It's better to admit you have issues in your defense (like us) rather than to be in denial about your defense (Like J-State)..Admittance is the first step to recovery... :topic:

You know I'm right...them other dudes in that secondary are just riding Cletis' coattails. Sorta like the Cardinals back when Aeneas was getting Pro Bowl invites while the rest of them clowns in the secondary were gettin toasted all the time.
Besides, that same secondary got lit up by SU last year...Your offense is anemic which means, that defense will be on the field all day...which means Cletis can't cover er'body on the field...

Shid...Cletis should be coaching defense, offense, special teams, sellin' tickets, mediating the "beef" between Gee Arrah and TP and replacing Culberson...

Valley probably has the best WR corps in the conference (esp. now that Alcorn's Nate Hughes is gone for the year)..and that was being said BEFORE the season started. But, at least Valley moved the ball on our sorry defense...care to remind me of what happened last year when J-State played against our sorry defense.

:emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh:

On what thread did you see where I even hinted that we don't have problems. :emlaugh: :emlaugh:

He!!, after the win against Texas So., my response on that thread was "Ugly ............but at this point I'll run with it." :emlaugh:

BTW: YOU CALLED YOUR DEFENSE SORRY.

Besides ............... I could flip a coin at picking a game where the opposing defense stopped our 3 yards and punt offense last year.

Umm, Einstein, did Valley play last years sorry defense this year or did they play this year's sorry defense this year??? Just axing.

AHHHHHHHHH .....................Devil's Gun.

Let me fill you in on the rules for Southern.

ANYTIME SOMEONE BEATS THEM, THAT TEAM ALL OF A SUDDEN BECOMES THE N.E. Patriots, The '70's Steelers, and the 80's and '90's 49ers and Cowboys ..............all rolled into one. :nod2:

When they got drilled by a bunch of WABBIT's last year, SDSU became the best team in the nation according to them.

BTW: We get the same news as ya'll DEVIL's. All those Mississippi State transfers ya'll got last year and this year still ain't gonna help. :goof: :goof:

I hate to tell you this Frat, Valley is going to beat JSU this year. It has nothing to do with SU. I aint comparing that win to any other game. I am just looking at Valley has a real good offense and I think folks are letting that AAMU game in HUNTSVILLE decide that they are still the same ole Valley. I also think they are a different team in Itta Bena than on the road. This is Totten's chance to beat the other Ms schools in the SWAC while they are down and I think he will this year. Again this has nothing to do with SU. It has everything to do with the timing of this game and JSU inability to score, the Bell factor, last time yall were in Itty Bitty you struggled and if you want Bell out of there, you need to hope Valley kicks a mud hole in yall. Kinda like I am hoping my Vikings start 0-4 just so this new owner will run Mike Tice no coach arse out of here. At this point a real JSU fan still roots for his team, but hopes something happens to convince Culberson that Bell has to go. JSU get too many wins this year and Bell will get an extension. LOL. Hell I want Bell out of JSU as bad as most of you. I need the ole JSU to return. After all, JSU is my second favorite school in the SWAC. :D

I knew this would bring you out Frat.

I hear what you are saying, but ............you being a JACKSON native, you know how many times and teams Valley has had that was supposed to beat us.

Only 2 succeded .....................Rice/Totten in the '80's.
And the defensive back led defense of the "NWA".

The "transfer team" ain't gonna do it.

BTW: Did you type that first line without laughing?

I hear ya on the ole JSU teams that were supposed to lose to Valley and never did except the 2 year Rice-Totten era in 83 and 84 if my years are correct. JSU beat Valley in Totten's last year(85) didn't they? Anyway JSU also never had a suspect team like they do know. Those JSU teams were still good and had good coaching, but folks just thought Valley had enough to get past yall. I can't even remember the last time anybody thought Valley could beat JSU since those Rice-Totten years until recently. I never thought Valley could beat JSU as long as you had players like Kent and company. But now that Bell has his type of players ie........Haren and company and have to go to Itta Bena to face a dangerous Valley team. I just don't have to confidence in Bell. Any other time I would say Valley has no chance to win. I can't say that this year. Valley's only problem will be containing their emotions and taking JSU for granted as a sure win. If they play within themselves and pressure Haren then it is a wrap. If they don't and let the JSU swagger develop in this game then what happened in Grambling last year might happen in Itta Bena this time. We'll see.

It's Valley man...they're still on an emotional high from the SU game and will definately overlook us. If their defense cannot stop the run and give us ball control then it's over, because Valley has a history of finding a way to lose to their Daddy!

The bottom line is that "if" Valley can't control the clock, it's gonna be a looooonnng day! The way JSU plays, forces the other team not to make too many mistakes, but also doesn't allow for us to make too many mistakes either on offense. If you've noticed, we lead the conference in turnover ratio. :lecture: If we can get a 2 touchdown lead on :saw: Valley...it's over. You can't play catch up ball against a team like JSU, especially if you're a passing team. It's gonna get real ugly if yall think Aries Nelson is gonna torch us for over 300 yards of offense. I just don't see it happening........

The minute you hear Timmons name it's gonna be because Cletis stepped in front of an intended pass for him! :emlaugh: Believe it or not, but JSU has the best secondary in the SWAC. ;) Prove me wrong?

We been the homecoming opponent ONCE since the mid 80's. Correct me, if I'm wrong. And that was last year at PB. Just last year alone, who was homecoming opponent more, Annie Mae or J-State??? We are NOBODY's homecoming opponent this year. What about Annie Mae???

all what Mississippi St. transfers???? Let the excuses begin. an offensive lineman and quarterback who Totten coached in high school that was supposed to come to valley anyway.

Valley is going to lose because they are one dimensional. You are not going to just pass all over JSU....and as far as that crap that Journalist said. ....Dancy and Levy probably do their jobs better than Cletis...Cletis just pulls down the ints.

