jaydog, why don't you give us your qualifications (definition) of Big Band Sound?
The Big Band Sound most of us from JSU are talking about is the type of arranging that originated with Prof. Davis who was actually in Cab Calloway's actual Big Band. His style of arranging which he passed down to people like Harold Haughton was based on the actual Big Band arranging. It was more jazzy, swing style of arranging that JSU had mainly in the 60s, 70s, and somewhat in the early to mid 80s. If you want to know some examples of songs that are still played in Davis / Haughton's Big Band style think of JSU's current arrangements of Glad and Spirit, which were written way back in th e60s. Also a song like Black & Blues and JSU's Take Me Out To The Ballgame (which I don't think has been played in over 10 years). They even had a few more recent arrangements (Me & Mrs Jones & Turn Out the Lights are closest.)
The Big Band sound was a result of the style or type of arrangement. That wasn't it. That was just a nice, typical R&B song. Their was no Big Band flare or style to it. I'm from JSU, I'm not trying to rag on dude, I'm just saying.
Watcha think about that Big Band swing on " Big Balln' "??...

So you're saying Dowell Taylor's arrangements were not of the "Big Band Sound"?
Nope. Didn't say that. Just talking about that one that was picked. They just picked a bad example.
I did mention Black and Blues which I believe was written during the Taylor era. But most popular music itself changed heavily in the mid 80s. The birth of rap music, more pop sounding R&B, etc. It just didn't have as much jazz influence as music from the 70s and 80s. Part of it is just the style of music. I don't know how much swing you can put into "Do the Booty Do"
i know this is going to sound stupid, but i thought the "big band sound" meant all instruments played at the same time.
Knowing Doc he'd probably put all of ya'll uniforms in a pile and piss on it. Then walk out, light a cigarette, then say it's gon be alright!!!
I can imagine him "going down the line" and snatchin lil' Walters trumpet.... "THIS:lecture: is how you play a trumpet"
For those of you who need some idea of the Boom's Big Band Sound. I wasn't able to find the definitive examples that I was looking for, but I did find some remnants.Oh okay. That's your qualifications for Big Band Sound. Like I said....my people.

The things that you will notice most obviously in these clips are:
- Top trumpets only occasionally taking things up an octave so as to accentuate certain hits - like a big band.
- No trumpets hanging over.
- The sonority of the alto and tenor voicings.
- The instrumentation, particularly just enough bass.
This is from the year before I got to Jackson. Even SHAME has a Big Band sonority.

Co-signThat's when JSU actually march... Some of these cats on here from JSU would have never made them bands with their lazy arses...

That 78 JSU band was a monster. I remember that year well. The Boom had a certain groove to it back then.
Still does, it's called swagger now.

Don't know what to think about today's Swagger you are referring to.
Murry is the Current Interim, do you think he'd leave JSU someone else is offered the job?

Finally someone that knows what they are talking about! Someone who actually played in the "Sonic Boom" during the "Big Band Sound" era at JSU and not someone who played in a Liddell version of the "Sonic Boom". :noidea:
