MAN!! What kinda of lame stuff is that??? Everyone is talking about where are they going to play, not who benefits by having who on their schedule.

PLEASE READ THE THREAD.

Southern and Jackson State needs each other.

This is one of the biggest games of the season for both teams.

Bottom line is the game is too big to be played in Mumford.

Jacksons Memorial Stadium can handle the crowd.

The game should either be played at LSU, the Superdome for Southern Home games.

"L" why not hold it in Jackson annual, with a 50/50 gate split. Southern bring atleast 30,000 fans to Jackson for this game so the home field factor is almost non-existent.

From what I understand about Culberson, he would let you keep all of your money on the year it is your home game if you move it to Jackson. You might just have to pay JSU for using our deal on the stadium which is next to nothing.

Culberson made the same deal with Valley but those dummies refused. We are working on getting that type of set-up for Alcorn. I don't know why he does not like 50/50 splits because if basically works out even but that is just the way he thinks.

Televised

This game should be on television every year. What other game besides a "classic" pulls the kind of crowds in BCF besides JSU/SU??? I think that this game is the best kept secret in BCF. It deserves national exposure.

Since it sounds like JSU is still a SWAC game and it is SU's home game next year, the game needs to be in Baton Rouge (Mumford or LSU). To heck with giving JSU the right to neutralizing our home field advantage while they still play at home (though we bacically own Memorial). We're going to NO's already for more than one game and the city totally disrespects us. Why in the heck would we go back for and get more disrespect? Why would JSU want to subject either of our fans to NO's legalized highway robbery? SU is making money at home. We probably could make more at LSU. I don't see any logic in taking our home game to New Orleans..

PEACE!!!

Hey ZNSPR8502

You can kiss that LSU-stuff goodbye. They don't want you on their dayum campus.... They won't even play Southern. What makes you think they'll let you come use their Stadium......

And.....The only reason why playing in Jackson was discussed in the first place, was because the Superdome isn't going to be an option for Southern next year. And the crowd is too big for Mumford.... And Jackson is a logical choice. Southern fans might not agree, but it is. And it's cheaper. Look at my first post on this thread.......

Hey, you make it sound like I'm pushing for SU to play at LSU. You all spend to much energy reading into comments. There are two main things I'm saying:

1) To hell with taking our home game to the opponent. I don't care if we have dominated them in their on stadium. You have to be crazy to play your home game in the opponents home stadium, especially when you are taking the team, band, and everyone else on the road thereby creating more expenses. I'm from MS and it gives me another chance to see family when we play there. So, I don't have any problems playing in MS, just not an SU home game against JSU.

2) the LSU comments was simply saying if the stadium was available and the price wasn't outrageous, it made a hell of lot more sense to play there than Jackson. You drive across town and come back after the game. Not much more expense than playing in Mumford.

3) Playing 3 games in New Orleans in the same year is also dumb in my opinion. I haven't found anyone yet that went to the game last year in the dome that didn't say it just wasn't the typical SU/JSU game due the venue. New Orleans doesn't respect us, so why would we take more games to them?

4) Finally, if everyone realizes SU needs a bigger stadium, then demand that the project be kicked off to enhance it as you began to increase your specified contribution towards the project.

PEACE!!

I think LSU would be a great location. Hell play that game on a Thursday night on a national ESPN broadcast. The situation is the mere fact of a HOME game, meaning allowing our home fans the opportunity to be at the game.

Just a thought...lol

Do Whatchu wanna.....

Seems that some people don't want to move the game from Southern, and that's cool. You guys do have a decided advantage when you play at Mumford. But I think you have to ask the question, "Is home-field advantage worth not capitalizing on a game that will clearly draw 50,000+?" And I think the logical answer is 'no'. But with the 'no', the choices of where to move the game become limited. LSU is not an option. And somebody mentioned having ESPN broadcast the game. That's highly unlikely, next to impossible. How many regular-season 1-AA games did ESPN(or any ESPN Network) broadcast this season? None... You know why? Because there's more money to be made broadcasting 1-A teams. ESPN doesn't even broadcast the 1-AA playoffs. What makes you think they're going to turn-down a 1-A game, just to show a 1-AA game. That won't happen. And with more 1-A schools now playing on Thursdays, it won't happen anytime soon. So TV with ESPN is out.

