SWAC meetings tackle scheduling for football games

From what I've read, posters don't care if the one coach was Pete or Spears, Dr. Thomas, or Bell or any other coach. The problem is that they got ONE coach to help with the model. That ain't the smartest move when you're dealing with a conference of 10 schools. Where are the A.D.'s in this??? They are the schedule makers.

This league is just BUSH. We need to accept that.

That's not the problem. The problem is that everybody is on here whining and complaining. Pointing fingers and acting childish. To say that most of the people on this board are in their 30's and 40's yall sure do know how to act like children. No matter how many threads we start on here, nothing we say here will affect what is done in the SWAC. If you have a problem with something don't b**ch about it. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. All these threads over the past few weeks have been ridiculous and really show how ignorant a lot of people on here are. But continue as you were cause the ignorant people will bypass this message and continue with the foolishness.

Exactly what can be done about this crap that the conference is doing by posters on a message board. Have you ever emailed the people running this ship??? I have, and they are all for everything that's being done. We don't vote any of these people in/out of office. We can't fire them. About all we can do is voice our opinion via email, and I'm telling you those idiots ain't about to change a thing.

I really wish there were something we could do to make a change. If you have any ideas, I'm all eyes/ears.

Leave Pete arse away from making schedule suggestions. He helped with last one and see where we are at now. Let the A.D.s work on the scheduling.

why is Pete the scheduling expert? Why not form a committe? Why just 1 coach? Why are we so backwards?

This 9-game mandate that everybody on this board claims to hate so much was a product of Pete and Hughes when the time came around that JSU was going to rotate off of SUs schedule. I won't be suprised if the new format is a little more biased to others. Let's just say that.

bluedog,

NONE of those quotes you just posted show that they have a problem with Pete himself, except maybe Mr. SWACs ghost. Fiyah simply said "here's a problem." Well the problem is they went to one coach. band fan questioned why just one coach and not a committee. Mr. SWACs ghost criticized Pete's roll in previous scheduling, but then stated that the A.D.'s should be making the schedule. He later posted about how the 9 game mandate came about. That ain't no Pete hate. Pete just happens to be the coach that they chose. They'd have a hissy fit if it had been Bell or any other coach. You're too defensive. Everybody ain't always out to get ya.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Don't you think that comment is just a little ironic? :lmao:

Point One: Who do you think would know more about the SWAC's rivalries?
(a) TSU's new coach
(b) Willie Totten
(c) James Bell
(d) Melvin Spears
(e) Pete Richardson

Point Two: What schools have been able to put together a profitable schedule to sustain and CONSTANTLY compete in other sports as a result of good football earnings?
(a) Alabama A&M
(B) Prairie View
(C) Alabama State
(D) Southern University
(e) Grambling State
(F) Jackson State

Richardson is simply giving his input of a possible way the conference could schedule games with out-of-conference games in the beginning of the season (Yeah, TSU-PV, this means you) and conference games closer to the end, like almost EVERY OTHER FREAKING CONFERENCE out there, but some SWAC'ers are so concerned with NOT being like this conference or that one, we are truly UNLIKE ANY DAMN CONFERENCE I KNOW.

I agree with the above person. Blow the *itch up and start over with just a group of independents for a year or two who still play each other, but not under conference rules, see who can survive that way and those who can, once you reoorganize with a better conference model and leadership, bring in those who can survive and blaze a trail that may only have six members, but still be something special.

Oh yeah, and revenue sharing .... with some of the Kentucky's (Valley) and Vanderbilt's of this conference ..... :upset: :upset:

Somethign has to happen or the conference will die anyway with some schools half-heartedly participating and others giving their all to achieve higher levels!

This is a dumb question, but I am going to give you a smart answer...

(b) Willie Totten and (d) Melvin Spears because they not only coach SWAC programs, but they also played for them.

*Wondering what the hell this has to do with anything*

GOT THIS OFF OF THE MEAC BOARD

Fresh off the presses...

