Kids have always been susceptible to COVID. Pre-delta variant 4 million U.S. kids became infected with the virus and there were over 300 deaths in 2020 alone.Kids couldn't really get COVID-19 - now all of a sudden they can - its like we figure it out and then bam - a new variant that attacks the previously immune is let in the air - what's next?
Throughout the pandemic, the messaging had been that kids were at low risk for infection, transmission, and poor outcomes. But that's because there really wasn't enough data out there considering kids were rarely tested for the virus (because they were likely to be asymptomatic) and they were sheltered due to a year of school closures last spring and a reduction in other public activities. But once school started in the fall, cases in kids skyrocketed and were associated with community spread.
With a more transmissible variant (delta) and our country largely no longer engaged in COVID mitigation measures (no masking, no social distancing) combined with more public movement (travel, gathering), kids -- and people in general -- are getting infected at higher rates.
