elementary school shooting

So the kids being killed over in other areas is something we shouldn't report or shine light on over here but we are suppose to go into an uproar when it happens here

ok gotcha folk...

That's not what I'm saying. The major networks always report on stuff like this. Cat walks on a bus strapped with a bomb and blows it up. Two years ago, a cat blew up an airport. Then there was that mass shooting over in Europe where a bunch of kids got killed. All that got covered.

But the American public doesn't feel connected to those incidents because they happened thousands of miles away in some foreign country. Hell, nobody started a thread about the mass shooting that happened in an Oregon mall three days ago.

This plays into the psyche of folk because it involved kids and happened here.

But at the end of the day, when stuff like this happens we get angry, grieve, solicit our talking points and then move on just as quick. That's what we do, bro.

The thing with Americans is we act like this stuff just started happening or is rare. We have a very sheltered view of the world.

And short term memory loss too, not long term. :read:

I trip from time to time on this 'new' mixture of american culture... how some have conveniently forgotten Mr Crow and Mr Segregation and Mr MyMommaWasNotGoodEnoughToDrinkFromYourWaterFountain and Mr YouTreatedMyDaddyBad, amongst numerous others. :|

I'm still salty for the state of texas executing another one of my male cousins a few months back. Kinfolk was severely mentally ill and was spiraling while no one took responsibility to step forward and have him committed so he could've received some help. By the time some of us tried to reach him, it was too late - I'd just returned to texas from the out of state junk (I promised his mother I would never leave him alone when I was 13. She made me promise her @ his older brother's funeral - we were the same age). :(

There was a mall shooting in Oregon three days ago and I didn't see anyone mention that on Facebook or on the boards.

As expressed in this thread, one thing we all can definitely say, people are frustrated and angry over senseless killings.

And yet we continue to cut mental health budgets and close facilities. Too many guns in the hands of very disturbed individuals. That's our society today and the carnage will continue. Malls, movie theaters, schools, churches, political rallies and military bases have all experienced tragic shootings. Could sporting events be next? GOD help us.

Cuts in the country's mental health budget started during the time when Reagan was the President. There were a lot of people then that said Reagan was the devil when he got elected. They even went as far as saying his name represented the biblical number 666 as described in Revelation 13:17-18. Reagan's full name is Ronald Wilson Reagan with his first, middle, and last names each having exactly six (6) alphabetical letters. And like someone said previously, demonic forces are alive and working. IMHO, I think Reagan was the President that opened Pandora's Box of demonic forces when he decided to initiate plans to defund programs like mental health and education, which is one of the main reasons why the Republican Party has a bunch of bat crap crazy politicians without a caring soul for their fellow American.

More guns = more homicides. I know gun advocates do not agree with this assessment but those are the facts.

smh...

Radios are broadcasting this..but yet when the summer killings were going on...ngas just shrugg it off and the news zoom on past to sports...you had so called doctors blaming things on single household parents instead of reporting the issue and trying to fix the solution...sad country we live in...shed light on "everything"

ABC is having a special and I"m like "really"...what about have a special on the killing over there in Congo..the women over there being raped and kids being killed..or have a special on the black kid that got killed for playin his rap music too loud per say..where were the white folks crying over that.. smh...

again prayers out to the kids that lost their lives..could have been some I knew and it could have happened here but Malcolm X hit home with what he stated..about the roaster per say..I don't praise all what he said but c'mon if this doesn't open folks eyes I don't know what will

Again I'm sorry for the kids...but this makes me think about Hurricane Katrina when folks sat at home..whites made jokes when folks were so call stealing to feed their families..the f'ing government didn't show up until 3 days later and shat..and then they called us refugees and shit...I mean look at how we were treated when our families had to leave our homes.."Most" didn't want us in they areas..some took us in and cared..but look at how things were when that shat went down

Those were just babies. I feel sorry for those families. I will continue to pray for these folks families just as I did for you and folks like your family who suffered during Katrina. Never doubt or don't believe there were many of us saddened, crying and praying for the well being of folks during Katrina my friend. Never let the devil trick you or fool you into thinking God's people were not praying for your strength or well being. The devil is busy man and he is always trying to break our spirit. Weeping may endure in the night, but joy does come in the morning. I will leave by telling you this bighead, I have always felt compassion for folks when they lose their mothers. You know the typical line we as human beings say "I feel your pain or I feel your grief", but believe me, you really never feel how that person feels into it is your mother, child, brother/sister or love one in that coffin being laid to rest and dirt thrown on top of them. I have seen many people killed, been to funerals of love ones, been around crazy stuff, but it was not until I had to bury my own mother, sitting their watching her die and take her last breath until I understood death is really real bruh.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/15/us/connecticut-school-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

"Police say Lanza, who grew up in the tight-knit community of 27,000, killed his mother at her Newtown residence before going to the school where he primarily targeted two classrooms"

"With the death toll at 26, the massacre in Newtown is the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech mass shooting that left 32 dead."

"Three weapons were recovered from the school: a semi-automatic .223 caliber rifle made by Bushmaster found in a car in the school parking lot, and two pistols made by Glock and a Sig Sauer found with Lanza's body, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said, on condition of anonymity."

According to NBC the pistols were 9MM.

"The weapons were legally purchased by Lanza's mother, said the official, who was not authorized to release details of the case to the media.

