Where is Southern playing (Football) Jackson State in 02? Baton Rogue or New Orleans

A November 4, 2001 article in the Advocate entitled "Southern Notebook" indicated that SU would play 3 games next year in the Superdome (Grambling, Jackson State and Tulane). The article was quoting excerpts from an interview with SU's A.D. Floyd Kerr.

I hope that isn't true. 3 trips to NOs. This is getting out of hand. Heck, SU vs JSU is a game that can hit the road (Dallas or Chicago) are excellent options. If not, it needs to be in BR. One game in New Orleans makes sense. 2 is acceptable considering who it is. 3, forget it.

PEACE!!!

I don't think it would matter. JSU and Southern both have strong alumni in both cities. The impact on getting quality athletic recruiting out of the game would be better in Dallas. But, I think the game would sell out Soldier Field or Texas Stadium/Cotton Bowl.

Bottom line, I'd rather it be in Mumford than to be 1 of 3 games in New Orleans. If it going to be a game to capitalize on money (thought for it being in New Orleans), it needs to go to Chicago or Dallas. Yet, I also agree with Coach Richardson, SU needs to be careful with the number of games we are moving from Mumford to other locations. Yes, it is bring us more money, but it takes its toll on the players having to travel darn near every week.

PEACE!!!

Bottom line: MONEY

Moving the game to NO allows SU to make more money because SU keeps all the money. If you make this game a classic, they have to split the money with JSU and the promoter. They could make more money at Mumford if that is the case. Therefore, the game will be in NO or BR. We would never take to game and give the money to a promoter. I agree, that that game would take over a city like Chicago or St. Louis but it will never happen.

The Superdome is designated as SU's official second home stadium. If Mumford cannot accomodate, it will always go to NO (if available).

3 games in NO will have an impact on 1 or 2 of those game's attendance. Only the locals are going to make that trip 3 times. SU isn't the Jaguar Nation just by having locals at the games. Moving home games to NO gives the OPPORTUNITY to make more money. There are expenses involved with going to the Superdome also. A game like The Classic, Jackson State, and TnSU all individually are probably easy to make the money back in expenses and make enough to exceed what we would make at home without the expenses. Having 3 of them in NO will jeapordize raising enough money to pay the added expenses and still exceed what we would have profited in Mumford stadium. That is the only way SU moves a game from Mumford.

The same is true for what was referenced as Classics. I didn't say anything about a Classic, but if they want to make it a Classic so be it. Anytime SU moves there home game to a remote site, they are guareented and deposit a cashiers check for an amount that exceeds the home profits. I'm not sure how additional money is handled, but I know we have our money safely deposited before we show up when we move our home games. All travel expenses are taken care of by whoever is bring us to the city. If the city/promoter isn't willing to do business our way, we simply play our home game at home. SU is never in a position to make less when we move our home games.

Peace!!!

I really hope we aren't going to New Orleans again. It seems crazy to me to make a commitment to a city that we are saying doen't treat us right. If New Orleans is so bad, why bring them more money. I say let's stay at home until New Olreans brings good deals to the table. I wasn't happy to see all of those $100.00 plus room rates for the SU/JSU and SU/Tulane games. My sister went to a PWC and her school plays Tulane in New Orleans. They get room rates far below what we paid for these 2 games (I won't even mention the Bayou Classic rates).

They'll play in Jackson.....and I'll tell you why

Don't be surprised when Southern annouces that it's home game against JState will be moved and played in Jackson. And I'll tell you why.

Before the 10/13 game in Jackson, officials from Southern met with The City of Jackson, JState, and the Stadium manager, about the possibility of moving the game to Jackson next year (2002)

The facts are: The Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge is too small to accomodate the crowd. Even a sellout isn't good enough. And playing at LSU is out of the question. They don't want you on their campus. And last year, the game was moved to the Superdome at the last minute, with help from JState(securing the Dome for the game). But playing in the 'Dome isn't cost effective. SU still has to pay rent for the facility, which ain't cheap($30,000-40,000). And then there's the whole hotel issue. They jack up the prices something ridiculous down there. So nobody makes any money playing there, no matter how much you might like the 'Dome. And since the game is so big, neither school is going to agree to make the game a Classic, because then the schools lose money. The promoter makes the money. And JState's not going to agree to move to game to Dallas or Chicago or anywhere. And I think Southern knows that too.

The logical choice is to play the game in Jackson every year. The Stadium seats 62,000. And the stadium fee is less than $15,000. And, Jackson doesn't have the Hotel laws that allow hotels to jack up the prices... And let's face it, more Southern fans can see Southern play in Jackson than they can in Baton Rouge. And it's an easy drive from Baton Rouge to Jackson.

