Swac Championship Game

Fellas this game serves no purpose at all. What is the reward for winning the game. And I am pretty sure the payoff for the game is nothing. Besides, the only way there is a big crowd at the game is if Jackson State or Southern is there. No other schools in the conference travel.

Ignorance is Bliss....

Tru the game is in your own state and I bet if AA&M makes it you might put 15,000 people in the seats. Ask Hattiesburg,Ms what it was like when JSU showed up on Aug 31. The town was in total gridlock. The SWAC office is praying you guys don't make it.

Why come I new dude was a hater....hatin cause his school might not be in the SCG. Now he gone from the SCG serving no purpose to who have the best attendance.

That's my point exactly Snake. No one cares about the game unless Jackson State or Southern are in it. Let's see what the crowd is like if Valley shows up to play Texas Southern. I am sure it will be a sell out.

Well one thing is for sure Mighty P.B. Hornet.....ASU won't get to prove how many fans they can bring this year.

MAKE SURE YOU AREN'T IN THE SAME BOAT.

Fellas, let's discuss this w/o the smack.

I personally like the SCG because it gives two teams a quaranteed "bowl" game. The attendance is gonna pick up...I actually think this year's game will have good attendance.

The playoffs are not a quarantee...plus during the years that we did participate, we did not get favorable seedings or placement.
However, even the pairings isn't my main concern. I'm concerned that the payday from the playoffs are not that great. Under the old format, a team had to bid to host the game. That bid involved a "guarantee" to the NCAA. It's conceivable that a program could incur a loss if the attendance isn't as good as anticipated.

Our Commissioner's office needs to take some steps to improve the attendance. The first thing would be to have the game televised live by a major network. I hope Commissioner Vowels could negotiate with NBC, CBS, Fox, or ABC to air the game. The goodwill that they could garner from this would be huge. The next thing is the allotment of tickets to each school in the conference. At the start of the year, give each school 2000 tickets to include as an Option in their season ticket package. The incentive would be that each team gets a percentage of the proceeds from the SCG regardless of who participates. (Of course the largest share would go to the two participants, but each school would get a share of proceeds).

Just a few ideas...would like to know some of your ideas and/or comments concerning mine.

How large is the town of Hattiesburg?

It doesn't matter. Wherever we play unless the team we play is just garbage traffic is on lock, even in larger cities.

How do you know who all cares about the game? That's like someone making a statement saying that because SU is having a bad year, the Bayou Classic is going to be boring. That's a one sided opinion. You're entitled to it. But you can't speak on behalf of everyone else who isn't apart of SU or JSU. Why discredit all of the hard work Grambling and whoever represents the east has put in all year long.

Write me off as a hater if you wish, definitely beginning with next year when everyone has to play everybody else, the game will serve no purpose, IMO. Someone will have already proven they are the best by beating everybody else. At least now, there are some teams you don't have to beat.

And as far was who cares about the game, I'm guessing few folk goes to the game unless (1) their team is in it or (2) they live in Alabama. It's easy to talk about who cares, but there are a lot of people not going to these games.

The SCG should stay because it will be a money-maker and a fun get together. Seems like the only ones who want to drop the games are fans of teams that can't make it to the championship. Jenny Sue, that is you. lol

I think the SCG is a GREAT idea. If you think about DIV- 1A Bowl games that are held on a neutral site, fans from each participating school show-up. Moreover, the host city should be the majority of the people in the stands. Think about it, the SCG or any Bowl game is for the residents of the city to show-up and support the game no matter who is playing.

I think the SCG has drawn well in the 3 years so far. The first year featured SU and JSU. Yes, I will agree that those 2 schools have fans that will travel. Also, you have to remember that year each SWAC school brought their bands, so that also increased attendance.

So, attendance year 1 ~50,000, year 2 ~30,000 and year 3 ~ 30,000. These are not bad numbers. If you look at the playoff attendance in 1-AA, I am sure you will not find these numbers.

Someone mentioned if MVSU and TSU play it would not draw. I am a proud TSU graduate and TSU is only 55 years young. We have only started to focus on football the last 9 years. We are still searching to turn the corner and become a force in the SWAC. Let me give you a little hisorty on Houstonians, if you are not winning the people are staying home. Houston is a big city with so many things to do and the city is so spread out. Most people look for the most for their buck and to get the most enjoyment.

A couple of years ago when our football team went 7-0 and we faced Grambling in San Antonio most people thought we would not travel. Boy were they wrong! The reported attendance was ~26,000. I know that 15,000 were our fans. We traveled far and near for that game. I am a '97 graduate and I know there are so many of our alumni that are just waiting for an opportunity to witness a championship.

Just wait and see how many of us will show for the SCG when we are there in a few years. I SAY KEEP THE SCG...it is good for the SWAC and Black College Football!

TSU ON THE MOVE!!!!!!
