<MCC STORY>Football scheduling will be a paramount focus as the Southwestern Athletic Conference holds its spring meetings Monday through Thursday at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Miss.

The emphasis has arisen after the conference ran into several snags on its way to implementing a mandated nine-game format for the 2004 season.

Southern Athletic Director Floyd Kerr said he expects the conference to announce which seven games count toward divisional standings.

Plus, with SWAC Commissioner Robert Vowels Jr. intending to have the conference dictate a master schedule for all SWAC games, this could be the first time the schools may see the proposed master plan.

"We want to build a five- to 10-year schedule," Kerr said. "We hope to confirm '04, then build the schedule from '05 to 2015." Kerr said SWAC Assistant Commissioner Duer Sharp, in his first year with the SWAC, has worked with Southern football coach Pete Richardson to "develop a model for us to look at."

However, at least three presidents -- from UAPB, Texas Southern and Prairie View (all Western Division schools) -- did not vote in that conference call.

Like I said when this was just released; Slade didn't vote on the matter.

Here's a problem already.........

Please elaborate on your point, because I think we all understand if you don't vote you relinquish any power that you may have had.

as for UAPB we couldn't vote due to the fact we had the wrong phone number and that is not our fault, personally I feel they need to redo the schedules for the upcomig season they have enough time the season doesn't start til the 4 of September. I mean it is just crazy when u have three school from one division not voting and u still make a decision.....:what:

Leave Pete arse away from making schedule suggestions. He helped with last one and see where we are at now. Let the A.D.s work on the scheduling.

And just where did you come up with that?

This 9-game mandate that everybody on this board claims to hate so much was a product of Pete and Hughes when the time came around that JSU was going to rotate off of SUs schedule. I won't be suprised if the new format is a little more biased to others. Let's just say that.

why is Pete the scheduling expert? Why not form a committe? Why just 1 coach? Why are we so backwards?

Maybe cause he's been in the SWAC the longest of all coaches. DUH!!!!!! Yall know how to make a mountain of a mole hill huh?

Didn't the SWAC come out with a 10 year schedule for each team in 1998. I remember seeing a 7 game rotation schedule for each team when Rudy was President.

Why is this such a big issue now when a schedule was already created.

Maybe you don't understand the difference between voting for a 9 game mandate that Hughes, Pete, & Doug all did in trying to assure that all the schools in the SWAC got a game from the B3 and making a schedule.

Pete has never had anything to do with making the SWAC schedule, h3ll until recently he hasn't had anything to do with making SU's schedule. Again I asked you where did you get that from and show proof.

Now as for the silly comments you made about it being biased to others do tell us what you mean by that and explain it. Do you think that the SWAC office will schedule PV, MVSU, & UAPB twice all in one season and then have the BC as SU's finale while scheduling SU to play GSU seven times prior to that with the previous six games only counting against GSU?

Help us all who have very little knowledge or wisdom about these sort of things because I'm honestly confuse. Or is it you think that he may have all the lower tier schools to play SU the first part of the season and have the higher tier schools in the SWAC play each other early so they can cancel each other out.

I'll be waiting anxiously for your answer over here===============>

It aint no hate, just questioning how 1 coach from a school that wouldn't agree to play a game on a common open date get to assist in making a master schedule. Do you not think that if he wouldn't agree to that, that he will attempt to give SU a favorable schedule for better dates when playing opponents? There is no other coach involved in this process, not even one from the other so-called B3 schools. This should be a committee that works on this and none of them should be coaches. But I think there are folks on this board that can do better scheduling than what the Swac office can do.

Actually I would say yes to that, well to a point. No to put all of the lower teams together against SU but to make it where with potential injuries they can have a softer schedule during certain times of the season and other teams can have a harder team to play before playing SU. Everyone else can see the conflict that can arise from this but you will consider everyone else as a SU hater in doing this. Thats why there need to be others involved so this conflict or even the look of a conflict can't arise.

Where did you see me calling anyone a SU hater?? Some things don't need to be said because it perpetuated by their actions. But I will say that they are a group with a loser mentality. This is freakin football anybody can get hurt on any given day it's a contact sport and who your playing has about as much to do with that as it does who your practicing against, unless you're admitting that there a few schools that are really on D2 level.

Using that type of loser mentality I guess we better just drop practice all together since that's how we lost Jarmaul George for the year.

Oh yeah, if it were Eddie Rob giving suggestion on how to layout a multi-year schedule none of you would open your mouth and rightfully so, because he has seniority.

