MH, refresh my memory. You know TP has gone on so many tangents. LOL

Do you not think Comegy is a good coach? Or was that TP.

I know TP didn't like the way he left NSU hanging and neither did I. But of course we don't know what really happened with that. It just looked shady and JSU don't need that type of situation right now.

Comegy might be the TO of HBCU coaching. LOL

Re: Is Jackson the Man for JSU............Clarion Ledgers Rick Cleveland

quote: by Harold Jackson

"But I don't want to get involved if they're going to do it like they did it last time," Jackson said. "I couldn't work for the guy who ran the last search."

That guy is Roy Culberson, JSU's athletic director ? at least for the time being . . .

Culberson, who has been out of his office this week, has said he would not be part of the search for a new coach. "You ask me, that's tantamount to saying he won't continue as athletic director. I mean, have you ever heard of a search for a coach that did not include the athletic director?" . . .

Here's what I think.

I believe that Comegy is behind the scenes lobbying hard to become JSU's next head coach . . . AND Athletic Director. Yeah, I know that's rare in today's college football world, but there are a few examples. First of all, Comegy himself, is both football coach and AD at Tuskegee. Also, Watson Brown is both football coach, and AD at UAB.

If Comegy could pull this off, it would accomplish two things: First, it would give him the money he needs to make the move, assuming you add $85,000 for coaching and maybe $75,000 for AD duties, totalling $160,000. Secondly, and most importantly, it would offer "Slick Rick" a/k/a Comegy, the control he wants and needs to run his program the way he wants to - and most of us around here knows what that means. :smh:

But that's just my theory. Who knows what's really going on.

That last statement is interesting. He's trashed us many times before this. Even going back to the Gordon firing. In the mid 90's when we were winning he trashed u about the missing equipment fiasco(which had nothing to do with sports) and how unorganized we were. In a University our size, there's always going to be negative things that you can highlight. He's a columnist so if that's what he wants to do then fine. But don't expect me to cheer him on. Especially when he gives USM and MSU the opposite treatment.

Yep he has ......but can you HONESTLY say that he was telling lies. Not taking sides, he was not the only one trashing us about the missing equipment. THAT STARTED OUT AS A NEWS ARTICLE. Then they did the same thing when equipment came up missing at USM. Again, I didn't say he HAS NOT TRASHED US. I said he has not trashed us for no reason. The equipment bungle was an embarrisment to JSU at a time the AYERS case was about to be resolved. How you gonna give a University over $200 million if the people in charge can't keep up with computers and equipment. And man .....evidently you don't read him often. He's been ripping Mississippi State a new one every since they HIRED Jackie Sherrell.

Also, and maybe this is just me, but the entire article has a paternalistic feel to it. And its not just this article but almost all of his articles about JSU. Whatever's going at a JSU, I don't want any sportwriter taking a "father knows best" apporach when it comes to us. The fact is John Mackenzie and Harold Jackson aren't the most qualified candidates for this job. But he feels that's who we should hire because it would be "best" for us to hire an alum. Or maybe Comegy because he's done a good job at "historically black universities" before. Its almost like he's telling us we should stick to our own and stay away from Dwight Mann's coaches. Again, maybe its just me. But that kind of thinking will keep you 2 steps behind.

One last thing about Bell: We all know he failed. But let's not mistake WHY he failed. It had nothing to do with his being an outsider or his lack of HBCU experience. Those factors may have played a minor role, but it was at best a marginal reason for his failures. The reason Bell failed was because he didn't know what he was doing as a headcoach. Some assistants just aren't headcoaching material and he's one of them. Bell's failings were mostly personal. We could've hired someone from a similar background with a better nack for coaching and public relations and he would've done fine.

As for the last part about BELL, I as well as the other 2 million people in Mississippi agree he didn't know what he was doing as a head coach period. The other part is because of non-existant support comming from day 1 when he was RAMMED down our throat's.

BTW: Did you see the interviews with MASON and BELL last night on TV12?

Dr.Johnnie knows who the next JSU coach should be...

Braves coach touts ASU assistant and ex-JSU QB McKenzie for Tigers' job

The nine-person search committee in charge of finding Jackson State's new football coach will meet for the first time on Thursday in Jackson.

Alcorn State coach Johnny Thomas won't take part in that meeting or any other meeting that follows in the upcoming weeks. He won't have a say in who gets interviewed and who doesn't.

That hasn't stopped him from campaigning for his offensive coordinator, John McKenzie, a former standout quarterback at Jackson State who was recently inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame.

"In my mind, Coach John McKenzie is the only qualified person that Jackson State could hire, and it would really make a difference," Thomas said. "I have been around Coach McKenzie for the last four years and I know what he can do.

"He's an outstanding organizer, he's a competitor, he's a great recruiter, he works well with the guys," Thomas continued. "He's a family man. He's been in the SWAC, he's played in the SWAC and he coaches in the SWAC. He's part of a team that's winning and he knows the ins and outs of this particular conference. And he knows the nature of Jackson State University fans and the institution and what to expect."

1. That missing equipment fiasco was an embarrasment. But it was way overblown considering most of the so-called equipment was old and outdated. And it had nothing to do with our athletic department. Furthermore, USM had as much or more missing equipment than we did. But there wasn't a peep from Cleveland. He went out of his way to trash us about something that was out of his area of expertise.

2. I saw the Mason interview. All I can say is believe half of what you see and none of what you hear. I didn't see Bell's; I thought it was tonite.

Part 2 from Bell and Mason is on tonight.

Re: Is Jackson the Man for JSU............Clarion Ledgers Rick Cleveland

Well, I am pulling for Harold Jackson or John Mckenzie...we do need some JSU blood to restore our football program and also someone that knows how to recruit. I am almost sure that Harold Jackson will take a cut in pay to come back to Jackson to HC at JSU. He is ready to leave California: think about it; the cost of living is less expensive in MS than it is in CA.

