I can push some buttons too, but I'll wait. Hope for those attending the homecoming they stop by the alumni office and the interim president office and check on what's going on.

It is under control. We know exactly what's going on at our Alma Mater, thank you.

Drumsticks????? SMH. The things people will say to get attention.

Carry on.:emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh:

Drumsticks??????:emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh:

JR, we pledge hard but they had people who would step in and save you. The brothers knew who the crazy folk were and told us never to get caught with them by ourselves. It appears to me that this generation cannot figure the BS out.

JR

That punk kid....:redhot: Ill bet he is having surgery just to make the story sound good. Hell back in the day, he would go out in the field, pull a wagon, bail 3 sacks of cotton, chop down a couple of trees for the fire place, and then plow the field. But this aint back in the day, and these damn kids cant stand any pain. Hell my grandmother woulda rubbed some alcohol on it and tell me to get my black ass outside and play. The nerve of him.

SU B-tone'99,
I read that version about drumsticks used to hit him in the Digest. I didn't buy it though. I mean if all this happened in August what took so long for it to get the Dean's office or to Doc. I smell a scam going on. The kid probably hurt his knee doing something else. I am just glad I marched back in the day. We didn't have none of this bs coming up. Everything was kept internal and under control. Rats and Punks knew not to pursue being in the Jukebox back then. The band was not for the faint of heart. They did not last long. Probably only a few hours after Mommy and Daddy dropped them off for Crab week. They think what's happening to them now is hazing, then I got some stories that would put this one to shame. Hell, I could go through crab week now with ease. Where was my protection back then......just asking.

MD,
You are right about the times. I mean could you imagine some of our great black leaders who have pledged a fraternity back in the day being a wimp or not knowing how to stay out of those uncontolled situations. I am sure you can relate being an Omega man and as a fellow brother who looks to the East. But as you said you had bros who would tell you about the ones to stay away from. I knew never to get caught by upperclassmen in the Drum Section or the Baritone Section when I was crab. Those were some big, crazy mofos. When I pledged I knew exactly which Big Brothers you need not be caught with by yourself. I don't think the new school understands what you are saying MD. I agree with 100% though.

GR and JST,
I don't give a damn what you two have to say about it. If it was a football player you would have said its part of the game. They haze way more than a band. Yeah his azz should have run. Obviously this happened away from practice or at sectional. This kid sure did wait along time to tell. Now he needs surgery. Hmmm..... If my knee got messed up I sure wouldn't have just let it ride. Something ain't right here. Like I said throw all their azz out. Now you happy. Sorry the kid got messed up. But I know it 's more to this story. So enough said. MD has said it all more elegantly than I could. So did H from Tn. State.

I am sorry I seem hard core, but that's how I was raised in Jack town , crabbed hard at SU, pledged even harder and then the Navy brought some heat. Hell we kicked azz at Callaway HS band. Even the girls were no joke. Old school, old way of mentality. But you notice a strange thing. We didn't have all this crap you have now with someone going overboard and breaking knees and crap. I guess we were smarter like MD said.

Our great black leaders have been through ish like this and it didn't faze them. I can just hear ole Thurgood Marshall telling his Alpha big bros not to haze him. Or MLK, or Jesse Jackson telling Omega Psi Phi. I am a punk don't touch me. You guys live in a fairy tell world. But you wouldn't know because neither of you would pledge or probably even serve this country in the military.
I am sure our special forces fighting right now would have been
better off not hazed when they went through their deal to be ready for action.

All I know going through what I did at SU helped me through my Navy training. I saw alot of cats punk out and quit, because they had never been through nothing. But that's how you new school mofos like it. Oh well. GR, we've been through this before. You know I ain't soft about this kind of ish. So call me what you want.
And it has nothing to due with me going to SU. It all started in Jackson , MS were I was born and raised by a JSU family. So shake your head at that. LOL

JR

Im on your side mannnn. We all know that to be a good drummer you need to be able to take an ass whoopin. He probably had it coming to him.

As For me, If I didnt see it it didnt happen.

Hazing is UNIVERSAL!

So don't trip guys. It is also ridiculous and it is also criminal. I pledged "old school" style and yes I survived it. But it did not make be a "better" soror. There are sorors who pledged grad chapter, at PWCs, after 1980, you know the ones we call "Shake-n-Bake", you are hard working, dedicated, and wonderful examples of finer womanhood. THE HAZING BY EVERY GROUP MUST STOP NOW! Dayum, how many more will have to be injured, maimed, killed to prove some assine point that I WAS STRONG!

