Boy, it doesn't take us long to give up on a kid these days does it? One strike and your off to prison.
I agree!!!!!

I'm sure there are a helluva lot more bad arse 3rd graders doing things just as bad and worse.

I hope the answer aint simply expelling all bad kids.

sheesh!

Let's revisit the situation:

This child KICKED and PUNCHED the teacher. He didn't just sit there and whine about not wanting to work. He didn't simply yell and say that he wasn't going to do it. He didn't even stop at just cursing her out.

If I were to walk up to a random person on the street and kick and punch them without provocation, I could catch a case. We need to stop coddling these children and reinforce the values that were instilled in us growing up. We all know good and well that had this incident happened 15 or even 10 years ago there wouldn't even be any debate as to whether or not the child would be kicked out of school. Nowadays, everyone wants to place the blame elsewhere and we have become more reactive than proactive. Things will never improve until we stop being political and start being real.

I agree that suing the parent is excessive, but an expulsion should still take place.

Yeah, cause you're a grown man!

And believe me, I'm not saying the kid doesn't need punishment. But when you start talking expulsion, at the age of 10, then I don't necessarily agree.

Heck, even adult criminals are given second and third chances.

But yall wanna throw away a 10 year old kid (and whatever his actions may be, that's exactly what he is, a 10 year old kid

Assaulting a teacher is grounds for expulsion in just about every school district in the country.

If this happened, and was provoked by nothing more than what she said occurred, and this can be backed up by credible witnesses, the district can LEGALLY EXPEL HIS ASS!

I believe that is the case in these parts as well.

Expulsion is not throwing away the kid entirely. Plenty of people have initially been kicked out of public schools or otherwise ended up in continuation or alternative schools and actually came out fine in the end. I guess some people just choose to be lenient, but I don't. Expulsion does not mean that the child will not be able to attend school again, they will just have to go elsewhere.

Teachers are here to TEACH and help pupils learn. It's ashame that teachers have to come in onthe first day stating their defense grounds as opposed to just saying WELCOME and LET'S LEARN! :smh:

If that teacher would have hit the child back, then she could put her whole career on the line, all of that schooling, certifications, workshops, etc..,.Now, that's not appropiate considering the teacher is the adult in that situation who was struck first. Somebody, needs to make an example out of that kid and expel his arse before another kid try tje same thing !

And send him where? Are there alternative schools for 3rd graders?

And if the teacher had put one hand on this kid AFTER he cursed and hit her ................ SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN LEAD OUT OF THAT SAME SCHOOL IN HANDCUFF'S.

Her face would have been all over the evening newscasts as the "CHILD ABUSING TEACHER", and it would have been used as another excuse to put the blame on the teacher instead of some of these no respect having jackarse kid's that have been raised to think they can get away with anything.

Cuttin up in class is one thing -- all kid's do this at one point --, BUT when a kid curses out the teacher and feel's comfortable enough to hit or kick the teacher then it's message time. And since she "couldn't" hit his bad arse back, maybe this will get his parents on his 2 year left behind arse.:(

Being that I pay a hell of a lot of money in school taxes, if the district kicked my kid out of school and didn't have an alternative school to put him in (I'm sure there are not many 3rd grade alternative schools), then they would have to pay for my kid to go to school.

School is a RIGHT, not a priviledge. Now, with this being probably the childs first offense of assaulting a teacher, then a 3 day suspension fits the crime. The suspension is not for the kid, it is more for the parent. The kid is not affected as much, but the parent is losing money each day he is at home with the kid. Now hopefully this will encourage the parent to correct this behavior.

The case I have stated before where a high school student in the Lancaster Texas school district brought a weapon (hunting gun) to school, he only got suspended. Why, because he had parents and friends to plead to the school board to not expell the student. This kid was white. I don't know why we are so quick to say, **** him, send him to juvi, he don't have no parents, he will only end up in prison anyway, expell him, give him nothing to do. I don't know why we think like this, it's sad.

There is one in Cedar Hill.

Hell, if a kid did that to me, I wouldn't give a dayum if they sent his arse to the classroom next door, but I can GUARANDAYUMTEE his little ass couldn't even deliver a message to Michael in MY classroom!

