Tavis Smiley's "We Count! Black Agenda in America" Summit...CSPAN link

I think Smiley summed the whole thing up when he kept asking "what have we been asked to do after Obama was elected". And the conclusion is that none of it makes any sense.

If we have the agenda...and its been here long before Obama became president as Tavis made sure to point out...then why do we now need Obama to tell us how to carry out the agenda? It looks like we're saying we ain't gone do nothin until somebody tells us what to do. As the first lady panelist put it (I only listened and didn't catch her name) "we fell down on our own agenda".

Second why in the world do we do this stuff on TV? Now what do you think the GOP is going to do if Obama does take action on one of the agenda points. Glen Beck has already told his followers that Obama is racist and only cares about blacks. Boss Limbaugh will take the lead on it and use this nice and well published and publicized black agenda against us. This is like handing your enemy the battle plans. When we learn to stop loving the camera and start conducting business as the other groups in this country do then we will get somewhere. Grandstanding on TV trying to shame someone (and this has been going on WELL before Obama) is not going to get us anywhere. When we start learning to seize business opportunities and then use those businesses to funnel money back into our communities we'll get somewhere. If you ain't talkin about that then you ain't talkin.
I really don't think we need to be worried or conserned with racist white america think nor do we need to be concerned about what sgt rush or sean hann. Or glenn "crybaby" beck will say...they saying stuff already....they been saying stuff...

Where would we be if black ..."the real black" back in the 50s and 60s were worried about what would the white think about MLK OR MALCOM X......
I am glad its on tv...people need to wake up....and if white america want to go to war because we want the world to know we need. Repair amd we expect a "black" president to do more than what any of the 43 presidents before him ever did for us ....(when all 43 of the presidents before obama did for the white man)...if they want to take offense or go to war.... I say this is a long overdue war this country been needed....and I also say let's go to war then....

Ain't nobody on that panel made threats to the white race nor did they ask obama to forget about the white race....they simply saying.....give us MORE attention than these other presidents ever gave our race.....I hope they run this again on TV...

QUOTE=SUtrp96;1660422]Man carry your ass with that...

Your ass never post nothing worth reading no way....if it ain't off of msnbc or youtube I highly doubt your knowledge about anything since you wanna go there...

Judging and comprehending from all those folk on that panel....I know they would have bigger issue with the likes of you even more than I do....lol

Did you read that? Did you comprehend that?...
Now break ground and stay in your lane "brotha"....
You are aprt of a big problem our race have....you act like a child when adults pose different views from you and wanna get upset ....but you the same old tired negro that will get upset for a grown man
telling a black kid to pull his pants up....don't disrepect your elders...and you know I know what I'm talking about because you see nothing wrong with a certain high school kid on here cussing and saying off the wall shyt to adults on here...so I know your kind...maybe you one of those that like keeping them kids company...

Stop trying sneak shyt in and speak your point of view like a man and be done..instead of trying take wise cracks "brotha"....play that weak shyt with that high school kid that's on here that is full of play.... I got no play in me to be playing with you...

Its obvious me and you are from two totally different cuts.... funny thing is the way you think I believe I had it much rougher than your kind and I camme up in the late 70s and 80s...I don't know too many negroes like you man...and I am glad...
I told you before..hold a discussion with me respectfully or just keep your bs to yourself... I give you that same space ...
Respect my mind brah...

You old ...act like it.[/QUOTE]

SUtrp62% I could care less about what your thoughts are (small as they may be), last I checked I was grown and the only one who's being childish is you as usual by attacking anybody that don't agree with your point of view.

You rant and rave about everything under the sun and then when you're put in a position to come up with something other then a 15 sec sound bite, you start acting like a jackass thug or trying to bring others in your dumb isht like an immature child.

Here's a bit of advice, let's see if you got enough understanding to comprehend it. The next time you want to whine about somebody being in your lane or whatever other dumb isht you come up with, make sure your not the one getting in the fast lane slowing traffic down.

Go to war? LMAOOOO. We kill each other by the hour, and you talking about a race war?

We will always be our own worst enemy. So when 2012 comes around and Obama doesn't get re-elected..I wonder what the agenda will be.

Power starts at the bottom..its maintained at the top. (how doyou think after 43 presidents, we live in a time where Obama could even be President?)

Werent you just saying we shouldn't be dependent on people and taking handouts in other threads? Why should we be dependent on the president to spark a movement. Start the movement and force him to comply. You mention Malcom and MLK, but Malcom and MLK..were not the president...so where are the people spearheading the movement like they were?

They are doing panels, interviewings, then going home and doing nothing until the next opportunity to run thier mouth.

You also mention the Gays and Illegals? Those folks weren't doing panels..they were out there DOING. We aren't on one accord to even say we really have an agenda. Say Obama..puts more effort into helping HBCUs....it will still a be a ton of other black folks getting angry. We as a people are that messed up.

if this was a porn movie this post would be a money shot; action/money talks everything else runs a marathon; people jumping on obama but wont go to a town meeting, wont vote local elections, hell some dont even go to pta meeting when talkin about their bad ass kids. I thought the panel was great but again jesse said people didnt have panels back in the day they showed up and did it. they knew they would go to jail or lose their life but they did it. This summer im making it my plan to get more involved in the mentorship programs of young boys in northern ms and research more in south la where i spend time too. I already talk to the teens in my church about drugs, peer pressure, education, dating, relationships. So let make sure we are doing our job in our communities instead of waiting on some big leader to lead us there

Sometimes, you have to take care of home before you can make demands from someone else. Your claims will hold no validity if you are not handling business. The problem is that there are far to many of us lost than those of us who see the problems. Sometimes, I find myself unable to relate to some people I grew up with because our interest are so different at this point. I could try to talk them about education, empowerment, voting all-day but none of that matters to them. The more I watch the actions of society, the less faith I have in it.

Exactly!!! If they REALLY wanted to get some REAL issues in the black community addressed they wouldn't be on T.V. grandstanding. They have enough influence and ability to set up a meeting with Obama and sit down (like serious minded folks do) and talk to him face to face about issues. The man ain't even halfway through one term yet and he has 2 wars, a fugged up economy, healthcare, education, energy, and all kinds of other issues to juggle all at the same time. EVERY RACE IN AMERICA IS SUFFERING!!!

Instead of trying to get in the media spotlight why aren't they out there in the black communities making things happen like the REAL Civil Rights leaders did back in the day. All they ever do is talk.

I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day.......

Bruh i feel 100%. I go back to my hometown and all they talk about is puzzy, rims, weed and repeat. But there are some kids who want to do better and make it out but they just need the motivation. Sometimes we focus so much on the bad ones that we never hear from the kid with all a's or the kid that can play music well or the girl that wants to be student body president. Thats what makes me mad with that poster skyvolt2000. He post article after article on how bad dallas kids are or something negative but never the positive. Just like the all male school with the 100% graduation rate. That didnt make much news and we didnt discuss that here too much but we need to. Im talkin about kids bc to me that is where we seem to lose at. We too busy holding lil wayne and solja boy accountable but we are not turning off the radio and broadening their minds to much more. So THE BLACK AGENDA starts right here in our home. I start with my sisters, my cousins, church members and so forth. I just dont believe in waiting on someone to make an agenda for us when there is so much to be done that we can do.

Taking handouts that keep us dependent on the government is something totally different from asking the government that destroyed our people to repair our communities...meaning equal schools....projects to clean our urban neighborhoods up.....create opportunities so the black man don't feel rap..sports....and drugs is our only or best way to make it in this country....this means changing drug laws making them equal....not a 100 to 1 ratio when it comes to time served for crack vs cocaine.....repairing our hbcus....the shyt folk on here talk about why these pwcs can snatch our poor kids out the ghetto....and why they and they welfare parents turn their noses up at hbcus... make shyt even...equal ...fair

Not no free water...free lights.....free rent for as long as you want...

