Jackson State has called a press conference for Friday to introduce Rick Comegy as its new football coach, school officials said tonight.

Comegy, the head coach and athletic director at Tuskegee University, will be JSU?s 11th head coach.

Comegy?s teams have won 90 games and lost 26 in 10 seasons at Tuskegee, an NCAA Division II school in eastern Alabama.

Comegy, 52, led Tuskegee to four Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and one Black College National Championship. The Golden Tigers finished 11-1 this season, capped by a 28-26 Pioneer Bowl victory over Bowie State on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.

Jackson State hires Comegy from Tuskegee

JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State hired Tuskegee coach Rick Comegy on Wednesday to revive its sagging football program.

The school called a Friday news conference to introduce Comegy, the replacement for James Bell who was fired Oct. 31 during the Tigers' third consecutive losing season.

Contract terms were unavailable.

Comegy is being asked to rejuvenate a once-proud program which produced Hall of Famer Walter Payton, won 15 Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and regularly led Division I-AA in attendance.

He had success at Division II Tuskegee, going 90-26 in 10 seasons with six 10-win seasons. He also was the school's athletic director.

In 14 seasons as a head coach, Comegy is 108-51, and was at Central State and Cheyney before coming to Tuskegee in 1996.

Bell was 8-23 with just two home victories in two-plus seasons at Jackson State.

He was fired after the Tigers allowed 64 points in a home loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Daryl Jones, the quarterbacks coach, was interim coach for the final three games of the Tigers' 2-9 season.

Jackson State also is searching for an athletic director after Roy Culberson resigned earlier this week, effective Jan. 31, 2006. Culberson was blamed for hiring Bell and was not involved in selecting the new coach.

Damn. This is messed up. JSU why you want to fire Bell and mess up a good thing. He was 0-3 against TSU. I'm not pleased with the hire.

He was 0-3 against 4 or 5 different schools.

Could Jackson St be a whole new team next year?
We will se a difference, I can tell you that..... Other SWAC coaches better step their games up.... HE's coming in as the most experienced head coach the SWAC has right now..........

I think Pete is the most experienced coach in the SWAC if I am not mistaken and Comegy would be second based on experience as a head coach. How long was Comegy at Central and Cheyney?

I know he is younger than Pete.

You are right though, all our coaches need to be ready to step up. I can see it now. Comegy will probably promise JSU fans that he will beat Bama State and Alcorn. Just like Tressel told us Ohio State alums about Michigan when he took over.

Should be interesting

I really cant wait till SWAC Media Day next year. It should be really good this time. Well, at least for us this time.

It would be interesting in knowing what was included in his contract. The problem for JSU will be those teams that have consistantly beaten them over the last few years, who won't lay down the "throne" so easily next year. In other words, if JSU beat all the teams that beat them, then it will be a "let down". Bell, in the minds of many turned JSU into a sellar dwellar. Therefore, we can't let them win again and Losstober will continue for the Tigers of Lynch Street.

Dude, must you show ALL your hate on the Sports Board? And I'm sure no one's team on here will let us do anything.

These Bamas.... get over the fact that your run has ended. If Comegy has signed the contract then it is obvious he agreed and we met the need!
