The CIAA's quality of play isn't that much better. The thing is that they have developed the tournament into an event. They've made it the place to be. Surely you don't think that everybody there just for the love of the game. They are there because it caters to each fan's liking. Some folks wanna see a step show or a band battle or a concert. That in turn makes the stars come out. Once the stars come out then you have the folks that may buy a ticket because Diddy is gonna be there. That's called effective MARKETING. Another thing is how many times do we survey the fans to see what they want? The CIAA does that yearly.

I don't think I know one person who has gone to Charlotte for the CIAA who has actually gone to the games. :lecture: I actually thought about going this year but going to the games didn't cross my mind. Between the students and the old alums who buy the weekly passes, there may not be many walk up tickets to get anyway.

Didn't you just say that there were TRADITIONAL games in football that will always have large crowds or something to that effect?

Well those traditional games (and there are quite a few) more then make up for any games that may be below SWAC standards? Always have......always will.

So whether anybody buys it or not those are the facts. Like I said...it ain't rocket science.

The CIAA tournament, MCC, BC are traditional events that don't have any trouble selling tickets and drawing huge crowds. The SWAC bball tournament is an entirely different animal.

We are missing the 18-35 demographic. I have a friend who is 45....went to the CIAA this year for the first time and says he ain't missing another one.. :lol:

But turn their noses up at the prospect of paying $20 for a single game ticket to a SWAC Tournament basketball game. Just say you are not as passionate about the basketball experience as you are about the football experience.

It is not Sharp's fault. The way you draw interest in the SWAC Tournament is for individual schools to build interest in their own programs long before March. That means marketing the coaches and the players. It also means investing in solid basketball coaches so they can recruit quality players which would make the programs more competitive. That is how you get butts in the seats.

If individual schools don't put forth the effort in investing in the basketball product, how you do expect the SWAC Tournament with Katt Williams and Steve Harvey old butt will help make up for that?

Kendrick, I'm a ASU season ticket holder, I attend Magic City Classic and Turkey Day, I'm spent out by the time basketball season even rolls around, I'm saving now for next year....:lol:, I get what your saying, but its tough......

$30 is high for SWAC basketball, right? So what you are saying the price of the tickets should reflect the quality of the product. Like I said, there are tournaments that ask for $40 and $50 per tournament game. I'm not sure, but the I have read where the CIAA charges like $100 for tickets and they are Division II.

If they are student tix and nosebleed tix, I can see it. They are not hurting for attendance. The reason I thought it was for the week is that I KNOW that a long time ago, you could not buy single session tickets to the CIAA's. You had to buy a book for the whole week. Things may have changed.

Duer Sharp seems to have commitment issues.. Come on, after 1 year you ready to move... Shreveport is Perfect for people who want to see these games.. Everyone watched the Games, headed to the Board walk or the Casinos for the rest of the Night.. you cant beat it... im guess he lost to much in Diamond jack, or ran the Build up thinking it would be taking care of..
Drop them prices to $10 and $20 in you might get a 1,000 more fans in the house.. Dont expect more then that..
Hosting this tournament in Houston and Dallas is digging the Grave... Its too many other things to do..
Shreveport works because of distance from each school..
Biloxi to Fare, Bham, too Far and no entertainment, jackson perfect location but the city is Flaky..
We need to go back to shreveport

Maybe the high attendance in football is due to the better talent that is found in football versus basketball.

If you put some of the SWAC footabll teams versus some o the lower level PWC teams-they can beat them or keep up with them on the field.

Maybe they aren't interested in teh SWAC tourney be ause of the local high schools provide better entertainment. Especailly if you are in a basketball hotbed and those teasm are fighting for state titles.

I'm not defending anyone. Now the contract thing is bad. Really bad. But that has nothing to do with how the average SWAC fan views the basketball product. That is on the individual schools. They have to make overall improvements to the product for it to grow and eventually garner enough interest so that the conference won't have to rely on step shows, battle of the bands and comedy acts to get people to come when tournament time rolls around.

Or it could just be like, Bluedog said we (fans/alums) just don't make basketball a priority like we do football no matter where the tournament is moved.

SWAC basketball is simply horrible. No one is going to go to any extent to see a SWAC basketball game. Sharp should bring all schools together and develop a comprehensive plan to improve the product and stop thinking people are going show up just because. Hell, there is better high school basketball being played. As a conference, the SWAC lost every out of conference game.

Fans may purchase all-tournament passes for $75, which are good for all men’s and women’s games to be held March 9-13 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy. To purchase your passes, please call the UTSA Ticket Office at (210) 458-UTSA (8872).