I think what needs to happen is this: Southern and JState will sit down and work out the details. The two schools can split the gate after expenses, with JState getting an extra percentage every other year. The game is the biggest draw in the SWAC. The City of Jackson would probably agree to cover the stadium fee, allowing the game to be 'free' next year. And then the ticket sales would reimburse Southern's travel expenses, and still give them money from the game....And JState gets money for not having to travel, but gets an extra gate percentage every other year.

It's the same concept JState and Valley used.

You'd have a guaranteed sellout each year, with plenty of parking and tail-gating space(for the SU Nation).

It may be closer to happeneing than you think. I know they've met about at least once, and that was before the game....

Don't think Mayor Harvey Johnson won't pull the trigger on a deal like that................. You could call him Quick-Draw..................

Playing in jackson sounds good to me.

The trip to jackson and memorial Stadium are very enjoyable.
I could see the game being played there yearly, but I don't think Pete likes giving up home field advantage. Coaches don't look at the money.

I'd be one pissed off soul if JSU moved a game to another school's stadium. More money or not. But I ain't the one that's gotta worry about the bottom line.

If SU is talking with Memorial Stadium about a deal to play JSU there, SU/JSU must not be a SWAC game next year. So, that would make sense to investigate locations including Jackson to which both schools would split profits and expenses, since this is one of both school's biggest games in terms of money and competition.

You all must don't understand how Classics are suppose to work. You don't go into a Classic or move your home games unless you are GUARANTEED to PROFIT more than you would make at home. I'm not saying COULD MAKE MORE. I'm talking about in the bank, cleared, then you travel and play. It is the promoters job to make his money back.

LSU has been out of the question in recent years, because they are playing at home almost every weekend SU is playing at home. It was the first option over the dome, but it wasn't available.

PEACE!!!

I personally could never support SU taking its home game to Jackson or any other school, for that matter. To do so would be to stoop too low. I would rather play at LSU or even cancel the game before moving it to Jackson. For me, such a move would be an insult of unforgiving proportion.

Sometimes it is not good to try to get "to much" out of something. I would like to see how much more we would make (Net, not Gross) by moving the game from Mumford to somewhere else and having to split the gate and pay expenses. I feel that we fans "deserve" to have 5 games at home. All that traveling takes a toll (even to NO) . Unless they can make lot of extra money, and do something specific with it, I am not for it.

The Accounting Issue......

Gooddoc raised a good question about the recent attendance discrepancies at MVMS. JState has been at odds with the Stadium Commission for years about game attendance figures. JState wasn't satisfied with the annouced attendance figures at home games. They started rectifying this several years ago when they contracted ticket sales to Ticketmaster. So the sitution is a little better now, than what it used to be. Before, the Stadium printed and distributed tickets (the old red, blue, pink, green ones). Then all ticket monies got turned into the Stadium, and then they distributed money to JState based on ticket sales. And their numbers were always suspect. JState complained and lobbied the State Legislature. The Legislature then mandated that JState have at least one seat on the 5-member Stadium Commission(the Comm. had been all-white, even though Ole Miss and MissState don't play there anymore, only JState). And with that, JState had a voice in the handling and counting of tickets and ticket money. So it got a little better. Then JState turned the tickets over to Ticketmaster, and it's gotten even better. And while the turnstile numbers can still be debated, the money from ticket sales suggests something else. And next year (2002), JState stands to gain even more. Another member of the Stadium Commission's term will expire, and a new member will be named. And that person will probably come from the Jackson Bandits Hockey Team, who's going to build a Hockey Arena at the Stadium. And the good news for JState is that the Bandits have had the same ticket concerns from playing at the Mississippi Coliseum. And now they've gone to Ticketmaster also. So, in the long run, the new member should serve to help JState.

And I do believe that next year's JState/SU game will not count in the SWAC standings. But both schools have agreed in principle to keep playing each other anyway. So SU may not really lose anything by trying to move the game. But I do understanding the rationale behind not wanting to give up home field advantage.....I feel that.............

And as far as Classics go, the JState/SU game should never be made into a Classic. The game itself is such a big draw, and involving a promoter just slices up the pie more than it already is. It is true, that with Classics, the schools get guarantees, and have their expenses paid. Then they just show up and play. But in the case of a big game already, the schools lose. Unless a promoter comes with a ridiculous guarantee amount. And most Black promoters can't guarantee that kind of money. Here's an example, two years ago, I believe, Grambling played Univ. of Louisville, and got paid well over $150,000 for a regular game. No classic. The guarantee came from Louisville. Not from a promoter. I think both schools now make more money playing the game how it is. The home team makes all the money. The only concession I see to that, would be if they agreed to play in Jackson, where the crowd could be larger, and split the gate and expenses. SU doesn't lose in that situation. You make more more than you'd make in Baton Rouge, and you'd make money every year, as opposed to coming to Jackson every other year and having 50-55,000 and not making a dime. And only making money when you sellout 25,000-seat Mumford(minus the student tickets--you don't make a dime there).

