I applaud those TnSt band members for transferring. You only go around once, so grab all the gusto you can by becoming members of the best band in the land, the South Boom of the South!

From my observation yesterday, the Boom looks to be around 240-250. The Merge suppose to be Aug. 21. I dont know if that date is comfirmed yet.
Those are the numbers i saw as well and a lot of that is mostly brass. Merge is definitely the 21st

JSU’s Sonic Boom of the South impresses popular comedian Rickey Smiley
by Jackson State University August 22, 2016

Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South received an ardent on-air “shout out” and social media boost from popular radio show host and comedian Rickey Smiley during an Aug. 22 segment of his nationally syndicated morning show. The social media staff in the Department of University Communications posted several photographs and video clips from the marching band’s annual “Thee Merge” event to the university’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

Smiley, who is also an actor, saw the video footage of the Boom’s freshmen and upperclassmen performance and was so impressed that he gave the Boom a radio mention and also embedded the video on his “Rickey Smiley Morning Show” website.

To date, the social media video has reached roughly 1 million people, due in large part to Smiley’s assistance.

Jackson State marching band to play free show before UNLV game

By BEN GOTZ
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

A day before Jackson State takes on UNLV, its marching band will take the field.

The Rebels open their schedule with Jackson State on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Tigers’ band, named the Sonic Boom of the South, will perform Aug. 31 at the Pearson Community Center in North Las Vegas, the schools announced Wednesday.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and speakers and performances and scheduled from 6-7 p.m.

UNLV also announced its first home game in 2017 and 2018 also will be against a historically black college. The opponent for either year has not been determined.

Jackson State finished 3-9 playing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference last season. The Tigers lost their first game of the season last year 70-14 to Middle Tennessee.

“To be able to bring that performance to Las Vegas is huge to not only bring in the Jackson State fans but also for the locals to see that type of performance. It’s incredible,” LVCVA senior director of communications Jeremy Handel said.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Jackson State Tigers will take on the UNLV Rebels to kick off the football season September 1 at Sam Boyd Stadium but the party will get started a day earlier thanks to the arrival of the world-famous JSU Marching Band.

The Sonic Boom of the South, cheerleading squad and popular dance squad the Prancing J-Settes will perform at a special community appearance the night before the game. The free event on August 31 will take place at the Pearson Community Center, which is located at 1625 West Carey Avenue in North Las Vegas. Doors open at 5 p.m. with speakers and performances scheduled from 6-7 p.m.

Jackson State’s visit is part of a unique partnership between the two schools and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) that Director of Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy and LVCVA Chairman Lawrence Weekly announced earlier this year.

“Our city looks forward to hosting the team, staff and fans of Jackson State and we are thrilled that the historic university’s world-famous marching band will put on a show not just at halftime but also in our community the night before the game,” said Weekly.

Not trying to start drama but how can you someone or something be called world-famous if they never been out the United States?
