SU Band Members on Probation for Alleged Hazing Incident
It's possible you won't see the 'human jukebox' at this year's Bayou Classic in New Orleans -- or possibly any other game for that matter. That's *if* -- *if* band members are involved in any more incidents like the one they're being warned about right now. The band has been put on probation by the school because of hazing. The alleged hazing happened in August. School officials say two band members hit a freshman band member on the back with drumsticks and forced him to do excessive exercises - which resulted in a knee injury. Those incidents have resulted in the entire band being placed on probation for the rest of this semester.
With an off week for the Jaguars, the human jukebox performed at Sunday's Saints game. They're scheduled to be in Shreveport Saturday for S-U's game with Mississippi Valley. But university officials are keeping tabs on band members after alleged hazing incidents. Dean of student life Bob Bennett said, "if anything happens, they'll be suspended indefinitely." Bennett says it'll be his decision if the university stops the band from playing. Bennett added, "the reason I included the entire band, as I told you before, is because there were others who mentioned that this had occurred so the probation is more of a warning than a punishment."
School officials say band director Dr. Isaac Greggs originally had the two band members arrested in September. The pair of unnamed juniors face simple battery charges. We're told the victim - the freshman - has withdrawn from school and had to have knee surgery as a result of injuries he suffered. The band is a mainstay at all football games but not playing in the stands wouldn't be a first. The SWAC suspended the Southern band after an on-field fight at Prairieview A and M back in 1998.
