I see your point and I can only speculate what TP meant when he said what he said.

From what I remember, TP's platform has always been that recruiting and player development took a major step back under Hughes. He's always maintained that a difference would be seen once Bell's players hit the field. Well, this is the first year that the bulk of his players are seeing action. Like he said, there are only of handful of (true) juniors on the team. The fact that a team comprised mostly of JUCO transfers, sophmores, and freshmen is already showing signs of being better than previous junior and senior-laden squads is a strong indicator that his belief was a valid belief.

He always believed (as well as I) that the neglect the program received under Hughes was our biggest obstacle to overcome. Gameday problems can be solved with a stroke of the pen. It takes real time and effort to overcome off-the-field troubles.

 Exactly!

Jackson State has had talented players since the 1970s. Talent isn't the issue here. Bell is. The reason why Jackson State stays in the game against almost every team is because of talent and Bell isn't bad at putting together a defensive game plan. His problem is offense. That means teams are not going to score 40 and 50 points on us, so games are going to be close. But in the end, the offensive continues to sputter and the other team eventually pulls off the win. That's why no matter if it is mighty Hampton or lowly Texas Southern, Jackson State will be in the game. Valley will not be able to throw all over JSU. If that's their plan they will lose. Valley needs to mix it up on offense and play a 4-3 on defense with the linebackers close to the line to stop the run. If they do, the Delta Devils will win. That is the easy formula for beating JSU.

Dude, you all wouldnt have even been in the game at the start of the second half against Hampton. Trust, I want to see your face here come next week. Dont be like those other Delta Dirt-dobblers and disappear, cause we will turn your private forum into newbie smack forum (thanks Cat daddy).

nigra please.............You don't even believe that crap you wrote. I BEEN on here repping MVSU win or lose, so why would anything change after this game??????

I guess Valley turned the ball over about 5 times in that vacuum again. That damn vacuum will get you every time. One moment you're running with the ball; the next you're mysteriously laying it on the ground. Go figure.

Tigers take advantage of Devils' generosity

By Mark Alexander

ITTA BENA ? Late in the first quarter, Mississippi Valley State running back Walter Burnette broke a tackle near the Jackson State 3-yard line and appeared well on his way into the end zone for a touchdown.

Just as he was about to cross the goal line, though, the JSU defender draped on his back stripped the ball loose and the Tigers recovered.

It was a precursor of things to come on a windy, overcast Saturday here in the Delta.

Valley kept turning the ball over and JSU kept capitalizing. The Tigers turned five Delta Devils' turnovers into 23 points and cruised to a 33-14 victory before an announced crowd of 9,975 at Rice-Totten Stadium.

"How many turnovers did we have? Five? Six?," Valley quarterback Aries Nelson said. "That was the difference. Our miscues killed us. I don't care who you are, even the New England Patriots, if you turn the ball over the way we did today, you're going to lose."

JSU's defense came up with four fumbles and one interception, continually setting up the offense. Linebacker E.J. Hampton intercepted a tipped Nelson pass and returned the ball to the Valley 11-yard line early in the second quarter, setting the table for Curtis Hayes' 3-yard touchdown run.

Saturday was Valley's ENTIRE SEASON rolled into one game.

They could go undefeated the rest of the year, but they will still be depressed and unheard from for the rest of football season because they lost to JSU AGAIN , :goof: , on a day they REALLY BELIEVED THEY WERE GOING TO WIN :look: .

Sike! Why hold on to that lost when we still have 2 months of football left. We still have to finish above JSU! That would be more than a great honor.

Yeah, well too bad it wasnt us. Hey, but good luck at beating everyone else.

I hate to tell you this Frat, Valley is going to beat JSU this year.
Valley has a real good offense
I also think they are a different team in Itta Bena than on the road.
It has everything to do with the timing of this game and JSU inability to score,
you need to hope Valley kicks a mud hole in yall.
Could ONE person be more wrong? DAYUM

JR said:
IHaren and company and have to go to Itta Bena to face a dangerous Valley team. I just don't have to confidence in Bell. Any other time I would say Valley has no chance to win. I can't say that this year. If they play within themselves and pressure Haren then it is a wrap. .

Could ONE person be more wrong
You would think HIS team DIDNT lose to Valley

We been the homecoming opponent ONCE since the mid 80's. Correct me, if I'm wrong. And that was last year at PB. Just last year alone, who was homecoming opponent more, Annie Mae or J-State??? We are NOBODY's homecoming opponent this year. What about Annie Mae???
Robber you are wrong....we were Texas Southerns homecoming bait in '99. Of course they did lose.

D. Haren could only throw for 300 yards on a Playstation 2, and even then he would still suck.

You say Hampton has two good running backs, so basically ur saying that ya'll knew what they were gonna do u you still lost to them?????? hmmmm....

Who's the underdog??? Ya'll the one constantly saying valley is still the same valley, and yada.....yada.....yada...........

