elementary school shooting

I had a teacher a few months ago tell me that idea of stopping violence is a misguided one because man by nature is violent. We could ban all the guns in the world, and folk who want to kill will kill.

What's the difference between a cat who shoots up a school as opposed to a dude who does a drive by shooting? We never talk about gang members having mental health issues when they kill senselessly.

It is their way of labeling some folks criminals and some folks mentally insane, but they are all mentally insane criminals.

Thanks Morgan Freeman for basically saying for everyone to "move the fvck on." Maybe some will now begin the process of comprehension since you are well known and are somewhat revered in this society. I just told someone just this morning that the most hunted species in america are young black males. They're hunted FIRST to run/hit/tackle, jump and dunk a basketball, for criminal indictment when an illegal act occurs, to stick in special ed when available, and for murder when one looks the disproportionate murder rate for black males. I haven't seen a lot of that dialogue lately regarding the "hunt," unless it's strictly from those of us who are... black males.

 That elementary school shooting is a foregone conclusion, IMHO. Chickens returning home to roost. Inasmuch as those folx tried to avoid violence, one of their precious own returns violence to their front doorstep.

I do....hell I believe my fraternity needs mental health treatment to stop hazing....:shame: Man everybody needs help....

That's true.

But we don't label certain acts as being caused by some mental deficiency.

A cat shoots up a school or mall and we want to talk about his possible mental health issues. But when a football coach rapes boys for God knows how many years, we don't want to have the dialogue about the state of mental health in America. It's "throw 'em in jail forever" or kill them.

We are not consistent with it.

Exactly! You can't even own a gun in DC yet their murder rate is through the roof. Criminals simply do not follow the rules. This latest idiot broke at least 10 gun laws before he even stepped foot on those school grounds. BTW, you mentioned Luke Woodham earlier....a lot of people want to leave out the fact that he was stopped by a teacher with a gun. The teacher would park his car outside the gun free zone and walk to school every day so he didn't violate the law. When Luke started shooting at the school, he ran to his car and got his gun and came back in time to stop Luke Woodham who was re-loading. Upon seeing a gun pointed at him, Luke Woodham surrendered like the coward he is. Oh yeah, the police arrived about 5 minutes later.

A weapons ban, or magazine ban or whatever some want to implement will not work. There are millions of firearms, and hi cap mags for pistols and rifles out there now, they won't magically disappear.

BTW, making something illegal won't stop criminals from getting it i.e. DRUGS!!

I did not know that about the school teacher. The teacher should have put one in his freaking skull and saved the MS tax payers money. My sister works at Whitfield and was working on the floor where that coward was housed. She said that faggot cried every damn day.

Some folks do label pedophiles as people with Mental Health issues that can't be cured. Even with Sandusky, folks were saying how he was socially awkward and something always seemed off with him, but nobody said anything nor complain.

Reagan was completely heartless when he decided to make drastic cuts to mental health programs. He didn't realize that people in this country don't live in a bubble. He was totally unaware that those cuts would affect everyone, including mentally sane people.

I'm still trying to figure out why Reagan name is dragged into this. Dude hasn't been President in a minute. Hell he's been dead for a minute. Mental Health is probably something that should be handled at the State level and not Federal.

Regan cut a bunch of social programs to this day that are having affects in our society. Programs once in place to help mental issues got cut and never regained steam to come back because everything was and still is labeled social to help the poor by politicians. That is where he is bringing Regan in. Kind of like the trickle down economics that caught up with us in the economy.

Because Reagan Babies knows it is going to take lots of tax dollars to fix what their so-called heroic leader screwed up. Also, to add to what you previously typed, mentally insane dudes didn't start doing drive-by shootings until after the Reagan Administration deliberately ignored Central and South American Drug Cartels shipping drugs into the hood. I'm sure the Cartels looked for the craziest/mentally insane mofos to get their drugs out on the streets in the hood.

And another thing about some suggesting banning all guns in reaction to this latest school shooting.

Remember the whole "War on Drugs" initiative? How about our Cowboy up response following 9/11? Lots of cats got locked up for a long time, even were sentenced to life after being busted for marijuana due to the crackdown on drugs.

We've been fighting over in Middle East for more than a decade since 9/11, wasting billions of dollars in the process. Not to mention the countless deaths of soldiers and innocent people either in or near war zones.

So, we have to take a step back and examine the possible consequences of any actions as it relates to guns.

Either you are too young to remember or you do not know the history of American politics. I had family members that worked at the mental health hospitals in Pineville, Louisiana. Reagan drastically cut the nation's mental health budget by so much that hospitals had to close their doors, which put a lot of mentally ill individuals out on the street to coup for themselves. When I lived in Los Angeles in the late 80's to mid 90's, folks would always tell me that Los Angeles homeless population increased exponentially after Reagan decided to cut funding for mental health institutions.

Styles only sees what is taking place now. He doesn't see the cause and the effect of the PAST politics by Reagan. There are way too many NOW people in this society.

Maybe you should explain to him which President introduced to this country the Trickle Down Theory of Economics. I'm sure he is a little lost on that too. Even GW's dad called it Voodoo Ecomonics.

I don't consider myself an expert, but I do know a little about American politics. Every President picks and chooses what he cuts and funds. Just like some of you blame Reagan for the Mental Health problems in this country, some folks blame Clinton for cutting the DoD budget and hurting the military. To be honest, Reagan really didn't cut any domestic funding. He just redirected the money to other domestic programs that he supports. He redirected most of that funding to the DoD and War on Drugs.

I understand the cause and effect of past legislation, but I also understand that those in power change every 2-4-8 years. I have to give it to the GOP. They have their pet projects and programs and when they are in power they find ways to push money to them. If Dems are really the champion for social and domestic spending then fund those programs, including Mental Health programs.

Like Cee said, it's going to take a lot of money and time to restore what was destroyed. It always takes a lot longer to build something than to destroy it, such as, it took Engineers and Construction crews years to build the Twin Towers, but it only took terrorist one (1) day to destroy them. Therefore, we just need to be prepared to ENDURE the trying times placed upon us by the previous Republican Administrations.

That war on drugs you are speaking of consisted of disproportionally locking up Brothers for using certain drugs (crack cocaine). Not much was done to stop the inflow of drugs by others into this country.

Just because it will cost A LOT OF MONEY, doesn't mean you continue to ignore the problem(s). The Dems would have held the Presidency 16 years (Clinton 8/Obama 8) since Reagan. If the Dems were really serious about addressing the Mental Health issues in this country than they would have found ways to redirect funding to the cause. Hell even GWB found a way to get a Medicare Prescription Drug bill passed and his party is anti-medicare. Obama could have drastically increased Mental Health spending in both the Stimulus and Health Care bills. Same thing with Clinton when he was in office. Their is blame to be placed on everyone.

Now that we can agree on. But let's not fool ourselves, those crack dealing and crack smoking BROTHERS are not innocent by no stretch of the imagination.

Sure there's blame to go around in both parties, but why continue to shield those crazy politicians that are fighting to maintain Reaganomics?

Glad you mentioned the mental health thing.

I haven't verified this statement or know if it has already been posted...but here is Morgan Freeman allegedly had to say about the incident......

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

According to Snopes, he didn't say it. http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/newtown.asp

My gun control proposal is that there needs to be better background checks, including checks done at gun shows. The checks need to include whether the person has a history of mental illness, and whether anyone in that person's household has a history of mental illness.
