Southern, Wahl battling adversity

He couldn’t hit his targets. His delivery and rhythm were off.

Still, Southern relief pitcher Kyle Wahl kept throwing. He wanted to save Wednesday’s game against Southeastern Louisiana, if only to help the limping, up-and-down Jaguars get on a roll again.

Wahl labored, stuck with it. He battled through three innings and kept the Lions at bay, and Southern got the kind of win it needed — a hard-fought one against a tough baseball team.

Maybe it will serve as a springboard.

Maybe, as the regular season winds down, it will help the Jaguars gain the momentum they want.

“We had a big lead in our division and we’ve staggered a little bit,” Wahl said. “We came home and played a good team. We knew we had to get our focus back together. If we didn’t, they’d embarrass us.”

HATTIESBURG — Victoria Stewart had two runs and two hits to help Southern edge Jackson State 9-8 in a second-round game at the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Friday.

With the victory, Southern advances to take on Mississippi Valley in a winners bracket game at noon today.

Come on Southern beat the brakes off of tissue u. I was upset last year that they slipped in the tournament with that horrible record and embarrassed us nationally. We should send only our #1,2 seeds to the tournament, not a #4 loser like tsu. Southern had the better team last year and they simply deserved to rep us. They also were the most consistent

The game is played on the diamond not the keyboard.

You should be embarrassed a #4 seed beat your #1 seed team on it's HOME FIELD. SU had every opportunity to be my team but you couldn't.

The Devilettes will contend for their sixth consecutive championship title.

Game time is set for 12 noon.

The Lady Jaguars will have to face the winner of the Grambling State-Jackson

State game this afternoon to vie for a spot in tomorrow's title game.

Game #12 - Jackson State Defeats Grambling State, 5-3

Carsheena Blanks and Alla Williams nabbed two hits a piece as Jackson State prevailed past Grambling 5-3 to stay alive in the tournament.

The Lady Tigers will battle it out with Southern this evening at 5:30 p.m. for a spot in the title game tomorrow.

With the loss Grambling is eliminated from the tournament.
