Harold Jackson is on my list of candidates, but the negative on him is the lack of head coaching or coordinator experience. That doesn't mean he could not rebuild Jackson State. He deserves an interview and consideration. NOTE to EVERYONE John Shannon isn't coming back His stock is on the rise and it wouldn't surprise me to see him as a head coach in the MAC before long. My first choice and nobody seems to be talking about him is:
Fred Jackson (Age 55) -- Michigan assistant head coach. A native of Baton Rouge, La., Jackson was an all-conference quarterback at Jackson State after leading the conference in passing during the 1970 season. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Jackson State in 1972. Jackson has a great reputation but he's over 50 now and has been passed up for D-I jobs. He is an acclaimed recruiter and has had his current position since the Wolverines' co-national championship season in 1997. He was voted 2001 National Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association and was a finalist in 2000 for the Broyles Award, as top assistant coach. He's also been an offensive coordinator at Toledo, Purdue, Wisconsin and Michigan. Jackson reportedly turned down a number of NFL assistant jobs, including one with the New York Giants, to keep his head coaching hopes alive. Michigan went to major bowl games when Jackson served as offensive coordinator and he won 7 games each year at Wisconsin while there as OC. So he has the coordinator's experience, he currently coaches running backs, he is a JSU alum and he is a good recruiter. That should be the guy we want. Then, hire an OC that we can groom to take over when Jackson retires.
