Special prosecutor Angela Corey said Monday she will not take the Trayvon Martin shooting death before a grand jury.

Corey said her decision to skip the grand jury shouldn't be considered a factor in determining whether charges will be filed against George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who has admitted to fatally shooting the unarmed Martin.

The announcement means the decision on charges now rests solely with Corey, who had a reputation for not presenting cases before grand juries if it wasn't required. Under Florida law, only first-degree murder cases require the use of grand juries.

Corey took over the case last month after the prosecutor who normally handles cases out of Sanford recused himself. That prosecutor, Norm Wolfinger, had originally called for the case to be presented before a grand jury.

"From the moment she was assigned, Ms. Corey noted she may not need a grand jury," said a statement from Corey's office.

I remember when the prosecutor (the one that recused himself) called for the Grand Jury and Benjamin Crump (Martin family attorney) stated he didn't want the grand jury he wanted a public trial. So this isn't a completely bad thing...

Michigan authorities on Monday launched an investigation after a racial slur targeting Trayvon Martin was discovered on an electronic construction sign along a Detroit-area interstate.

Michigan State Police told NBC News affiliate WDIV-TV that someone hacked the road sign along I-94 around 1 a.m. Monday and posted "TRAYVON A N*****".

Martin was shot to death by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, at a gated community in Sanford, Fla. on Feb. 26. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense, telling police Martin attacked him. Martin was unarmed.

Florida prosecutor to release new information in Martin shooting

The special prosecutor investigating the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in Florida said Tuesday evening that she was preparing to release new information on the investigation, and would do so in the next 72 hours. On Monday, prosecutor Angela Corey said she would not convene a grand jury probe. The U.S. Justice Department is also looking into the case.

The announcement comes just a few hours after the attorneys for George Zimmerman, the Florida community watch volunteer who shot Martin, said they have lost touch with their client and are withdrawing from the case.

Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig said at a news conference outside the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, Fla., they heard that Zimmerman had contacted a special prosecutor, who will decide whether or not to press charges against him, against their advice.


They said they have not talked to Zimmerman, whose location is not known, in at least two days but in the past had spoken with him over the phone. “We can’t represent him unless he comes forward and asks us,” Uhrig said.

"We have a pretty good idea where he (Zimmerman) is," Uhrig said, but added that Zimmerman is not answering the phone. The attorneys said they thought Zimmerman was still in the United States, but not likely in Florida.

Uhrig said Zimmerman had called Fox News talk show host Sean Hannity, which also worried them. "We believe he spoke directly to Sean," Uhrig said. Fox News representative Dana Klinghoffer declined to elaborate to NBC News on the nature of Zimmerman's relationship with Hannity, saying it would be addressed on the show.

On Tuesday evening, Hannity said he had been pursuing an interview with Zimmerman and eventually spoke with him several days ago. Hannity said Zimmerman talked about the case but asked the talk show host not to divulge details on air.

The special prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin case will announce criminal charges against George Zimmerman Wednesday afternoon, a law enforcement official told NBC News.

The nature of the charges weren't immediately known, the official told NBC News Justice Department correspondent Pete Williams, speaking on condition of anonymity. But because Angela Corey, the special prosecutor appointed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott to re-examine the case, previously announced that she wouldn't take the case to a grand jury, first-degree murder is not an option/

Authorities in Sanford, Fla. — where Zimmerman, 28, a neighborhood watch volunteer, shot Martin, 17, on Feb. 26 — also began preparing for an announcement from Corey, NBC station WESH of Orlando reported. Seminole County sheriff's deputies spent Wednesday morning setting up barricades along the booking area for new inmates at the county jail.

A federal civil rights investigation is also under way, but U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that the Justice Department had to meet a "high bar" to bring any charges.

The main federal role is to "support the state in its ongoing investigation," Holder told reporters Wednesday morning in Washington. At the same time, he said, the Justice Department is conducting its "own thorough and parallel investigation" to try to resolve the case "in as fair and complete a way and as quickly as we can."

It's babd when people don't trust the legal system AT ALL.....I'm with you Jstate....justice is not blind...she sees what she wants to see in HD!

George Zimmerman now has new counsel, but he is in custody, and they are not saying where!!!

SANFORD, Fla.—George Zimmerman, the neighborhood-watch volunteer who fatally shot unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida is in custody in Florida and will be charged with second-degree murder, a law-enforcement official said Wednesday.

Special prosecutor Angela Corey will announce the charge against the 28-year-old Mr. Zimmerman at a 6 p.m. EDT news conference, the official told the Associated Press.

Ms. Corey had said late Tuesday, after Mr. Zimmerman's attorneys announced they were withdrawing from the case, that she would have an announcement on charges within 72 hours.

The two attorneys said they no longer were representing Mr. Zimmerman because they haven't heard from him since Sunday.

"As of the last couple days, he has not returned phone calls, text messages or emails," attorney Craig Sonner said. "He's gone on his own. I'm not sure what he's doing or who he's talking to."

On Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder also said the Justice Department is conducting a thorough and independent review of the case after launching its own investigation three weeks ago.

Mr. Zimmerman said he shot Mr. Martin in self-defense after following the teenager in a Sanford, Fla., gated community outside Orlando on Feb. 26. He said he was returning to his truck when Mr. Martin attacked him and that he shot the unarmed teen during the fight. He wasn't arrested partly because of Florida's "stand your ground" self-defense law, which gives people wide leeway to use deadly force.
 
This is a good step, but remember what Richard Pryor said:

We go to court looking for JUSTICE and what you find in JUST US.

Also...when Zimmerman is found guilty will the whites riot like after the OJ verdict??????

True, but the Blacks in Tulsa, Oklahoma had shot guns then, but no match against bombs being dropped from bi-planes. Some of these racist groups are more armed and better equipped than most small country's military.
