Re: SWAC opts out of basketball tourn...& Scott Ferrell: SWAC tournament a quick turn

With all due respect I don't think $20 is not a lot of money for a college basketball ticket, considering you are talking about a postseason tournament. The SWAC, just like other conferences are looking to make money off the conference tournament. I mean, you have other conferences charging $40 and up for games. I read a story where folks in the SEC were paying $55 for face value tournament tickets.

I don't know what other schools charge for football games, but in 2009 JSU charged $25 for GA tickets when bought the day of the game. So $20 bucks is not that much for a championship event.

Again, when you complain about ticket prices, it reflects how one feels about the product on the floor.

I don't know about u, but my hours were cut so that I could still have a job, (thanks to Bobby Jindal) so with that being said, taking a family of 5 to the finals would have cost $100.00 + concessions, each night and then for the final game $150.00 + concessions, even if we would have bought a pass for all the games that is $500.00 plus concessions, with my pay being cut that would have hurt my household a lot.

You cannot compare SWAC to SEC.

Thank u, I know I don't have the money that the fans to the SEC have, wish I did.

I don't think $20 is too much but I do think $30 is too much.

...and as for the tourney, I prefer Houston but Shreveport could work if marketed properly.

TP u don't have kids so u would not understand the position I am in...it worked well from what I could see, Duer Sharp was looking for an instant success after the Tourney had suffered so long in B'ham...:read:

I disagree with that part. At least about the tourney suffering in Bham. All the championship games that I've gone to have had good attendance. Unless Sharp is like some of these posters seem to be and have some unrealistic expectations.

ALL of our attendance "suffers" during the reg season, don't know why/how the tourney attendance is suppose to be 10K a game. Especially when the schools don't seem to support the tourney anyway.

I was glad to see ASU send the cheerleaders and pep band to Shreveport for the duration of the tournament.

Re: SWAC opts out of basketball tourn...& Scott Ferrell: SWAC tournament a quick turn

Folks ain't going to a game because of a college fair, step show, etc...

the quality of play has to improve for the casual fan but this tourney has the potential as you saw how a drive-up crowd can work on championship Saturday....if you wanted to go home early and lived close by, the tourney offered the option also

But we're not the only tourney to suffer....everywhere else had empty seats....one tourney had 179 people at the title game

Well, don't go to the games then if you can't afford it. I mean, you can't expect most conferences to take in account a family of 4,5 or 6 when determining single game ticket prices at a league tournament that is not on a college campus. Some teams offer family packs or something like that. But the prices are set based on how much they believe the public will pay.

Nobody forces fans to pay for those tickets. Either you want to or you don't. But you can't expect the league lower ticket prices because your family can't afford it. They are in the business of turning a profit as well in this horrible economy also.

To be honest, you don't get gouged on the ticket prices. It is the concession prices and parking fee where the fan gets hosed.

The CIAA's quality of play isn't that much better. The thing is that they have developed the tournament into an event. They've made it the place to be. Surely you don't think that everybody there just for the love of the game. They are there because it caters to each fan's liking. Some folks wanna see a step show or a band battle or a concert. That in turn makes the stars come out. Once the stars come out then you have the folks that may buy a ticket because Diddy is gonna be there. That's called effective MARKETING. Another thing is how many times do we survey the fans to see what they want? The CIAA does that yearly.

I watch the MEAC CG and their attendance didn't appear to be any better than the SWAC actually it might have been smaller in numbers.

I understand that there needs to be an event like atmosphere for folks to show up to a basketball tournament. But why does that mentality exist? I mean, aren't their step shows and battle of band events throughout the year fans go to?

The TGO and I have been telling yall Sharo is an idiot for years. Now yall wanna listen.

Yeah but that's all a part of the HBCU experience. That's what draws us out. The PWC's have different types of events as well but the stepping and the bands is a part of our culture I guess.

The CIAA tourney is bigger than the ACC tourney in terms of economic impact to the city in which it is held. I think the SWAC needs to at least get to the level of the mid majors in D1.

What was the attendance for the championship game anyway?

Those were Sharp words not mind, he was interviewed on TV here and he said he expected a bigger turnout than in previous years....

Excuse u sir, I was there when Gram played on both nights, I hired a babysitter for less than what it would have costed for me future husband and chirren to go....There were no parking fees and concession were kinda high but that is all, as far as ticket prices, glad I am not the only one who has said the price was too dayumn high...when u got deep pockets then price don't matter, 3 months ago, money didn't matter to me, but trust me it matters now.....if I had known ur pockets were deep, I would have asked for a donation so that my chirren could have gone...

Yeah I remember reading that somewhere. That's amazing and a testament that it can be done. The SWAC has no excuse. We should be the premier HBCU conference in every aspect but our leadership lacks vision. If the SWAC Tournament and the SWAC Championship (football) was marketed correctly and in the right city they could be off the charts.

What were the ticket prices? I think it was the big 10 that the commentator said the tickets were $4,200.

I don't think if you can throw down a Andrew Jackson to attend a basketball game does not mean you have deep pockets. Again, leagues can't plan their tickets prices in the event some fans run into financial trouble.