Don't get the 2 confused next time...

To your last paragraph..if you would read and not glimsp...you would have saw I said just that......

The gays and illegals got up off their asses in the day and age...and putting pressure on Obama..and they getting action....
Although I love the discussion they had..and I did get the energy from that panel that they recognize we need to get off our ass and rally harder then the gays and illegals...
I can't sit here and say I was agreeing with tavis vibe...because I really wasn't..
He asking when are we going to get our "directions".....really ..wtf?!?!...

My last point......you really think blacks won't take to the street when these racist white folk put them hoods back on..IF Obama adhere to that agenda?...I know we killing ourselves...but that's a sleeping giants that white folk don't want to wake....

I've learned that we, as blacks are going to complain regardless of what's going on. If President Obama does what some are claiming he should do, they'll still be thousands more complaining about that, saying he should do something else...or better yet, the same ones complaining about HOW he's doing what they want him to do.

It's a catch 22 situation and he won't please us anyway....I think this summit is a good thing and I'm happy that black folks are actually having dialogues/discussion panels about the issues that affect our race.

I think the dialogue is great also but what ever comes out of these summit's? Tavis goes back to his radio/t.v. gig, Cornell West goes back to teaching at Princeton (yeah black power over there...), and the rest go back to the regularly scheduled program. The only one who practices what he preaches is Farrakahan. What ever happened to there folks being visible in these communities they are saying should have an agenda? Back in the 60's you could stand next to Dr. King, you could walk with Malcolm X, you could sit down with Jesse Jackson and have a convo, but most of all you could see as well as hear these folks doing the work......Our black children don't know who ANY of our current black so called leaders are.

Equal schools? So we can have everything we need in a class room but still the students decide not to come to class or pay attention when they do?

Clean up our hoods? When the people who live in those hoods have no problem destroying the very place they stay?

The government can help as much as they want in some of these situations but if the people involved don't change then the problem still exists.

A bandaid may stop the bleeding but if the cut is infected it doesn't matter.

And to your last point, hell naw blacks aint gonna take the streets. During the Civil Rights movements it was a ton of blacks looking at the people in the movement like they were stupid? During slavery it was people who would never betray master? Those people will still exisit.

Man Psychojag and 8to5 i sure hope yall are involved in some type of teaching and or mentoring bc yall are telling the truth in here. Its good to see black men like with such intelligence.

And ms warndalyn, like 8to5 mentioned somehow we are have become a nation of never satisfied. People will always complain about something. Remember Harriet Tubman had to put a gun to people's head to get them to freedome bc some just rather stay idle in slavery. The difference bwtween now and then is that the shackle has moved from the leg to the brain. Again I encourage all of our people on here to go out and learn more about our city mayors, city council, elected offficers to make that they are doing their jobs in out communities. This discussion has inspired me to do the same and hopefully inspired more that are reading these boards as well.

I agree with tha...I can only imagine how a lot of these kids would change if they "knew" these "black leaders" cared about them....I think that's why most of our parents generation were inspired because like you say a lot of them were shoulder to shoulder with these leaders back then....
These kids no are shoulder to shoulder with pimps and drug dealers....if we get that image off the streets that would be a big step in the right direction....

I will say this on the equal school situation... from working with kids here in new orleans....

We now have charter schools in new orleans and schools still left under the NOPS system....my former school is now a charter school ran by our alumni....our charter have over 30 million dollars in alumni and friends donation....from people from new york..canada..you name it... thing is my school used to be an all white boy school back in the leave it to beaver days...sandra bullock herself gets many people to donate to my school...she her self donated over 2 million..
Saying that to say....these parents who kids attend our school are very attentive...why people they are getting the best possible education..landscaping is done on the regular now that charter runs it...our school will be the first charter high school in lousisana with a medical school.....and seperate theather and arts building......

The parents are more involved when they know they kids have no excuse to not succeed....