California? Baylor is in Waco, TX.

And I'm don't see how his being from JSU makes him a better candidate than Comegy or Shannon or White.

Harold is in Texas at Baylor. Texas has no state income tax and houses there believe it or not are cheaper than the Jackson area in some cases.

He basically gave his same comment about how he cares about the kids and how he wanted to put acdemics first. Typical Bell speak.

Re: Is Jackson the Man for JSU............Clarion Ledgers Rick Cleveland

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Considering his past ............Actually it was the best interview he has ever done.
He was cool. He was ole smiley without the smurk. :emlaugh:

He was talking about what he's accomplished personally with the players, and the reaction they had after that grusome loss to UAPB. Let's just say the words he carefully picked painted a pretty bleak picture of how bad the players felt about that one..............sorta "last straw drama". :shame:

The reporter asked a lot of tough questions and he answered them all. :)
I gonna see if I can find the interview.

Yes, I know that Baylor is in TX but Harold also lives in CA, because I have a friend that are friends with him and they stay a street over from each other in CA.

I just think Harold would do better as HC than the other three mentioned above. Just my two cent worth. :)

Re: Is Jackson the Man for JSU............Clarion Ledgers Rick Cleveland

JSU should hire Mac

That would immediately make Alcorn 0-11 again like the year before he turned them around. With the overwhelming talent he could get while at JSU, this would be a cant miss. He has proven that he can win if he has equal talent to his opponent. The other guys have proven that they cant win even if their talent is overwhelming. Mac brings along QBs, and can run a high powered or practical offense. He even made Donald Carrie look good....and its obvoius the man can recruit. Lastly, he is young, and this job would be the penacle and not just a stepping stone job for him. We dont need another clown here acting like he is doing us a favor.

What!!! GR and I agree. Co-Sign the whole post. I said in another thread I am a John McKenzie fan. Don't know what happened at JSU with him as the OC under Big Daddy that have some not liking him. He also did decently at Deleware State with his hands tied. Plus he has grown as a coach over the years. That would be my first choice if I was hiring for JSU.

I agree with that this would be the pinacle for Mckenzie and not a stepping stone. All the John Shannon supporters would be mad the day he left JSU for a bigger and better job in his mind. That's why I think he will pass even if there is an offer.

This is scary JR and GR in agreement.

Dirt winston and other candidates at JSU

Dennis "Dirt" Winston would also be a guy that I would believe would be a good candidate for JSU to look at. He was a finalist at TSU and should have probably been the guy for the job should it have not been for the lame duck president at TSU naming Webster the head coach instead of what would have been the AD's choice.

That said here is why I believe that Coach Winston would be a great choice for JSU and its fans. 1. He brings with him both Division 1A coaching and playing experience( as a player at the University of Arkansas as a Coach Arkansas, Arkansas State and Toledo) 2. From and HBCU point of view He would bring with him a black national championship in his days as the defensive coordinator at Grambling. He was also the defensive coordinator at Kentucky State. 3. He would bring creidtablity with him from the professional ranks as well.( Having played with the Pittsburgh Steelers during their super bowl runs as well as the New Orleans Saints. and now with his coaching in the Candiaian league as the Defensive line Coach at the Edmonton Eskimos.

He also brings with him very strong ties to the most important recruiting areas to JSU. In that he grew up in Eastern Arkansas, has recruited Memphis for several years and has strong ties in Texas, Alabama and Louisiana all states that have SWAC affiliations. He is also tied to a lot of the success that Toledo has had both offensively and defensively in the fact that the starting qb at Toledo is from the Pittsburgh area and was recruited by coach Winston.

That being said I do believe and know for a fact that Dirt Winston would bring with him a strong staff of gentlemen who have coached not only in the SWAC, but who have coached at several major 1A and 1AA programs across this country.

I do believe that JSU must find the most qualified person for this job and to get it turned around.

You can look to the Harold Jackson and the Fred Jacksons of this world and that is all great but the biggest hold up is going to be financial part of it you must find away to pay the head coach but also the assistant coaches who are also there to help build this program and turn it around.

Re: Dirt winston and other candidates at JSU

An excellent choice for the head coach at JSU but finally someone is on my side. I put Dirt Winston their from the start when Bell got fired now people will know my posts are true.

Thanks,

LOL..I know what you are talking about. Man, it's obvious but it's takes someone like TP to see through the fog.

...and yes, he could have named his price. Mason will pay you if he wants you. Mason called the man to town personally before Bell was hired BUT he let Culberson make his own bed.

We have a chance to choose between 2 candidates(White and Comegy) with proven success as headcoaches or an assistant(Shannon) with a long and successful track record as a OC on both the 1-A and 1-AA level. Now you're saying we should bypass them for a coach with a losing record as a HC and just a decent record as an OC? Doesn't make any sense. I can see why Southern likes McKenzie after what he's done to him, but the search committee has to look at his entire career, not just a few games. From where I sit, it appears that Comegy might be the best "compromise" candidate. He has a proven record and has JSU ties with current assistant Derrick MCCall and former assistant Shawn Gregory.

Its probably gonna shake out that its Shannons job if he wants it. If you believe what you read on the internet, he is interested. He should Have gotten the Job in 2000 when JockWash got the position. 2nd on the list will probably be Comegy. I would really like to see what he can do with our program.

If Rick Comegy comes to J-State, we might as well start chanting "THEY'RE BAAAAACK!!!!!!!" But they ain't getting nobody for 85K.......

They'll get him if they make him the AD, too. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that happens, but all of jsu other athletic programs will suffer because Comegy will put all the money in football. Ask any of the Tuskegee folks about him doing that.