Bell said Jackson State could exceed those expectations because the Tigers are in their third year of learning his intricate offensive and defensive schemes. Nine starters on each side of the ball return from last year.
TP, A freshman in the system would be a sjunior now. Shouldn't they be kicking butt? If they and the seniors are not good at this system this year, then it takes more than a four year college career to master the system. Then the system is no good in college ranks.

"Personnel dictates a lot of things, and we've recruited those (key) guys," Bell said. "You've got to give yourself time to recruit the type of kids for your philosophy. We feel like we've got those type of kids."
So, Bell feels this is the year? He has years to recruit, train and use the system. Soon the persons he recruited and trained will have graduated. Are you following me or am I missing a key point? Seriouly.

Once-proud Tigers find motivation in low expectations

JOEDY McCREARY

Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. - Once-proud Jackson State has reached a new low: for the first time, the Tigers were picked to finish last in the Southwestern Athletic Conference East.

If that public disrespect fires up the Tigers, coach James Bell is OK with it.

"All of them talk about it," Bell said. "They feel very motivated by that, and that's what they're going to be doing. We feel real comfortable with that."

In recent years, there's been little reason for comfort on the Jackson State campus. The once-dominant program, which has won 15 SWAC titles and produced NFL great Walter Payton, is in the midst of a free-fall. The Tigers are looking for their first winning season since 2002.

Bell said Jackson State could exceed those expectations because the Tigers are in their third year of learning his intricate offensive and defensive schemes. Nine starters on each side of the ball return from last year.

"Personnel dictates a lot of things, and we've recruited those (key) guys," Bell said. "You've got to give yourself time to recruit the type of kids for your philosophy. We feel like we've got those type of kids."

The Tigers started slow last season, losing five of six to open the season before rebounding for a 4-7 record and a fourth-place finish in the East, ahead of only Mississippi Valley State. The Tigers lost three games by a combined 11 points.

It was markedly better than the 2-10 finish in Bell's first season in 2003.

The key to Jackson State's offense this season probably will be running back David Kennebrew, who rushed for 610 yards and seven touchdowns last season and will be counted upon as a pass-receiving threat out of the backfield as the Tigers attempt to mix it up offensively.

Last year, Jackson State rushed more than 60 percent of the time and was near the bottom of the league in pass attempts - an anomaly in the wide-open SWAC, where the passing game is emphasized.

TP is right about Dancy and Levy. They are good at playing the pass and they tackle well. Cletis misses tackles a lot. He is just so talented people are not watching his technique which still needs work. I picked Valley to win but it would not surprise me to see JSU pull off the victory. Valley has a way of giving the game away to Jackson State. Heck, they should have beat us last year. They had the game won until they started turning the ball over. They played great for three quarters and midway in the fourth they remembered they weren't supposed to beat JSU. They have won only five games in the entire series and Totten has yet to beat JSU as a coach. The one thing that will help Valley this year is the transfers. They have not grown up around the series and they don't know about JSU's history. To them JSU is just another team and that may help them win.

As a matter of fact, it's the tackles Cletis missed that cost us the games against TN State and Hampton! :redhot: In the Hampton game, he tried to arm tackle the running back up high and ended up getting a whiff of air. :shame: As for the TN State game, he tried the same arm tackle but this time he attempted to pull the guy's shoulder pads and ended up letting him rumble for 43 yards down the sideline! A pass that was thrown in the flat for only 2 damn yards ended up being the touchdown to put them back in the game! I'm still mad as hell about that one! :shame:

As for the Valley game, I think Aries is going to get totally confused with the Cover 2 package that Jackson State uses. The scheme Bell implemented attempts to decrease the chances of big pass plays. He allows the CB's to play 10 yards off and take gambles---this especially bodes well for Cletis since he has great instincts, hands, and speed! This guy may end up with 10 or more int's before the season is over with!

As for the rest of the players, I don't think I have to do any explaining. Yall already know how good Vince Dancy is! That J-State secondary is a beast I tell ya....... :nod2:

Yes, we are following you and you are missing a big point. Bell does not recruit props. With minor exceptions, no freshmen start for Bell. You also have to recall that Bell's first recruiting class only had 8 people because Hughes had given all the scholarships away and the only one of that 8 to play as a freshman (as I recall) was Kennebrew...that makes him the ONLY high school recruit that Bell has that is a Junior. Therefore, most of Bell's recruits are redshirt sopohmores and redshirt freshmen. The players he recuited this year are not playing because they are being redshirted. The only point that you have (but you missed) is that Bell had to recruit some JUCO's to make up for the poor recruiting that Hughes did.

But also on the other hand...our problem is not the players. We probably have better player across the board now than we have had in years at JSU. It's not even the system. Bell has the right idea...if fact, Bell is doing what JSU fans were begging for during the Hughes era. He just has one critical flaw that has cost us games.

Ok this should be interesting - if its not the players (as you say you probably have better players across the board now that you have had in years at JSU) and its not the system - then just what in tha hell is it?

I am waiting for the answer to that one too.

:what:

We will beat Valley. It is what it is.

The system does work. I've always agreed with Bell's basic philosophy. His problems have been micro-management on Saturday and bad late-game decision-making. But the philosophy is sound. Emphasis on running the ball, maintaining good field position, and playing solid defense has ALWAYS worked on EVERY level of football. Eddie Robinson knew this. W.C. Gordon knew this. Marino Casem knew this. It's nothing new.

All we needed was some offensive continuity. I think we have that now.

Ya'll do realize that a modest 3-game winning streak would put JSU firmly in the SWAC East driver's seat, right? We are a running team, and our next 2 opponents are teams that have notable issues stopping the run....