Every freaking coach that was even close to Pete's tenure got fired and the one that's left is on a life support. So you're left with a league fill with 1-3 yr old head coaches. Just like there were those that didn't participate in the voting there are I'm sure those that don't want to participate in this, but it's SU fault for leading where others are to lazy or gutless to do.

If you re-read my post will see who was quoted as saying "And the hate goes on and on"

Nope, I would still question it.... even if it was the late great William "Billy" Nicks I would question it, tenure has nothing to do with it. I would want a committee and not 1 coach and a asst commisioner as the article stated. As I said earlier I wouldn't want a single coach on this committee. But you are claiming that others are too lazy or gutless to assist in this matter. We all know that no one else was afforded the opportunity to assist in it. And since injuries can occur at practice over occuring at games you do really need 2 weeks to prepare for GSU since you're scared of getting injuries on the field of play against another schools team, the scout team will injure just fine.

But according to you it takes a loser mentality to think straight and level headed.

Don't be like the Budweiser Horses, take the BLINDERS off.

Hmmmm can you dig it......

The last time I checked, the SWAC consisted of 10 schools. Not just Southern.

Why is it that the SWAC Office is turning to Southern to make a model for something that will affect the entire conference? The office should have told all schools to come up with models and be prepared to present them at the SWAC meetings. Then, they will take the good out of each model and try to come up with a set SWAC schedule. There are a lot of things that could go wrong with one coach and the assistant commissioner (who is only in his first year with the SWAC) making a model for each school to go by.
Do Pete and the assistant commissioner know all of the rivalry games and when they are played? Do they know about those smaller rivalries (like Alcorn-Valley, GSU-JSU, and UAPB-Alcorn) and the dates they are usually played? What about travel considerations? Did they look at the dates on the "model" to make sure that they don't have teams making cross-country trips on back-to-back weekends? Did they factor in dates for games like The Southern Heritage Classic, The John Merritt Classic, Circle City Classic, etc?

There is just too much that could go wrong when you have one person, no matter how long he's been in the conference, and an assistant commissioner that is in his first year, making a schedule for the entire conference. This should have been done by a committee of people (A.Ds, SIDs, coaches, or presidents) so that you could have more than one option to look at. Or they could have all sat down and brainstormed and come up with one good model for the entire conference. Somebody might have an idea that could make the schedule even better. But since the office only worked with Pete on this, that idea may never come to light.

The SWAC is really taking a chance on this.

I already have problems with this Asst. Commish guy, he was the one who told PV to let SU in the SWAC Tournament and if PV would win the series, they get to play TSU. Come to find out, he's on the phone with TSU's Asst. AD, TSU's baseball coach and GSU's coach on the field and they call cador during his game to find out what to do....needless to say, you know the outcome

Now he is running to Pete and Pete only, who won't even be in attendance, to make a model for 9 other schools.

SU will have strategically placed bye weekends or creampuffs the week before their big games while schools like TSU, PV and Alcorn will have major games the week before SU.

Schools like TSU and PV and Alcorn? Come on now. At this point the way the conference is so divided. I would not be shocked if it folded. If WE don't control our council of Presidents which means all of them. Then the SWAC will continue this way of doing business. It aint Pete or the Asst. Commish. It is our fellow Presidents. But carry on with the SU conspiracy. At this point I am almost ready to abandon any hope for our conference. :shame:

Below is the excerpt from the article in 1998. Seeme like all the SWAC has to do is pickup where they left off
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE ROTATION: With the SWAC expanding to 10 teams and splitting into divisional play this season, the conference has adopted a five-cycle plan through 2008 for rotating nondivisional opponents.

By SWAC guidelines, "each university will play each team in the division a total of 10 times during the 10 years. Each university will play each team in the opposing division a total of six times during the 10-year period."
SU Rotation:
1999-2000: Alabama State, Alcorn and Jackson State
2001-2002: Jackson State , Mississippi Valley and Alabama A&M
2003-2004: Alabama A&M Alabama State, Alcorn
2005-2006: Alcorn, Jackson State and Mississippi Valley
2007-2008: Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Mississippi Valley

Some of you all have to be the saddest group of men on earth. What part of model is it that you don't understand? You go around whining about every freakin thing and make up false senarios like Pete's making up the schedule for the entire SWAC. H3ll Pete have enough problems to get SU's adm. to allow him to make up SU's schedule, why in the h3ll do you think he'd be concern with yours?

There's no problem with that, as long as JSU wasn't supposed to play TSU and ALC wasn't supposed to play UAPB. Of course, SU not playing UAPB throws another wrench in the plans.

I wonder if they're going to bend over backwards to make sure all conference games count for both teams, or if because of the missing games, some games will count for only one team.

I guess I can look over it and come up with something.....