I hear complaints all the time for fans who follow pro sports and are pissed that they can't take Johnny, Sally, Sue and the wife to the Sox, Cubs, Bulls or Bears game because tickets cost $40 per person. I tell them hey, don't go. Watch it on TV. Because those franchises don't care. They know if you can't pay to go to the game, others will.

I was shocked to learn that it cost $60 for a single ticket to watch a Kansas regular season home game. Even more absurd was DePaul, who has one win in the Big East the last two years and plays 15 miles away from campus, charges $35 for floor seats.

In a perfect world, we all would like to see more reasonable prices for things based on our budget. However, we live in a capitalistic country. It all comes down to if you are willing to buy or not buy.

That's crap. If leagues can just set whatever price they want to without ANY concern for overpricing the event, then why stop at $30 or $40, why not $100 a head?

The admission cost is a real concern and would be a deterrent to a lot of people. PLEASE stop acting as if it wouldn't.

$30 for this game is high. Especially if you're trying to grow the event.

Yep.

Re: SWAC opts out of basketball tourn...& Scott Ferrell: SWAC tournament a quick turn

I still want to know who drew 179 to their conference championship game...

How many people did the SWAC draw to the tournament this year? Let's say they drop ticket prices a bit ($15 for regular days, $20 for the final), how big of an attendance increase would there have been? If they dropped ticket prices to $10 a day, would they have sold out the arena for the entire event?

The league needs to figure out how many people they need to draw at each ticket price level to turn a profit on the tournament, and go from there. A full arena at $10 a head would be a lot better than a quarter-full arena at $20 a head. Problem is, how many people can be realistically expected to attend the basketball tournament, at any price?

$30 is high for SWAC basketball, right? So what you are saying the price of the tickets should reflect the quality of the product. Like I said, there are tournaments that ask for $40 and $50 per tournament game. I'm not sure, but the I have read where the CIAA charges like $100 for tickets and they are Division II.

Okay, this is what I found on a Virginia Union web site.

Reduced CIAA Tournament Tickets

VIRGINIA UNION UNIVERSITY
CD KING BUILDING & ATHLETIC OFFICE

$50-Students Tickets for $30!
$100-Upper Level Seats for $50!
$175-Lower Level Seats for $100!
$225-Lower Level Premium Seats for $175!

People stop beating your heads against a wall for an answer that really is simple.

We don't love basketball, we like it, and we like alot, one might even say we like it a whole lot, but we don't love basketball like we love football and until we put a product on the field (court) that makes it worth our while to attend we aren't going to show in numbers except for the semi'final and final games, no matter where its held plain and simple.

Kendrick made a good observation when he said that he didn't think twenty dollars was asking to much for a championship game and comparing what we pay for football games, i.e. Bayou Classic, Magic City Classic etc.

In those situation people still have the same number of family member that want to attend, probably more, but you don't hear a word about those games being to high. Why?

Because we love football, it's our religion and God in the south. Always has been always will be.

What we complain about as poor attendance in football the rest of the FCS would cut off their good arm to have.

In the SWAC basketball most recent hay-days, of Andy Stoglin, Ben Jobe, Bob Moreland, Dave Whitney, Hoby and Strib hell the arena stayed pack and it didn't matter if the games were in Itta Bena or Downtown Houston, because we had a great product.

So until our leaders step up and I use the word leaders loosely, it is what it is and it ain't rocket science.

supply and demand

The CIAA tournament, MCC, BC are traditional events that don't have any trouble selling tickets and drawing huge crowds. The SWAC bball tournament is an entirely different animal.

Re: SWAC opts out of basketball tourn...& Scott Ferrell: SWAC tournament a quick turn

and bluedog,
I don't buy that one about the quality of product on the court/field effecting attendance to a great extent. Because as always, the SWAC leads in attendance in football.... Think about it. :scared:

Re: SWAC opts out of basketball tourn...& Scott Ferrell: SWAC tournament a quick turn

Here are conference tournaments from teams roughly our sizes...the average attendance was 3,000 fans and we had at least that in Century Tel on Saturday....we're at the norm to begin with in a new place so imagine if it grows

GREAT WEST
-----------------------
I meant 139 fans

http://www.greatwestconference.org/...ols/gwfc/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/HBU-USDMBB6

SUN BELT
------------
no attendance listed

ATLANTIC SUN
----------------
3,200

BIG WEST
-------------
3,113

SOUTHLAND
-------------
3,573

Re: SWAC opts out of basketball tourn...& Scott Ferrell: SWAC tournament a quick turn

Man, the Great West Conference makes no sense to me. It's a bunch of teams from all over the country who couldn't get into other conferences making their own league. Just look at their members:

Utah Valley
Chicago State
Houston Baptist
Texas-Pan American
North Dakota
South Dakota
New Jersey Tech

They don't qualify for an NCAA bid at this point either. I'm surprised there was 130 people in Orem, Utah willing to pay money to watch the epic Houston Baptist/South Dakota championship game. :flippy:
