SWAC Band Directors need to learn the rules of when to play

SMH. The fans can make all the noise they want with their voices and hands. The bands fall under NCAA rules. The FBS bands follow this, why can't ALL of the SWAC bands?

No they don't them joker's be playing just as much. Noise is noise doesn't mater if it comes from a horn or a person. The rule is stupid

I've taken note now of FBS bands playing their normal between play fanfares while teams are in the huddle and under center. Might be a certain amount of respect for tradition there.

The FBS bands play in between plays, during timeouts, and after touchdowns and kickoffs. Heck Georgia's band kept playing fanfares even while our QB was under center and snapping the ball last year, and no fuss was made about it.

Florida State's band plays pretty much from the start of the game until the clock hit's zero.

I don't think swac refs value or respect the tradition of hbcu bands and what they bring to the hbcu gameday experience. Many of them just want to flex their authority just to show they run the game on some control freak isht.

The coaches asked that they enforce the rule on kickoffs. Many refs are SWAC alums so they know the tradition.

Playing with the team in the huddle is not against the rule. Once they get to the line and the snap is IMMINENT, then artificial noise must cease....That includes DJ music, bands, cowbells, anything that is not voice or foot stomping. Yell as loud as you want....and play as loud as you want when they are in the huddle. Has nothing to do with tradition or respect.

And the whining about this is bordering on ridiculous now. It's like getting stopped for driving 85 in a 60, and your excuse is "I passed 5 cops doing 85 and none of them stopped me"....

Doesn't say "imminent", it just says "shall not create any noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals" but that's basically the QB's snap count/calls. Huddles are okay, even though most SWAC teams don't huddle these days anyway.

Except they were also playing while the team was under center. And I highly doubt you'll see the refs reprimand one of the better known FBS bands for playing what they traditionally do.

But hey the whole rule is silly to me. 70 - 100K screaming fans will drown out any band, drum, cowbell or anything else so why even be concerned about it. Man up and work around it.

If they are playing softly they will likely let that go. You cannot play full blast while under center. SU band was careful to lower their volume a number of times during the game for that reason. The bands are under the control of the rules, as are the announcers, trainers, administrators, PA system music, etc.

I've seen them warn a band for their snare drums barely tapping the heads. The rule is applied inconsistently even within the same game. I understand that the bands are subject to the rule. That doesn't make the rule any less silly IMO.

I know it doesn't say imminent, but EVERY ref I have ever asked about the specifics of the enforcement of it has used the word.

No argument that this many fans will drown out a band, but although I have seen/heard FBS schools play when they are breaking the huddle, I can not recall an instance that they were playing while the QB was under center or calling signals.

THAT is the big deal....I don't think it's the rule, per se....The application is inconsistent from quarter to quarter, game to game, and crew to crew.

Watch Florida State or Georgia play. They play almost non-stop with those fanfares.

I watch these games, and they DO NOT play when the team is lined up and the snap is imminent. That's about the ONLY time they don't play, and these are the bands I'm talking about who know the rules and abide by them, and STILL play ALL game.

Georgia most definitely did it. They play their Dias Irae fanfare where they sustain the last note. There were several instances where the sustained that note while our QB was under center. Florida State plays their war chant, and have the drums play softly as the crowd chants throughout the entire game. Again it's not like the majority of SWAC bands play in between plays. The few that do get penalize for it. Our issue is with the kickoffs.

Florida State doesn't stop playing

Florida st is my 3rd fav college team behind A&M & Bama. They play all kinda shit and the refs never say anything. Besides war chant they play this weird azz jazz sounding fanfare all the time. It kinda has a swing beat and they play it real fast. If you watch FSU games you will hear it all the time like a broken record. I miss the 90s SWAC when bands played more songs during the game and refs could care less.

Yall are hearing things man.

THANK YOU!!! PERFECT example....go to the 17:00 mark....NO BAND during the play. Almost as soon as the play is over, they play...team goes RIGHT to the line, and as the official backs off the ball, they stop. After the 3rd down play, literally as SOON as the play ends, 4 whistles, and they are playing again.

Technically, kickoffs is against the rule too, but FWIW, I agree, especially since they have allowed it in the SWAC for so long, even while actually enforcing the rule during non-kickoffs. My problem with the whole thing is not the rule, but the inconsistency from crew to crew, and sometimes quarter to quarter with the same crew. But all this "they are playing during the play"....Nah....

I think when these issues with refs/umps come up...the lack of "consistancy", more times not, is the common denominator. Most can deal with bad judgement or bad calls if the calls stayed consistant, instead of being regulated like a musical the refs are trying to produce and direct on the fly

Noise forces the teams to use hand signals/audibles to run the play. Are we saying that our SWAC coaches are not comfortable with teaching those skills? i think they are very capable..... This is an outdated rule that needs change.
