The Southwestern Athletic Conference is opting out of its contract with Shreveport-Bossier-City to play its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments at the CenturyTel Center.

“We’re going to opt out and start a bidding process,†SWAC commissioner Duer Sharp said Saturday evening. “To be fair to the conference, I have to put it out to bid.â€
Sharp said he started leaning toward this decision Wednesday and added it wasn’t a hard decision to make. Sharp will complete the request for proposal Monday and send it out Tuesday. He said the bidding process will most likely last around 60 days. Shreveport-Bossier City can summit another bid if it wants.

Sharp thought the original agreement was one year with a two-year option. He said he discovered Wednesday it’s only one year.


“There’s no option,’’ Sharp said. “There was only a one-year deal. If anything, that was my fault. I’m just glad we caught it.’’

Sharp said there was not a particular incident that led to this decision.

However, he wasn’t happy with hotel rates received in the two cities or sponsorship dollars. ...

Shreveport-Bossier City's shot at a long run as the SWAC Tournament host clanged off the rim.

What many expected to be a three-year run ended at the CenturyTel Center suddenly Saturday when SWAC commissioner Duer Sharp said he was opening the bidding process for the 2011 tournament.

Yes, the SWAC had a one-year deal with a two-year option here — although even that is up for debate according to SWAC commissioner Duer Sharp. He claims a one-year deal while local officials say there was always an option.
But the SWAC surprisingly still opted out.
How surprising was it?

The conference already had a date for next year's tournament. There were also promotional items with Bossier City as the location for the 2011 tournament being circulated around the building during the week.
Does that sound like the SWAC was planning a getaway?

No, the SWAC had every intention of playing its tournament here next year.
At least until Wednesday. ...

How do you opt out of a contract that you later state has no option?

How is it that you signed an agreement that you THOUGHT was a one year deal with a two year option, but didn't realize until Wednesday that the deal was for only one year?

All the hotels in jackson came together this past fall and gave a discount to anyone comming into the city to stay for a JSU football game.

The real problem is OUR Presidents/Chancellors and their control tactics of the SWAC Office. Not to mention their hiring practices. It seems to me they want a Commish they can control. After that whole Rudy fiasco. They have wanted the control. Sometimes I wonder about some of our people. We can be our own worse enemies. We manage things just like our athletes manage their money when they make it the NFL and NBA. Have nothing to show for it in the long run. Damn shame.:shame:

They need to drop them got dayum prices...I went when the money let me go...I was intending to take the chirren with me, but when I checked them prices, I said he11 no..a family of 4 paying $20.00 pp is not gonna work, no matter where the tourney is held, then the championship game was $30.00 pp, the country is in a resession and paying that kinda money in today's economy just not working.....I now see why the arena in B'ham didn't have a sellout, nowhere will it sell out...so take it to Houston, Dallas, BR, or Jackson at those prices its not goin to work....cause imma make sure the electricty, gas, water, telephone, and food is at my house first and then the pleasure can come later...

The SWAC, just like other conferences are looking to make money off the conference tournament. I mean, you have other conferences charging $40 and up for games. I read a story where folks in the SEC were paying $55 for face value tournament tickets.

I don't know what other schools charge for football games, but in 2009 JSU charged $25 for GA tickets when bought the day of the game. So $20 bucks is not that much for a championship event.

Again, when you complain about ticket prices, it reflects how one feels about the product on the floor.

With all due respect I don't think $20 is not a lot of money for a college basketball ticket, considering you are talking about a postseason tournament. The SWAC, just like other conferences are looking to make money off the conference tournament. I mean, you have other conferences charging $40 and up for games. I read a story where folks in the SEC were paying $55 for face value tournament tickets.

I don't know what other schools charge for football games, but in 2009 JSU charged $25 for GA tickets when bought the day of the game. So $20 bucks is not that much for a championship event.

Again, when you complain about ticket prices, it reflects how one feels about the product on the floor.

Why? Don't the folks who follow the SWAC want the conference to be one of the best in the country? I could understand if these games were being played at a campus venue. However, these games are played in a rented venue so if you are a SWAC suit, you would want the league to get some return for that investment.

That is why $20 in my opinion is not a lot of money to pay for ticket to a conference tournament, considering you have conferences like the A10 charging $15-20 just for those who qualify for student tickets. Does the level of play justify $20 tickets, that's up to the fans and alums to decide.

What was wrong with the attendance. Do you guys ever watch some of the conferences on our level. They don't fare any better in their tournament attendance.

The final game looked great. Logos, Nike stuff strolling at the scores table and some fans. Outside of the big conference what do you expect from these tournaments. 10,000 LOL. Not with out history of the regular season champ not making it to the final game.

And Duer is a plum idiot...SMH

I don't think $20 is too much but I do think $30 is too much.

...and as for the tourney, I prefer Houston but Shreveport could work if marketed properly.

Well where would play it in Dallas? I don't think Fair Park has a place for basketball and you can forget Mark Cuban World-Mavericks, Stars and Big 12 have that on lockdown.

The Death Star in Arlington could do it but I wonder how many folks would go. If you go the wrong way heading towards it-you will be lost for hours because they are still building the rest of the new freeway to get to it.

If they somehow do manage to play it in Dallas, I would hope they add a college fair to the event. There are too many basketball players (not just in DISD, but Cedar Hill, private schools & others) that are not being recruited and maybe having a SWAC tourney in one of the larger markets might attract some talent to the SWAC. Get them before they head to Junior or community colleges.