The parent probably ain't gonna lose a dime considering ole boy may stay at home alone anyway...then again the mama may not work. If the parents would keep their children from in front of the TV watching BET, HBO, Showtime, and listening to any and every thing on the radio, he'd probably be a better child. He probably knows Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz better than he knows his time tables....that's probably evident considering he's behind a grade or two.

If he gets 3 days for punching, kicking, and cursing a TEACHER, what should he get when he does the same to somebody else's child?

(

What if the teacher would have gotten cursed out in the club by some young guy, would she be so incline to put her hands on him? NO!! But I guess its OK to put her hand on a child since he's not suppose to act like that anyway.

The point is a kid will be a kid, and guess what? It could be YOUR kid. As sweet as all our kids are, you NEVER know what your child may do during the course of the day.

I'm not defending the child, but I don't think expelling him serves any purpose. It ain't like he gonna say, I wish I hadn't hit that teacher when I was in the 3rd grade once he turns 21. He won't remember it.

Secondly, then you will have a 11 year old kid in the 3rd grade the following year. Now, you think you want your 3rd grader in the same grade as a 11 year old? Talking about being a bully.

To be honest, most parents don't stay home with their kids when they are suspended(which is how I was able to watch game shows and play Nintendo when I would get suspended for fighting).

If the rule on the books states that assaulting a teacher results in expulsion, the district does not have any obligation to the parent after that point. Now if a parent wishes to sue the district that is another issue. In DeKalb County, GA there are a lot of kids that are in private schools simply because they got kicked out of the public school system(it actually takes a lot to get kicked out of DeKalb Schools in some cases, but incidents like assault, weapons violations, and things of that nature are automatic expulsions). I don't remember the handbook by heart, but even nonviolent offenses such as forgery are automatic expulsions in DeKalb.

So, basically what you're saying is that a kid who assaults me should not be expelled, because he is just a kid.

Is that what you're getting at?

That's funny

but also think about how a lot of folks have acted out, "been bad", or whatever at some point as a kid. Aren't we glad that we didn't get thrown away?

When you acted out or were bad, did that entail cursing, kicking, or punching a teacher?

Sperm, seriously, would you feel differently had this been your wife being ASSAULTED by this 10 year old 3rd grader?

Vinita,
I'm not saying that. I'm saying that it may very well depend on the situation. Now, if it was a full out assault, then yes. If it was a little hit, then no. You of all people know that an attack on a teacher does not always mean an attack on a teacher.

Remember there is always a WHY to every situation. I don't think the WHY is accurately printed in this article. I would be the teacher that asked him to go to the director didn't just ask him to go to the director in a simple manner. L she is not even a teacher.

Of course I would feel differently, she is my wife. At the same time I know I have 3 kids in school and at any time of the day, they could hit a teacher too. Its not because they are not taught right from wrong, its because they are KIDS. Now, should they make that mistake, I would want mercy for me and my child to correct the situation before he/she is kicked out of school, wouldn't you?

Or does every parent on this board feel that their child is not capable of this type of behavior?

She was in a position of authority in that classroom, and as such, that fugger didn't have any business putting his dayum hands OR feet on her! Skin on skin contact is ASSAULT, whether it is a slap or a punch, OR A KICK, if the intent was malevolent.

kellis,
Of course not.

But things were VERY different then.
but I would venture to say if somebody was crazy enough to hit a teacher, he wouldn't have gotten expelled. (esp. a 3rd grader)
Just a good whoopin (home and school) and a few days suspension.

I was actually one incident away from being kicked out of my school at one point in junior high. I wouldn't have been kicked out of the district as a whole, but since I was at that school on a permit for the Gifted and Talented program(which actually saved me from getting kicked out long before that)I would have just been sent to the closest school to my home.

I still don't buy this "just a kid" philosophy because even when I was getting in fights back then I knew it was wrong . You know one of the things that set me straight? After yet another fight and another suspension, my mother was giving me the business about what is my problem, what was I thinking, etc. I started making excuses and told her that in the heat of the moment you don't have time to think about that stuff. She looked me dead in my eye and said, "Okay then. The next time you think about fighting, think about fighting me when you get home". I didn't get in another fight the rest of the year.

Sometimes all it takes is a wake-up call to turn a child's life around.
