My concern is more with basketball since basketball isn't limited to a subdivision.

What if Davis takes Texas Southern to the sweet 16? The equivalent cant happen in football, and yet football coaches are paid similar salaries with our basketball coaches.

It's because football brings in more ticket/merchandise money at most of our schools. Not sure about TxSU but definitely at SU, GSU, PV, Alcorn, JSU, etc.

None of our teams have come close to getting to the Sweet 16 since 1993 (24 whole seasons). To be real the money needs to go into recruiting and basketball facilities more than coach salaries.

No doubt about facilities & recruiting, but players flock to coaches they respect. Facility improvement & recruiting budget increases would definitely help. The arenas are on par with other midmajors, just need more amenities (better locker rooms, meeting/training rooms, players lounges, etc)

The "name" of a coach only matters when that coach's name is Calipari, Coach K, Roy Williams, Izzo, Boeheim, Pitino, and probably Smart and Self. Division/conference, school name and facilities matters more to the kids who aren't being recruited by those 7-10 big name coaches.

Most players at Creighton, Wichita State, Cincinnati, Tulsa, Dayton, even Gonzaga, etc likely didn't know who the school's coach was before they were initially approached as high school juniors and seniors, but they new the school names based on seeing them in the tourney. Probably visited their facilities and loved the presentation.

You need GOOD coaches, not necessarily NAME coaches. There are only a few "names" out there anyway.

Thats not necessarily true. Those are big names in fan circles. Plenty of quality coaches have respect from players and the overall basketball community that aren't considered "names" by fans.

A good example is Steve Forbes at ETSU. He was an assistant at TAMU and Tennessee before having two straight 30 win seasons in JUCO. Witchita State hired him as an assistant, then he took over as HC at ETSU, then took ETSU to the NCAA tournament in his 2nd year.

Kermit Davis at MTSU is another well respected coach in the basketball community. Kevin Keatts from UNC-Wilmington as well.

OK. Go to an elite AAU tournament with any of those guys you named and ask 10 players who he is. I bet at most 1 of them know.

I guarantee you their AAU coaches know them...and the AAU coaches have a heavy influence on who they sign with. The Creightons and Gonzagas of the world didn't build their programs off coaches who didn't have access to quality players.

A coach can have all the facilities and budget he needs, but if the overall basketball community doesn't know or trust him, he'd better be able to coach up subpar talent. Very few are able to do that.

In the SWACs case, we likely aren't signing HS recruits that have multiple mid or high major offers, so our best bet is embracing the role of building programs off transfers (i.e., the Texas Southern model), and getting better HS signees as the programs increase in visibility and national notoriety

Their AAU coaches aren't who we're talking about. Heck AAU coaches know a lot of HBCU coaches and assistants but their kids never play for most of those guys.
 
Sad part is it's hbcu grads who push the players elsewhere or it's the hbcu parents who get caught up in the hoopla when a P5 calls.

It cringes me to see hbcu alums happy their kid is being recruited by a big school and they go ghost when you ask them to consider their own as who else offered them an opportunity when they were coming out? Or better yet, what tie you ever had to that school?

Will it change? Not much unfortunately but there are ways to change the delivery no one has seem to figure out.
 
I get exactly what @jag4life is saying. From a recruiting standpoint, these kids don't know the coaches from most programs outside of those big names. They just know the success the school has been having.

The coaches you named @2kool Definitely have respect from players and coaches. However, your average player wouldn't know Kermit Davis, Greg Marshall, Steve Forbes, etc.. Although they are some pretty good coaches.