By Brandon M. Bickerstaff

BILOXI -- As was expected, football scheduling for the upcoming season was at the head of the agenda during the Southwestern Athletic Conference's spring business meetings held at the Beau Rivage Hotel in Biloxi, Miss., on Monday.

Athletic directors and other representatives from each of the SWAC's 10 member institutions were on hand to discuss policies, marketing strategies and the conference's future. But issues concerning the 2004 football schedule stole the show during the first day of meetings that will conclude with an executive vote by the schools' presidents and chancellors on Thursday.

At the top of the list of issues was the cancellation of at least three games between SWAC schools, including two games involving the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Charles McClelland, president of the SWAC's board of athletic directors and athletic director at Prairie View A&M, said that the cancellation of UAPB's home game against Southern was the catalyst for the increased emphasis on the football calendar as schools struggle with the conference's new scheduling rules. UAPB?s Nov. 27 game against Alcorn State was also axed when Alcorn opted to play Howard University in the Prince George?s Classic at FedEx Field on Sept. 18.

According to the policy, which was supposed to be implemented during the 2004 football season, SWAC schools are required to play nine conference games. Seven of those ? the team?s four divisional games and then the games against the top three teams from the other division, based on records from the previous year ? will count towards their conference records. Prior to that, each school was only required to schedule seven SWAC games, leaving four opportunities for non-conference games.

The major knock on the new format is the inflexibility it leaves for scheduling non-conference games, specifically the lucrative black-college football classics.

"We spent a considerable amount of time on football scheduling," McClelland said. "We realize issues have to be ironed out. Today, everyone had the opportunity to air out all the issues involved.

"We are looking at the format and how we can effectively work with the mandate," McClelland continued. "We established a subcommittee to look at the feasibility of setting it back to a seven-game format while at the same time using the conference office to enforce a conference schedule."

SWAC commissioner Robert Vowels, Jr. said he understands athletic directors' gripes with the new scheduling rules, but contends that a nine-game conference schedule could work.

"For those that don't understand it, it's been a mixed view," Vowels said. "The reason we went to a nine-game schedule was because several schools had a difficult time scheduling non-conference games. If we played nine games in the conference, they only have to find two non-conference games. It made scheduling easier.

"With the seven-game schedule, that gave schools four non-conference games which helped generate revenue for the schools. With two less non-conference games, from a revenue standpoint, it's been a challenge."

Eyebrows were raised when the conference's presidents voted to excuse Southern and UAPB from their match-up after the schools' athletic directors could not agree on a date. But three Western Division school presidents, including UAPB?s Lawrence Davis, Jr., did not get the chance to vote on the matter.

SWAC commissioner Robert Vowels Jr. said Davis failed to join the conference call in time to cast his vote. Davis has said he tried to call in time to vote but was initially given the wrong number.

"At the time of the conference call, we knew two presidents would not be on," Vowels said. "(UAPB) came on late to the call, so they were not able to put forth any communication on the matter. It is an issue we need to go back and discuss."

UAPB athletic director Craig Curry presented his school?s case during a closed meeting with the SWAC?s athletic directors and senior women?s administrators. Southern AD Floyd Kerr also gave his school?s point of view.
Vowels said UAPB would be allowed to formally speak on the matter when the presidents? council convenes for voting on Thursday.

"We will talk about it extensively," Vowels said. "Craig Curry made a very eloquent presentation that brought forth several options to think about. He submitted a statement that the presidents will be allowed to look at and read over on Thursday."

Others in the conference are simply hoping that whatever is decided falls in line with the rules already in place.

"I think that?s what it?s going to boil down to," said Grambling State AD Albert Dennis. "They never got a chance to participate in the (conference) call. (Curry) recommended remedies, but it?s all gonna go back to whether or not the SWAC constitution was followed and the presidents? council."

