Jackson drops out of JSU coach hunt

Former Tennessee State and Alabama State coach L.C. Cole added to short list

Coaching search

Who's In
John McKenzie - Alcorn State
Rick Comegy - Tuskegee
L.C. Cole - Lane

Who's Out
Harold Jackson - Baylor

Jackson State begins the interview stage in its search for its next football coach today as planned.

However, Baylor receivers coach Harold Jackson won't be one of the three coaches interviewed, according to people with knowledge of the search.

Jackson was one of three finalists, along with Tuskegee coach Rick Comegy and Alcorn State assistant John McKenzie. But Jackson withdrew his name from consideration over the weekend. That apparently opened the way for former Tennessee State and Alabama State coach L.C. Cole.

Comegy, whose team plays in Saturday's Pioneer Bowl in Charlotte, and Cole are scheduled to interview with the nine-person search committee today in Jackson. Cole didn't make the original short list but was the first alternate.

McKenzie is scheduled to interview Wednesday.

The search committee is expected to meet at the conclusion of those three interviews and then make a recommendation to JSU president Ronald Mason Jr. by Dec. 2.

HELLO PROBATION!! :xeye: :vomit:

Did ya'll notice how every sportscast last night ended the story about COLE on the list with "he's a rebuilder, he will bring you wins, but he left 2 schools in turmoil" speach.

They give this job to COLE and our shat is finished. :xeye:

"Trust me, I would welcome a call from them," Cole said. "This is the third time I've applied for the job so that should tell you right there how interested I am in the job."

I dont know Stag. I believe if we can get LC without Johnny, we may be alright.

JSU president Ronald Mason Jr. said how much the new coach makes depends a lot on who the new coach is.

Southern University's Pete Richardson is the highest paid coach in the SWAC. He makes $200,000. Alcorn State's, at $75,000 a year, Johnny Thomas is the lowest paid coach in the league.

"Eighty-five is definitely on the low end," Mason said. "We're not going to be Southern University, I can say that. But we would like to be competitive with the other members of the conference.

Cole, no doubt, would love to be part of those negotiations. He spent this past season as defensive coordinator at Lane, the same position he held at Concordia (Minn.) the previous season.

"I thought I had the job the first time when (Robert) Hughes got it," Cole said. "Then this last time, Bell got it. I don't know what's going to happen; I was first told that they had their three candidates. It look like I'm in between the crossroads again."

Man ....................All bullshat aside .....................I WOULD RATHER NOT TAKE THE CHANCE. :nod2:

We have already been through the 3 worst years in JSU HISTORY football wise, and with COLE........................say what you want about HIM not actually being "caught" by the NCAA, but trouble follows this guy. :(

Why take a chance on this guy. We don't need anymore bullshat. This is the chance to do it right and MY PERSONAL BELIEF is COLE would destroy JSU football 3 or 4 years from now WORSE than BELL did. :nod2:

I understand your concern. That's why I prefer Comegy. He is a builder who has stayed out of trouble. But then again this would be Cole's final chance in big-time BCF and he desperately wants this job. Always has. If something falls through with Comegy, Would you rather have McKenzie than take a chance on Cole? I just don't have much faith McKenzie can get the job done.

Man that's tough for me because I'm going to alway's end up where I started...................understanding the past, WHY IS COLE EVEN BEING CONSIDERED. There have to be other REALLY GOOD candidates out of those 45 applications that came in. :look:

As far as McKenzie.................I understand why he is on the final list.
JSU grad, ex-player, still coaching in the "area". Consideration was a must for him............................BUT.....................If we go out and hire him, we may as well give Daryl and Credell a shot at building the team with more than 3 games and NO TALENT. :swink:

Tough call, but like I said........................I don't want COLE at any cost. HE WOULD WIN BIG AT JSU WITH THE RESOURCES and the number of LARGE CLASS highschools to recruit from within 20 miles of Jackson, but it would cost us big time in the end.

It would be the same old speach ....................."I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG".......................right before he bolt's to another victim ....... :goof: ....errr..............college. :look:

Would you JSU folk be interested in buying Steve Wilson's contract from TSU. He won a BC Nat. Championship. His record is very good other than the present. But it's not his fault "some say". I was told TSU just didn't have the athletes to implement his system. So I am sure with the high caliber athletes available to JSU he will be highly successful.

All offers will be considered.

Dude y'all can keep that guy. But, if you do get rid of him, give James Bell a call. I hear he's available.

We left the gate open and let one loser in, can't do it again.

Grapevine..........JSU finalyst

Comegy, Jackson & McKenzie

Culberson.....on way out.........

All signs point to this being true. For one Jackson said he couldn't work for Culberson. Comegy and Cole were given the shaft by Culberson during the search that got Bell. So all of these candidates are not Culberson fans. Plus, Culberson's contract is up in 2006. And he isn't part of the search process. So it doesn't look good for ole culby :ebrow:

If Roy's on his way out, JSU had most certainly better have a GOOD compliance director in place. There was some "stuff" going on in the programme that shouldn've occurred in the recent past.

Good luck w/ the search JState.

Don't worry about JSU...........they are headed in the right direction (those people are not playing down there).