Good thing haren didnt throw for a cabillion yards....we mighta loss

Hornets become pain in Tigers' side

By Mark Alexander
[email protected]

Jackson State used to own Alabama State ? winning 23 of 25 games in the series ? until the script was flipped under former coach L.C. Cole in 2000.

Since then, the Hornets have won five straight over the Tigers, including a 28-6 victory a year ago in Mobile.

JSU (2-2 overall, 2-0 SWAC) will attempt to put an end to that streak Saturday when it hosts Alabama State (4-1, 4-0). Kickoff is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.

"That's something we talked about in the meeting (before Monday's practice)," JSU punter Domenick Addison said. "For the seniors, this is our last shot to beat them."

In last year's game, JSU turned in one of the worst offensive performances in the program's history. The Tigers, coming off a bye week, managed only 116 yards and seven first downs, two of those coming on pass interference calls against the Hornets. JSU's only touchdown came on an interception return by Cletis Gordon.

Jackson State, MVSU look to remain competitive in SWAC East

Associated Press

Alcorn State competed for Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division titles in recent seasons while Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State battled to stay out of the cellar.

The roles are reversed this year.

Now, the Tigers and Delta Devils are once again competitive in the East while the once-mighty Braves are in last place.

Both Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State are coming off idle weekends rested and ready to resume pursuit of first, while Alcorn State looks to bounce back from last week's disappointing outing.

Jackson State (2-2, 2-0) faces its toughest league test when the Tigers play host to first-place Alabama State (4-1, 4-0), last year's SWAC champion.

Meanwhile, the Delta Devils visit Grambling, while Alcorn State is home against Prairie View A&M.

If Jackson State is going to unseat the two-time defending East champion Hornets, it'll have to do it with defense.

The Tigers lead Division I-AA in turnover margin at plus-9 and are tops in the SWAC against the pass, but Alabama State has the league's best total offense and throws for more than 300 yards per game.

Mississippi Valley State (2-2, 2-2) and its high-powered offense will be tested by a Grambling (2-1, 2-0), which has won its SWAC games by a combined 94-7 and has helped the Tigers reach first place in the West.

The quarterbacks rank 1-2 in total offense, with Grambling's Bruce Eugene averaging 363 yards and Valley's Aries Nelson second with a 338-yard average.

JSU looks for 3-0 start in SWAC

By JAMES JONES

[email protected]

Few expected Jackson State to challenge for a spot in the SWAC Championship Game this season.

Heading into the mid-season break, the surprising Tigers (2-2, 2-0 SWAC) currently hold second place in the Eastern Division.

Jackson State can take over first place with a win over Alabama State (4-1, 4-0) tonight at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Hornets are the defending SWAC champions, and have beaten Jackson State five straight times.

Cornerback Cletis Gordon, who is a top NFL prospect, and quarterback Steve Haren have played key roles for Jackson State, which got off to a 0-2 start and is coming off an open date.

The Tigers' fast start in the SWAC comes as no surprise to Coach James Bell, whose job is on the line. Bell is in the final season of a three-year contract.

"We expected to be 2-0 in the SWAC, but you still have to go out and play the game," Bell said. "A good start is always a confidence builder. Alabama State has a good team. We look forward to the game. We used the off week to heal injuries."

Half a statement not enough for Tigers, Bell

By Rusty Hampton

Jackson State played a great football game Saturday night against the best team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

For one half.

Unfortunately for the Tigers and coach James Bell, they couldn't keep it up, and Alabama State rolled to a 44-23 victory at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

This was a statement game for JSU.

The Tigers opened with two non-conference losses but came into this one a surprising 2-0 in the SWAC. ASU was 4-0 in th SWAC, blitzing those teams 151-63.

JSU football has been in a funk since Bell arrived three years ago, but this was a chance for the Tigers and their beleaguered coach to show their fans and the SWAC that change is on the horizon.

And they did it.

For one half.

Then the best team in the league, with perhaps the best offensive trio in Division I-AA, just wore the Tigers out. Ran over 'em, to the tune of 618 yards.

One bright spot: JSU didn't quit. After Alabama State dominated the third quarter, the Tigers put together an 70-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter.

Whatever happened to former JSU quarterback Robert Kent?

He signed as a free agent with the Tennessee Titans after his senior year and was released. Coach Jeff Fisher is quoted as saying Kent was improving but he was too far behind to make the roster. Then he tried to make it in the CFL with Montreal this year, but was cut. There was limited roster space there. I don't know if he will try it again. I credit Bell for hurting the kid's career. He was projected as a mid to late round draft pick before Bell arrived and dropped to being undrafted after Bell decided to run the ball all the time. Scouts came to see him the first game and saw him handing the ball off 80 percent of the time and throwing 5-yard curls and they stopped coming. If he was drafted a team would have sat him on the bench and let him learn how to read defenses but they aren't going to do that with an undrafted free agent. He was raw but talented and confident. After Bell, he was raw and it seemed his confidence was a bit shaken. It's just a crying shame because he could have been an NFL QB. :shame: :shame: I wish him well.

Thanks a lot. I was wondering what happened to Robert. The young man had a lot of talent. It was like his career plummeted when Bell arrived.