One day you younger guys will have children who are college age and going to your alma maters, and pledging your frat/sorority, joining your band, being just like you and you are going to be proud as hell...then when one chokes on liver at the death march, or bleeds from the rectum during Hell Week closing night, or gets burned with cigarettes while sitting in the Alpha chair, it will be some HSIT! Hazing will matter then!

STOP THE VIOLENCE AT SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY! and all HBCUs, and take off those blinders, yes it happens at your alma mater TOO!

Well I never thought i'd see the day that a Sag would take responsibility for anything... SS are you sure this isnt somehow JSUs fault?

Whoa!!! Seeing Spots,
That stuff you just said is what I mean about going overboard with it. Like MD said you can control all that. I just wish these young cats learn that. No it doesn't make a better frat or soror, but I've seen some skate in the frat and ain't worth a damn because it was easy. Did it for the wrong reason and missed every shrine they could. I can attest some of them are the worst of bruhs. So it goes both ways. Liver poisioning and riding blindfold on a motorcyle and yes getting your knee cracked is not acceptable. My point is the stories have changed several times about this incident. So who's telling the truth. Who knows. I just get tired of hearing the whining and moaning. And if I had a college kid and they asked me, I'll tell them what the deal is. So they want do it blindly. Nor will they get caught up in something that is not right. Like pledging something underground when you know the chapter has been suspended for years (like what's going on a certain school on this board who thinks nothing ever happens with their band). You are asking for trouble. My other two cents worth.

As Freshmen football players we had to ride on the motor. It was clearly understood that all freshmen would be paddle after the last game of the season. Our last game was with Miles College in B'ham. All the upperclassmen put their paddles in their traveling bags. Knowing that we were not going to play in the game, Big John and I stole all the paddles and threw them over the fence at Rickwood Park. After the game they had no paddles. When we returned to Normal, AL they set up the whipping in the training room. Big John and I went to Pulaski, TN to party that Saturday Night. When we got back the team was waiting for us to take our whipping. We refused to go down to the training room. The freshmen butts were still bleeding. There was no way we were going to take a whipping without fighting. So we pulled off our belts and wraped them around our hands. We placed our backs together and knock the fisrt two silly. Then they got scared and stopped. Later that night, when I went to the bathroom they were waiting, so they lifted me into the air and starter hitting me but I was trying to kill the one I had around the neck. So they let me go because I was chocking one of them to death. They figured they had won after the 15 sec encounter. All l got was about four licks.

When the coach heard about it, he didn't like the fact that we fought back. During pledging, we started fights when things got rough. Again, if you couldn't think they would try to kill you.

You know little, young, fresh barrister it turns me on how you immediately jump on all my posts with those stimulating responses. Oh I love it when you call me out on the board.

All this time the ONLY thing about Jackson State that remotely interested me was the Boom's entrance song...now I got you!:emlaugh:

Oh babycakes, I am glad to provide you with new experiences with a citizen of the Jaguar Nation!

about that SU thing, it has happened every year

when I was there I saw someone arrested so not like it is major news.

Seeing Spots:
Your comments are right on point. This kind of foolishness needs to cease at ALL insititutions.

Hopefully these few band members will get what they deserve and the rest won't be penalized for this nonsense. I always thought hazing was a senseless part of joining a Greek and was the main reason I did not join one.

Jag Voice, pledging was not all bad because about 90% of the Frat was about scholarship. It was the 10% that created problems. We had big brothers that did not want any dummies on the line because they were determine to maintain the highest average of any Greek letter organization on campus. They made us study for 4 hours every night and assisted anyone who were having problems in the classroom. From ten to twelve we learned what the Frat was about. After twelve the DP said go home but that 10% demanded that you come by their room. Those who went caught hell, but some of us had the good sense not to go. The next day I would have my lie together. The good part is the 90% made you think, the 10% was interested in whipping. In life the 10% is still around. On the Job, at church, in the frat, and everywhere you go.

Preach MD, Preach!!! I am glad someone such as yourself can shed some light on the subject. I detect a negative vibe about frats and the hazing stuff on the board. It wasn't like that when I was at SU. Most of it was positive.

You hit the nail on the head. You will always have that 10% no matter where you go always wanting to go against the right way of doing things. I can remember some of my LB's getting caught by some big brothers who our DP told us not to go with unless he was there. I was LOL about getting your lie straight to tell the big brothers. One of my LB's line name is "Alibi" and another is named "Undercover" Those names are self explanantory.

