Mississippi Valley Claims Sixth Consecutive Title
HATTIESBURG, MS – Mississippi Valley State breezed through Southern 16-
5 in five innings to capture its sixth straight SWAC Softball Championship
title.
After a scoreless first inning, the Devilettes exploded in the second with
eight runs off of eight hits. Both Ta’Niya Wallace and Tiana Parks
tripled in the inning while Angelia Jones ripped a homer, her second of
the tournament.
Mississippi Valley put up two more runs in the third, highlighted by an
Ashley Hobbs single and Rashundra Brass double to command a 10-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Devilettes rattled off another three hits while scoring
five runs to stretch their lead to 15-0.
The Jaguars finally answered in the bottom of the fourth as Aruba Nicholas
and Chastoni hit singles bringing home runners. Kesha Tauriac also scored
an unearned run in the inning.
The Devilette would score one more run in the fifth before sending
Southern into the bottom of the fifth with a 13 point deficit.
Despite scoring two runs in the inning, the Jaguars final two batters,
Tauriac and Nicholas, struck out to end the game at 16-5.
Rashundra Brass led the Devilettes in the game with three hits and four
RBI’s. Angelia Jones, who recorded two home runs in the tournament, was
voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

congrats to the devillettes! i wanted su to win but valley is by far the best team! no one else was close.....not even su.
They are losing right to Grambling.

THe Lady Devillettes were the best team and will do the best in representing the conference.

SU is playing terrible right now. Not even close to the same team they were earlier in the season. All the injured players(M.Thomas, B. McDavid, and Garcia) should return next weekend @ Gram. I know tSU should feel terrible right now. SU committed 8 errors :retard: in game 3 , and still found a way to win.

Three hours, 47 minutes of pure, incomprehensible bedlam had passed.
Southern right fielder Juan Mujica stepped back into the batter’s box. With the bases loaded and nobody out in the 12th inning against Texas Southern. He faced a 1-2 count.
In a microcosm of the Jaguars’ entire weekend, Mujica had been badly fooled on two curveballs. By then, the crowd at Lee-Hines Field had already seen it all Sunday afternoon — nine errors, 28 hits, three rallies and 36 players used.
The fans clapped, hoping for Southern to pull off the most improbable win of the year.
Mujica swung and blooped a lazy fly ball behind third base. On any other day, it would have been a surefire out.
Somehow, the ball landed on the grass between three Tigers, and pinch-runner Romey Bracey came home.
With that, the Jaguars finished off a three-run rally in the 12th inning to win, 9-8.