I've said this before on here and I'll say it again: Hire Cole or don't hire him based on his merits as a head coach and nothing more.

Everyone -- and I mean EVERYONE -- knows that the things he went through at ASU were complete bull. The NCAA has had that report for two years now and in that time two different schools have hired both L.C. and Johnnie. And each time, those schools called the NCAA and asked if there was a problem or any potential problems. Each time they were informed by the NCAA that there was NOTHING that should prohibit the hiring of L.C. or Johnnie Cole.

Both Johnnie and L.C. admitted to making mistakes at TSU. But still, neither one were found guilty of major violations. The violations they were found guilty of weren't even enough for them to be fired. When ASU hired Cole, it asked for a letter from the NCAA saying Cole was cleared. The NCAA provided one. At ASU, Johnnie was cleared by the school. He WAS NOT FIRED. He was officially an assistant coach until the end of the 2003 season. L.C. could've worked out a similar deal, but it would've cost him a year's salary and he wasn't willing to do that. Trust me when I say that his hearing before the NCAA Committee on Infractions will go a lot like Billy Joe's case. They're basically the same cases with the same charges. It's all compliance problems that they pinned on Cole to fire him. Just like FAMU did with Billy Joe.

Comegy has just as many issues in his past as Cole has in his. Don't believe it? Look it up. But like Cole, the problems are shady and really play no factor in either being hired by any school.

These are two good coaches. JSU would do well to hire either. Personally, I would hire Cole. But that's just because I saw first hand the way he turned around the ASU program. I'm not talking about just wins and losses, either. When he was run out on a rail two years ago, that program, from a talent standpoint, from a fanbase standpoint, from a grade point average standpoint and from a discipline standpoint was in the best shape it has ever been in. And he did it all with little or no support from the administration.

But bottom line: Hire the guy or don't hire him based on his coaching credentials and let the other stuff go. It's just so shady that it's irrelevant.

Now I do recall that some players trashed his car and broke his windows. But, I would still give him a look.

FRIED FOODS and L.C. "I didn't do it" COLES. :emlaugh:

Yes, they did. Two players he had kicked off the team the week before for discipline problems.

Over the last five years, those are the only two players I can think of who have even had a traffic ticket. That's saying something. There aren't many I-A programs that can claim that. (Although, on a side note, there are very few big problems among the players at any SWAC schools. In this day and time, I don't know why the schools don't promote that more.)

I'd also like to point here that there is a HUGE misconception about NCAA violations on the I-AA level. Let me explain something here, most I-AA coaches, unless they're going out of their way, are not going to be hit with major violations. The reason why is simple: There's very little booster money or money in general at these schools. Nobody is paying players. How would they pay them? Hell, the coaches can barely get paid. Nobody's handing out cash to high school coaches to steer players to a I-AA school. THERE'S NO MONEY.

You see, almost all major NCAA rules violations are determined by one factor -- an illegal gain of a competitive advantage. It's tough to get a competitive advantage without money. Take Cole at ASU, for example. He was accused of practicing one player two days early and allowing six other ineligible players to practice and play. Sounds bad, right? Sure it does, until you look a little closer. If you do that, you see that the compliance guy at ASU certified all the players. Now, are you really going to screw up a man's life over that?

Really, this was the gist of what Cole was said to have done at ASU. There were other big, splashy accusations, but none of them, such as hiring strippers or stealing money, were ever mentioned in the self-report. In fact, the president later admitted that Cole's financial records at ASU were nearly spotless. After a thorough financial audit, he came up $8 short. In three years. There's not one accusation, even if they're found to be true, which trust me, is a hell of an assumption, that could be considered a major violation. ASU, like FAMU, tried to claim they were so they could fire Cole without having to pay him.

I'm all for riding collegiate sports of dirty coaches and players. But really, guys, you've got to look at the facts before you unfairly brand somebody dirty. I came into the L.C. Cole situation at ASU completely and utterly unbiased. If anything, I was like a lot of people here and figured that Cole was dirty. Then I got the facts. And it's truly sickening what has happened to him over the past three years. Go check it out some time. You'll see what I'm saying. Don't just come on here and say the guy's dirty without looking at the charges and the evidence against him. It's not right. And I suspect no one here would like to have something similar happen to them.

Ok Reporter. Can you now tell us the dirt on Comegy? I've heard that he has a few dirty spots too.

I could. But I don't think it's fair to Comegy. That stuff was way back there and he's been clean since. He's a good guy and a good coach. Hire him or don't on those merits, not what happened at Central State 12 years ago.

The only thing I question about Comegy is how great of a job he's done at Tuskegee. That's not your typical D-II football program. Take a look at that team on the sidelines sometime. They had ASU and Pine Bluff outnumbered by a large margin. You've got to wonder how that happens every year. And then you look at the other programs at Tuskegee and what's happened to them since Comegy has been AD.

I just don't know how much what he's done at Tuskegee will help him at a school like Jackson State. There are a whole different set of rules at the I-AA level.

I have heard the questions about TU's size in numbers before and there is really no secret to it. Comegy has a large number of students that tryout for the team and he does not cut anyone. I do not care what your skill level is, if you tryout, you are on the team and you can be "Rudy" for no money.