After killing his mother, investigators believe Lanza took her guns and made his way to the elementary school. There, dressed in black fatigues and a military vest, according to a law enforcement official, Lanza reportedly targeted two classrooms of kindergartners and first-graders.

How he got into the school remains a question as the doors were locked. At about 9:30 a.m., as announcements were read over the loudspeaker to the nearly 700 students, the first shots reportedly rang out.
"

The suspect's brother was mistakenly identified as the shooter.

Anyone know why we have warnings on cigarette packages about the harm they can cause but not on guns?

:) Very, very astute Bighead. :)

For me, I'm sick and tired of turning on the tv and hearing about that shit that happened upstate. Why? Because I-DO-NOT-IDENTIFY w/ those people, at all. As such, some of those who saw/read about the highly publicized (negatives) Katrina debacle w/ mainly poorer people of color didn't identify and their underlying mentalities allowed them to tease, make jokes, not help either monetarily-physically-or simpler still to say a single prayer for those in need, harken to grow weary of listening/reading about it every single hour of every single day, ... while so many people of color lost their lives, yet alone their family livlihoods/dwellings, were forcibly labeled as "refugees" w/in their OWN country :smh:, et al.

From what I can tell, most can be categorized into one of a few buckets of people. Either you're sincerely objective and compassionate for mankind regardless of ethnicity or you're one to identify w/ your own. This country was predicated and has maintained the selfish to each his/her own paradigm since its illegal creation when the pilgrims enterted and began to overtake the lands. For me, I'm not one of mazza's descendants who was trained to hurt when mazza hurt and say "is we hurt boss?" "is we tired boss?" "is we not feeling good, boss?" when that sorry SOB has something negative about him/her. Fortunately, there are too numerous blacks who were and seemingly never defeated that negative part of their dna so they continue to identify w/ "him," and even his lil' precious anglo descendants lol. :emlaugh: Those are the ones I stay waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay away from and thank god almighty we as a people of color ARE NOT and WILL NEVER EVER be monolithic again in this life. I see zero differences between them, those black people, and the kkk for their mentalities are so similar, imho. So to those people of color I say continue to hold hands w/ them and sing kum-bah-yah while offering up emotional support, to them. That's the only time most of them want you touching on them or even near them, when something negative about THEM occurs. They'll return some to their historical and proper place of being yet another 'ni44a in the good ol' usofa' in a few months when the shock-value of the negative occurrence wears off. :D

More guns = more homicides. I know gun advocates do not agree with this assessment but those are the facts.

Most homicides are in areas where they are anti-gun laws. So your logic doesn't make sense and your facts are wrong. And yes I'm a pro-gun and pro-self defense advocate.

The thing with Americans is we act like this stuff just started happening or is rare. We have a very sheltered view of the world.

Do you remember Luke Woodham from Pearl, MS? He pretty much started the modern day mass shooting at schools in the United States.

woodham.jpg

The Pearl High School shooting was a school shooting that took place on October 1, 1997 at Pearl High School in Pearl, Mississippi. The gunman, 16-year-old Luke Woodham (born February 5, 1981), killed two students and injured seven others at his high school. Before the shooting at Pearl High School began, Woodham stabbed and bludgeoned his mother to death in his home.

Please explain. The shootings do occur at schools, which are federal gun-free zones, but gun control should begin way before that.

Yes, but school shootings do not occur everyday. Mofos are getting shot and killed in D.C. and Chicago every damn day. Both have anti-gun laws and are ranked in the top in homicides every year.

For more than two decades, Chicago had a gun ban in the city. Only recently have residents be allowed to legally own guns under strict guidelines.

Exactly! You can't even own a gun in DC yet their murder rate is through the roof. Criminals simply do not follow the rules. This latest idiot broke at least 10 gun laws before he even stepped foot on those school grounds. BTW, you mentioned Luke Woodham earlier....a lot of people want to leave out the fact that he was stopped by a teacher with a gun. The teacher would park his car outside the gun free zone and walk to school every day so he didn't violate the law. When Luke started shooting at the school, he ran to his car and got his gun and came back in time to stop Luke Woodham who was re-loading. Upon seeing a gun pointed at him, Luke Woodham surrendered like the coward he is. Oh yeah, the police arrived about 5 minutes later.

A weapons ban, or magazine ban or whatever some want to implement will not work. There are millions of firearms, and hi cap mags for pistols and rifles out there now, they won't magically disappear.

BTW, making something illegal won't stop criminals from getting it i.e. DRUGS!!

People have some mental health issues in this world. This is a sad situation.

Glad you mentioned the mental health thing.

I haven't verified this statement or know if it has already been posted...but here is Morgan Freeman allegedly had to say about the incident......

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

People have some mental health issues in this world. This is a sad situation.

Reagan was completely heartless when he decided to make drastic cuts to mental health programs. He didn't realize that people in this country don't live in a bubble. He was totally unaware that those cuts would affect everyone, including mentally sane people.

People take mental treatment for granted. I speak from personal experience that having a therapist works. Yet, folks want to say you are crazy for seeking out help in dealing with issues or concerns that you know deep down you cannot face alone.

I had a teacher a few months ago tell me that idea of stopping violence is a misguided one because man by nature is violent. We could ban all the guns in the world, and folk who want to kill will kill.

What's the difference between a cat who shoots up a school as opposed to a dude who does a drive by shooting or a terrorist? We never talk about gang members having mental health issues when they kill senselessly.