Take that versus these same kids next door neighbors that attend john mac..etc...orleans public school run it and you see the attitude difference...you see the drop out difference... you see the difference in kids attending college....

If each school in new orleans was able to get the same funding I know it would be a huge change in new orleans...(murder rate..drop out rate.....blacks in jail rate the whole 9)

I went to schools here in new orleans where it was too damn hot to stay attentive in class because no air conditions in the school....because books were missing pages...because it was enough books.....

But I'm no fool neither..I do know with these thing you must have a strong and wise principle.....

This ain't no pissing contest.....schools in poor condittions do play a key role in these kids success

To the other cat talking who should be mentoring and telling us on this internet site how you going to look into mentoring and helping....
Quit trying slang out brownie points and just do it...its not hard...I assume you marched in the band...find a school any school and show your face and express how you would like to help....

Me and a few other juke do just that...help them with music...then help them if they need help with their lesson and give them guidance....

Some of you would be surprised at how some of these kids in new orleans are living after the hurricane...some stay alone...living from house to house...

Again ...just do it.... it shouldn't be no pissing match over who is helping in their neighborhoods...

I guess that was a money shot too I guess....

Again...just do it...

Making things up as you go and delusional enough to actually think people believe it. Kind of like your 62% income tax deduction that you pulled out of thin air without an ounce of proof, but hey I forget you're the expert on everything from NBA basketball to child birth, hell you should run for office, I'm pretty sure you'll fit right in.

The gays and illegals got up off their asses in the day and age...and putting pressure on Obama..and they getting action....
They have been doing that for years. Long before Obama was thought of. They have now become more vocal and telling thier stories to whoever listens. Same with illegals.

Our black children don't know who ANY of our current black so called leaders are.
Because most of them are too busy getting in trouble with the law.
Also how many of them live in the black community?
Or even showup OUTSIDE of election time?

You are right. We don't need to be worried about what they think. Thats not the problem. Tavis and crew are directly trying to get the government/Obama to do something for black people and THAT cannot be done without the support of the rest of America. And thats where Limbaugh and Beck can shut this stuff down before it ever gets started.

So either way...whether we are going to shut up and get it done on our own or we are going to tell the government to do something grandstanding on TV is not the way to do it. Its entirely counterproductive.

MLK was on TV marching because we didn't have any foundation to do much on our own. We needed public sympathy to get the law off our backs. Well now the law is off and we can conduct business. There is no point in being on TV anymore. People have talked about this very problem before. A plan was never set for how to move forward after the civil rights era. People are still trying to use the same tactics for a totally different problem. Some do it because they don't know any better and some because its a source of power. Either way it is backfiring on us left and right.

And on top of that just how many folk that need to wake up do you think watch CSPAN?

That's true....but most of the panel did say what you are saying....you can tell a lot of them is ready to see us get off our asses and do something....I think the main one with all the "what are our directions" bs is tavis.....

I really don't like Tavis type.....I already know what kind of person he is...he want everything to go through him....he want directions from government then he want to then give us our orders.....
It was a many of times the panel suggested we can't trust either party to have our best interest at heart..its mainly tavis was on the "black caucus" and shyt like that....
He seem to be one of those book smart dudes with no street sense....he really don't seem like he will be willing to hit the streets....
And I think they should re air it on bet

I still ain't made it through even half of it but I could tell it Tavis would probably be the main if not only one pushin that shat. I don't care for him either. He ran off the Tom Joyner mornin show in batch fashion to me when folk got on him about Obama. Then he comes back and picks up DIRECTLY where he left off. He gave a speech almost like he didn't want any questions to be asked by Tom and didn't tell him what he was going to say either. He just looked shady and like he was on a mission from the get go.

He seems to want to be the next generation of black leader when we don't need one. And I think he sees Obama as a threat to that throne when nobody even looks at Obama as a black leader.

Like it was asked earlier how many folks would even watch it on BET.
The ones you want to see it are not going to watch or let their kids watch.

You would have better luck taking it to city to city and presenting it at venues-you know folks will be around.