I say, get involved in Alumni politics, 'cause they determine alot of things involving games and where they're played............

I still say that I would rather cancel the SU/JSU game or play the game at LSU than move it to Jackson. To move the game to Jackson would be completely unacceptable to me.

If SU and JSU isn't a SWAC game next year, I'm pretty sure that is the case, SU wouldn't be giving up a home game. Both school's would come together to decide where they would play and under what terms. If they decide there is a true home team, so be it. IF they decide they are going to split everything for the 3 years, so be it. I can''t see SU going into a deal with JSU to play it in Jackson until it rolls back into the SWAC game rotation. That wouldn't be smart on SU's behalf at all. So, don't count on it.

As for the Classic or playing in other cities, sounds like you all have been burnt playing in Classics. SU makes money on their classics, bottom line.

PEACE!!!

JSU rolls off SU's SWAC rotation in 2003

SU Notebook (the Advocate November 4, 2001)
(An excerpt from the article which interviewed Kerr, A.D.)

....Kerr said Southern's two-year contract with Division 1-A Tulane shifts the perspective on scheduling. The two-year contract ends next season, but there is a possibility of more games.

He also said Southern is trying to build its home games to five or six at Mumford. This season, Southern plays four home games there. Next season, the Jaguars will play at least three in the Ssuperdome (Tulane, Jackson and Grambling).

The Northwestern State series, started in 1993, ends next season. AND JACKSON STATE, AN EASTERN DIVISION TEAM AND TRMENDOUS RIVAL AND DRAW, WILL ROLL OFF sOUTHERN'S SWAC'S ROTATION IN 2003.

Also "McNeese State is going to roll on somewhere in the near future," Kerr said. "There's a commitment to play them."

What classics does SU play other than the Bayou Classic, which has NO promoter, so Gram and SU gets everything??? If a game successfully exists now, why get a promoter to make a classic out of it??? The schools can do that themselves if they think that a classic tag would make a few more dollars. Until this year, JSU-SU always had 50,000 fans, at least. @ $15-20 a ticket, that's some serious loot for JSU. All to JSU, before expenses. What promoter is gonna guarantee that kind of jack??? Why would JSU give that up???

I didn't say anything about making the SU/JSU game a classic. That term was somehow assumed that is what I was saying. There is more than one way to have a game hosted in a remote site. A school can simply move their home game to another location; you can go into an agreement with a promoter to allow them to promote the game in a remote site; you can find an underwriter (company, alumni, whoever) to simply cover all or some of the expenses of moving the game to a remote site; etc... My point is no matter which SU enters into, we get our money and the practice has been to get it in advance thereby eliminating any risk of us not profiting more than we would have by playing our game at home. Since some of you are associating moving a game to a remote site to putting your game in the hands of a promoter, then you should make sure they get you your money in advance, thereby putting the pressure on the promoter to earn his payoff. If a company underwrites the expenses for you then, they they should either send you the money in advance so you can pay for them as they become due or the billing should be setup to go directly to who's in charge of the underwriting for the event at the company.

The game is not a home game for either SU or JSU for 2 or 3 years, since it want be a SWAC game. I think both schools agree it is good to keep the serious going in spite of its lack of significants to the SWAC title. With that being said, they can either continue the home and home which is what should happen if they can't come to a common ground on a method to maximize the profits from this battle; or decide where they can play the game under a common agreement that makes dollars for both. Example, in 1984, SU played TnSU in Nashville for their home game. In 1985, SU played them in Detroit for the Coleman A Young Classic. IN 1986, SU played them in Memphis. For 3 years, SU's enrollment jump significantly from those areas as a result of that commitment. I'm pretty sure we made some good money at least in 1985. So, there is benefit in moving it around when you have a good game (as we do for 2 or 3 years with JSU and SU). I say if it 2 or 3 years that 1 of those years should be in Jackson and the others somewhere else that would benefit both schools recruiting under profitable arrangements.

Depending on the arrangements, we should also be able to enter into some type of TV contract for these years. Heck, if ESPN or Fox SW will broadcast the game, even if they will do it only for a day game, heck we should be with it. But, that should be pursued after determing what we are going to do with the game and where it is going to be played each year, with or without promoters.

PEACE!!!

Jackson State needs Southern on it's schedule more than Southern needs Jackson State on it's schedule?