And maybe Jackson isn't the best choice for Southern fans, so I'll stop lobbying for it. But I do think Jackson presents more 'positives' than 'negatives'. And the Southern Admin. knows it, even if you guys don't. And as far as the Classic idea goes, it doesn't make sense to turn the game into a Classic. You aren't going to draw more prople because your call it a 'Classic'. The game is already huge, so why hire a promoter? Why give the money to someone else, who takes his cut, and then gives you money? And even if he gives you a guarantee, that doesn't mean the check's in the bank before you load the buses to go play. Go ask your Athletic Director when you get checks from Classics. He's going to tell you there's a contracted timetable involved. And the promoter has a timetable surrounding the game, to get the check to the school. A guarantee doesn't neccessarily mean you'll get the money upfront. It means that you'll get the money.

And yeah, home games are normally defined as games played at that team's HOME stadium. Now, a SWAC game is different. With the current format, the JSU/SU game may not count in the SWAC Divisional Standings, but it's still going to always be somebody's HOME game, regardless of where the game is played. We could play in New Iberia in the swamps, and it'll still be Southern's home game. So, know the difference..

But wherever we play next year is fine to me. If we play in Mumford, fine. Jackson, fine. I don't see it really going anywhere else.

Taylor,

What are you basing your statement about LSU not being an option on? IMO, I think that LSU would listen to a proposal to allow SU use Tiger Stadium. Skip Bertman, the current AD, is all for doing whatever he can to help grow college athletics at all state schools. Historically, I would say that using Tiger Stadium is out the of the question,(although SU play FAMU in Tiger Stadium back in the 70's) but I don't think the same could be said today.

Re: Do Whatchu wanna.....

Thanks Cat Daddy for posing the same questions to Taylor-Made I wanted to ask. Taylor, you made the statement twice that Southern would not be allowed to play at LSU and you said it so definitely that I want to know whys, wherefores also. Do you have some inside information regarding this matter? If yes, can you elaborate? Or is this just an opinion you formed based on a hunch or speculation or pre-supposing?

I know that the athletic departments at both schools are very ameniable to each other. There is a joint press luncheon kicking off the football season that is hosted by the City of Baton Rouge. The coaches appear on many newscasts together and other public events. LSU's AD Skip Bertman (former baseball coach) and Southern's baseball coach Roger Cador are friends and see each other and speak with each other frequently. The Chancellors of both campuses appeared on a local morning shows several times this past semester and do joint charitable functions in the names of the universities. There is no dire animosity towards us like you describe, well not on that level anyway.

So I cannot see using, renting LSU's stadium as some far fetched idea that would NEVER happen like you think. There are strong supporters, like Cat Daddy, for the Bayou Classic to be played at LSU and Shreveport. So the use of Tiger stadium has been discussed many times before.

Please advise.

Well, it's a lil bit of both.....

But I'll try to clairfy. My statements about LSU not being an option come primarily from the history that the SWAC has had when it comes to negotiating with LSU. Now the SWAC Baseball Tournament has been held in Baton Rouge on numerous occasions. And the SWAC Committee is charged with negotiating and securing facilities when SWAC events aren't held at SWAC-member campuses. And there have been discussions with LSU over the last few years (post '95) in regards to renting/using LSU facilities. And the discussions have always been cordial, but the outcomes have always been the same. The answers have been 'no'. And the 'feeling' is, that LSU is not amenable to allowing the SWAC to user it's facilities. And LSU's not the only shcool. And I don't want to sound like I'm singling them out, 'cause I'm not. But the SWAC has had the same type of feeling about the Univ. of Houston and Rice Univ.

All I'm saying is that the history shows that they haven't been very cooperative, and it's a logical assumption that THAT will continue. Now maybe things are different. New Athletic administration and a sense of cooperation between LSU and Southern might very well be the foundation we need. And maybe their stadium isn't an ABSOLUTE, how it once was.

But I know that in past dealings (primarily with Baseball and Indoor Track), LSU hasn't been very accomodating. And they don't have to be. And it's fine if they aren't. I'm not hating on them at all. I've been to their campus and to their stadium for one of their games, and they were very hospitable. But being hospitable doesn't always translate into accommodation and cooperation. That's all. And their history suggests that they won't be now..........So I say why bother..........

My involvement comes from being a student worker in the Athletic Director's office when I was in school. I learned alot about conference politics. And the Athletic Directors get together with conference officials to discuss and plan conference tournaments, and dialog goes back and forth about locations, and accomodations and such. And since graduating, I've still had an 'ear' into that office, and have learned about delvelopments that affect JState and the SWAC. And I contribute to the Athletic Department, so I have a voice (sometimes). But I haven't been introduced to Culberson yet, but I'll meet him soon enough. I've got some ideas about JState football for next year.

One of things I encourage everyone to do, is to become involved in Alumni and Athletic Affairs. I've learned and seen so much.....

LSU AND SOUTHERN are both state insitutions, there shouldn't be a rent fee but we can expect to cover other expenses.

You bring up an interesting point BG. That is my biggest issue concerning the BC in New Orleans. I really don't care about the hotel costs because I view it as a simple case of supply and demand. BUT when it comes to the cost of renting the dome, I think that is where we need to be focusing our attn. We (SU and GSU) are paying over 300K to use a State owned facility. I wonder how much the LHSAA is paying to use the dome for the high school championship games that are played in the dome every December?

Hey Cat.....

That's a good question you rasied about the cost of playing in the Dome. If you guys are paying upwards of $300,000.00, then how do you make any money? And I'm certain the LSHAA isn't paying anywhere near that much for the High School Playoffs......But I'd like to know the answer....

Southern is a public state school, have always been.......

So a grand total of 6 teams play on Thursday nights says that we can't find a broadcasting company between 3 ESPN networks, 6 FoxSports affiliates, and several regional broadcasters to carry major Black College Football on a football-less Thursday evening. Im sorry I can't agree with Tayler-Made logic.

LSU and Southern have an excellent relationship. Southern is there for Baseball, Tennis, Basketball, and they can use the Indoor Football Practice Facility whenever they want. The only thing that will keep us out of Tiger Stadium is the night or weekend that LSU is home. Other than that it's a freakin phone call to Skip Bertman to set it up. The Thursday night game would get at least 71,000 in the stadium with about 15,000 of Jaguar Fans' White Coworkers (lol) along with MikeBigg and his buddies. Since the damn place holds 91,215 people I think they could fit.

Now that theory thing about not using the LSU Baseball facility for the SWAC tournament falls in that we play the SWAC tourny a month before baseball season is over. So LSU usually has home games or they are practicing. We are the stupid ones having our teams sit out for a month to go to the NCAA's. We have had the last couple of indoor track events at the Field House, so that point Taylor-Made gave is a little off.

Well, I don't know if it would be THAT easy, lol...but I do think that it is very possible for LSU to allow Southern to play in Tiger Stadium. However, I'm sure LSU would, in some shape or form, take a big slice of the money made.

I'm in grad school at LSU, and I don't think most people here "look down" on Southern or anything like that. I know that the SGA's of both schools sponsored an event up here a couple of months ago, and I've seen articles in the student newspaper here that discussed a new "alliance" between the two schools.

But Tiger Stadium would be perfect for SU/JSU. I hope that it can happen one day...

You don't agree?......fine.......

The Jagster doesn't agree with my logic. That's cool.

But explain to me how you're going to convince ESPN to not show Thursday-night games involving the Big East, ACC, PAC-10, WAC, and C-USA( I don't know where you got the 5-team deal from)And then pick up a SWAC game? Where are the network sponsors for that proposal? I hope they're all in Baton Rouge somewhere waiting on your phone call. And as I recall it, there were games every Thursday night this season, so when would there be a football-less Thursday?

Listen, I'm getting out this argument about this game next year. If you say Southern and LSU are tight like that, THEN MAKE THE FRIGGIN PHONE CALL AND SET IT UP!!!!!

I'll wait for the press conference..............

TM90:
SU and GSU each make about $1 million from the Classic. We should make more (and will next year) but the game is profitable.

You guys are getting raped.......

It's good to know you're making that kind of money, but the Dome and New Orleans is straight raping you guys on the $300,000.00. Then there's the hotel and parking thing, too? I'm glad y'all got it like that.
