduled conference game...if they bomb, they bomb. However, if JSU lost the SU game, they would have 2 years to make up the revenue because it would ordinarily be a home-home where we would make money one year and spend money the next (travel). Everything is done on a case by case basis so with Penn State being one entity...you have to look at it by that case and IF you can make the same amount over a two year interval because the STANDARD for 1-AA football is home-home series. Therefore, 500K has to equal 500K over two years and it does not matter how you get that 500K. In fact, JSU would need two 1-A payouts to make up for the loss of SU revenue. We could take one 1-A payout to make up for the GSU revenue or schedule down for two years.

You know I am smart, just deal with it...LOL :D

JSU makes over 500K (before expenses) when we play Valley, Grambling, Southern and normally (pre-Bell) Homecoming. Not sure about Alcorn since that is a classic. However, you have to divide that revenue in half since it covers a two-year period and subtract travel expense. That is the point I am trying to make to you. 500K really ain't that hard to NET over two years. I am sure you are getting 500K before expenses from PSU.

see, that's where you go wrong, because a 1A scheduling a 1AA does not fit that standard.
And even if you "schedule down" the year following a 1A "windfall", you'd still come out on top.

and smart aint the word I would use. More like confused.

TP,

You're discounting the availability of scheduling a home game to follow the road game to Penn State. That's $500K one year, and then the home game to make whatever it makes. That game is a stand alone game, and not some game to be packaged into some 2 game scenario. Though doubtful, Bama State could begin scheduling $500K games every year for the next 10 years. Would you still claim that some 2 year scenario is better???

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

If this comes to past it could be a huge win-win. Before the ink is dry, and we step one foot on the bus, it's a given that we're not going to win. It'd be expected for them to put up 50-60 pts. but w/ Ron and Joe Pa's connection...I think he'd do what he could not to "embarass." BTW, I don't get how it's embarassing when it's expected before hand that under dog will lose by a huge margin but hey......
Plus by then, all the talent and speed just signed may be ready to produce, heck it might even be competitive for a qrt. :emlaugh:

If we come away injury free, w/a 500k check and nation wide exposure....

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

Well I guess do whatever as long as they money is good is the philosophy. Pimpin' aint easy but someones gotta do it..

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

Nah, I wouldn't say do whatever. Just that there's no difference in this game and the pre-season b'ball schedules most HBCUs play. All of those games are routs. So if you're going to be somebody's tune up game, at least get paid handsomely.

It's just in f'ball, the probability of getting your guys broken up is higher.

Keep striving to get to the next level... These $500K payday are what we need. Hopefully someday, our Athletic Departments will operate outside of the General Fund. That is hampering us more than many realize.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

For years, we have fought over the 'table scraps' left by big-time college football. We made big deals out of recruiting 1-A transfers (or rejects) and welcome them with open arms.. We get fiercely defensive over the Bayou, Circle City, Magic City, Southern Heritage and Florida Classics, and we scratch and scrape over the monies we get from them... Our basketball teams play on the 'chitlin circuit' every fall, travelling from coast to coast, playing 'money' games just to keep the lights and water on......

And we're content with all of that......

But when somebody (in this instance, PennState) offers one of our schools an OPPORTUNITY (or an azz-whooping, whatever you wanna call it), we're still griping.... :argue:

Alabama State has an opportunity to ELEVATE all of our schools, by having a DECENT showing against the Nittany Lions... Yeah, they'll probably lose. But they got the chance to line-up and play..... And get PAID!!!!!

I say 'kudos' to all the schools that are taking the chance to play these big schools..... Grambling, South Carolina State, FAMU, whoever else.....

We've always wanted a shot.....

We got it now.

STFU and go play......

And then go to the BANK....

:dude:

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

Whose to say that Penn St. would beat Bama State 60-0? Does ASU even get the benefit of the doubt of making the game respectable? Do you really expect such a low performance from a SWAC contender football program? Would you still be as appauled if another D1 FCS (PWC) took the game, such as a New Hampshire or Georgia Southern?

OK...56-6...is that more viable for you? The rest of those questions..are you serious? I guess it'll depend on whether or not PSU takes out their starters in the 2nd or the 3rd quarter.

The year LSU won their national championship,2003, they only beat App. State 24-0.