It's good that they realize that some formal committee need to be established to assist in this scheduling snafu but that "sub" could still be just somatics, but we'll have to take their word for it.

How does he think it can work when he can't make a simple decision on the matter?

It stills looks bad when a decision for division games is decided by the eastern division. 3 out of the 5 western division schools didn't vote on the matter and 1 of the main participants wasn't there either. At that point it should have been TABLED and another time should have been selected to convene for settling this matter. Now they are going to have to go back and make another decision on this matter but it may be a moot point since it has been voted on (thats where the Swac constitution is gonna come in). Can it be brought up again with another vote on the same matter?

IT's good that they (UAPB) has brought up options they never got to present the first time, hopefully it will work out this time.

I hope it can be worked out. I've said before that I don't agree with not playing a divisional opponent. I also hope that they can get everything worked out. As for Pete working with the Asst. Commish to present a model for scheduling, I can see a concern that 1 person is involved but I can also understand using 1 person at this point. They may have gone with a 1 on 1 concept to not have to work around the schedules of several people, especially since they may have had a short period of time to put something together. They might not have seen it as a problem since it it just a model and the other coaches will be present in Biloxi to alter it. Even though I'm a SU supporter, I don't see any other coach that would be a better representative for a 1 on 1 concept. As some others have said, Pete has been there the longest. He was there before Rudy put in the divisional format. He was there during the divisional format. He was there when non divisional teams started rolling off of the schedule. He was there when the 9 game mandate came up and unlike Hughes and Doug (who also strongly supported the 9 game mandate) he is still there.

He may have also been part of the 1 on 1 concept to get his feedback since he won't be at the spring meetings.

Last but certaily not least, Pete not only brings tenure but also a high level of SWAC SUccess. He's the current SWAC Coach of the Year and has won 5 SWAC championships.

I would hope that the coaches would take a model and work with it so that it will include their visions for their programs. You have to start somewhere and I'm glad to see that they are at least getting input from the coaches. The intial articles about the SWAC scheduling had me thinking that 1 man (Vowels) would be doing this.

I can only hope common sense would prevail for "the good of the conference" and PB will be hosting Su on Nov. 20

Robber, I am on board....we are Busch league.

Why a ten team conference, with two seperate divisions, lead by educated men and women, can't come up with a sinply format to follow to play football games.....is beyond me. They are forming group after group, when there are already conference models that can be followed.

1. If we are going to play all 9 SWAC games, fine. That is the way it used to be. Scrap the East/West format in football and the conference champ is determined by conference record. What good is a SCG when all teams have already played each other.

2. Go back to the old 7 game mandate like all other large conferences that are split into divisions. Mandatoy games against all teams in your division, and rotate 3 games with teams from the oppisite division. If the logic was to ensure teams would not have schedule problems, then that plan has fallen by the wayside. Keep the SCG.

3. Correct the problem for this season. SU has to play UAPB. That is a divsional contest and could have an impact on who wins the division. A game against a Eastern div team should be rearranged, if a game has to be missed.

But that's all I have on the issue. Yall continue on with the bling loyalty. That is truly the greatest SWACpage tradition......

If this game is so important, the SWAC could replace the SU/ASU game with SU/UAPB. This game is scheduled for 10/2 and UAPB has an open date on 10/2. SU would still have 3 East teams (Alcorn, JSU and AAMU) on its schedule.

I'm not sure if ASU would have 3 West teams after dropping SU.

So in other words, lets complicate the process even more right? Instead of just using the Nov. 20th open date, lets just.......you know what....I give up.

so now, ASU gets pulled into the mix and now will have a 10 game schedule, huh?

Folks, this thing is SO simple. Nov 20 is the date. Honestly, I understand about wanting an open date, but an open date is not a necessity, and its certainly not worth the cost of what's happening here.

With a lil objectivity, anyone would see that this is a no brainer.

So, now we should screw up Bama State's schedule just to keep SU from playing on 11/20??? This is beyond s _ _.:(