I guess things are not what they used to be. Academics were our first priority. Off my line alone we have some bad cats out there contributing to society in a positive manner and they will tell you they owe alot to the band and our frat to be where they are now. And in some cases they owe it all to that experience. Just the experience alone was invaluable. I hate so many us have been turned off by a few. All of these organizations were created to positive things. Maybe we need to go back and look at what was right then and why has it turned so wrong now.

it must stop

Listen

No smack intended what so ever

Although this is a sad incident, hazing is wrong

and should be completely outlawed.

I understand it was done way back, but hey this is 2000 and not the stone ages.

So, I am not an advocate and hey if some one hit me I probably wiould go to the powers that be also. Pleaser respect me because this is my opinion. Hey, I hope the kid is ok. Hey, to me it does not have anything to do with being a wimp or anything. YOu are still a man. So that is just it

Hazing must end period.

NO SMACK ATTENDED

HAZING MAKES SCHOOLS LOOK BAD

It's like this.....

I feel that hazing is warranted in the right situations.
I know that I about to get a lot of heat off of this....but this is just my opinion.

I'm not saying that beating azz is the answer, but I feel that there should be a basis or structure that band freshman should follow.

If you are not or haven't been a band student....you have no idea how outlandish, and disrepectful these incoming freshman can be...They come in with this lazy, lackadazeical attitude like we owe them, and we need them. This same attitude, is a major factor in the demise of any program, be it sports, band, fraternity, etc. Some people are on this thread acting like they had no idea this was going on.....but you'd be really, really upset if you came to the game on Saturday, and the show was lacking (meaning that you were not entertained).

I'm not saying that students should be beat.....or hit with drumsticks....but I do believe that some sort of decorum should be maintened.

An example: You can tell a student to stop talking....
What happens when they don't correspond???

If I talk bad to them....they'll tell and say it's hazing.
If I make them exercise...They'll tell and say it's hazing.
If I single them out....they'll go and tell it's hazing.

I know old-heads, and current band heads feel me.....

I mean the military hazes.....on a constant basis!!! My boy is in the navy and the things he told me he went through earlier this year....even I was like DAYUM!!!
But this sort of treatment is needed....would you feel safe if they admitted civilians into the military without proper training???

Why can't the same thing be applied to us???
Without proper training....you'd see some of the sloppiest, worst sounding shows.....Every band has 2-4 weeks to teach a bunch of high school kids as much music and band technique as possible to entertain YOU, the fan for the first game in September.

Hazing has been going on since the beginning of time.....
Some of you are getting hazed in your work place and don't even know it!!!!

Beating Azz is not called for......
But hey....if you took every hazing incident, on every college campus on the nation, and took these people and expelled them....the only thing that would be less is the classrooms would be the teacher....flat out.

great discussion

SOG, this tread should be moved to the round table discussion. Other than a few un-named posters there seem to be open, honest dialog going on. ;)

YEAH

Well PUT SUPA

I mean hey that's just like when you were a little kid. Hey, your parents whipped you and that was worse than hazing to me. Hey, but it instilled displine. I agree there should be some disciplinenary measures enforced, but beating a kids a#4 that is not cool at all. If you want people to bond, people should think about going to Church together or going out to the movies in a group. Hey, there is more than one way to bond you know.

Just my 2 cents and opinion

For once we on that level......
Students that stuggle together, work better as a unit.
They have fewer disagreements, and they are more unified.

Call it brainwashing, discipline, hazing, whatever, it's a proven fact.

Alot of you on here are quick to jump on the hazing is wrong bandwagon.....

But you sat in those bleachers, drank your beers and ate your hotdogs screaming "GO TEAM GO....GO BAND GO!!!!"

You never cared less what we did.....as long as we were there to entertain YOU.....

Little Timmy or Jan aren't going to tell you that they knew that they had to know their music, but decided to go to the union to shoot pool instead....
Your child would never tell you, well I did go to the interest meeting....and I walked willingly throught the door to that pledge club.....

Some of these folks are so spoiled, you couldn't imagine some of things they've been through. The only one's that tell are the ones that are crybabies, and are upset because they aren't getting their way....

And it's a proven fact that these are the ones that are the WORST hazers the next year when the tables are turned....

The truth hurts....but I'm just telling you like it is....
Like the saying goes...."Until you walked a mile in my shoes....."
The same principal applies here....it takes a "true band member" to understand how a good program is ran....and how to maintain it.
