A question about tithing

The word tithe comes from the Hebrew word ma`aser {mah-as-ayr'}, which means payment of a tenth part or the Greek word apodekatoo {ap-od-ek-at-o'-o}, which mean the same thing.

I do not believe that people have a problem with the word tithe or tithing, the problem is a heart problem, which is giving up $10.00 which really does not belong to them. They use tithe or tithing as an excuse for not giving because they are selfish and does not realize that everything they have is a blessing from God.

True there are no modern days Levites as it relates to the OT type of Levites in the United States. However, the modern day ?Pastors, Preachers, Minister? are the typology of OT Levites, because of their spiritual responsibility. The Leviticus Priest was responsible for spiritual needs of Israel or they were the conduit between Israel and God. In modern day Christianity, Christ is the conduit and yes he is the High Priest. Also, comparing the responsibility of the Leviticus Priest to the modern day ?Spiritual Leader? notice one of the responsibilities of the Elders and Preachers.

?Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls , as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that [is] unprofitable for you?. Hebrews 13:17

This the similar responsibility that God charged the Leviticus Priest, they did this through annual sacrifices in the temple, today we are to present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable only to God [not the preacher] which is our service [worship]. However, God still used the minister to deliver His word just as he did the Prophets in the OT.

?How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? ? Romans 10:14

You cannot separate the OT from the NT, well depending on how you are trying the seperate the two. They go hand and hand ? they fit together like hand and glove. Why, if any one read the scriptures, you will see that Jesus and the Apostles quoted directly from the OT. I have forgotten the % but it?s close to 30% of the NT refers back to the OT. And the OT is full of NT prophecies. I believe it was 50 Prophecies that Jesus fulfilled from the OT.

Jesus believed that the OT was divinely inspired, the infallible Word of God. He said, "The Scripture cannot be broken" (John 10:35). He referred to Scripture as "the commandment of God" Mat.15:3 and as the "Word of God" Mat. 15:6. He also said that ?beyond the shadow of doubt? it was indestructible: "Until Heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the law, until all is accomplished" Mat. 5:18.

In fact Israel / Hebrews are called God's Church in the wilderness.

you have already stated that you do not care about anything that you don't want to believe in and that you are perfectly content to shut your eyes real tight and pull the covers WAY over your head and stay put in bed until the boogie people leave.

So ?why are you still taking issue with everything that you have already stated - in advance no less - that you are not going to believe what is written in plain language?

Stop torturing yourself woman - your Pastor appreciates your support of his lifestyle.

I'm sure that is worth something.

Hassan,

Some people are so grounded in situational scripture and traditions.
They are afraid of learning, and admitting they could have been wrong for years,
It is impossible to enlighten them.
Jesus would have to come and say tithing was for the Levites at the tent meetings.

Tony

I agree and there are some that are totally ignorant of God's word and bible application, exegesis as well as hermanutics.

Oh, Dr. H.

"However, the modern day ?Pastors, Preachers, Minister? are the typology of OT Levites, because of their spiritual responsibility."

Wrong

Levite: A member of an ancient caste of hereditary Jewish priests. Membership in the Levites is determined by paternal descent. The Levites have traditionally been considered the descendants of Levi, a son of Jacob. However, research has disclosed an unusual genetic signature called R1a1 on the Y chromosome in more than half of Levite males of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. (The Ashkenazi Jews, from whom most American Jews descend, are one of the two main branches of Jews.) The R1a1 signature on the Y chromosome in the Levites appears to have originated in Central Asia and is thought to have come from the Khazars, a Turkic tribe whose king converted to Judaism in the eighth or ninth century.

Gee, I thought he already did.

Wow, Jesus died on the cross and the Pharissees still live....

now pass the collection plate!

I am in disbelief. I heard those same words about 5 years ago and I have a wonderful story to tell about that one and how God works things out.

I don't believe he meant anything about your mother or her faith. I have run across this same situation alot of times where people are only following what they do because thats what their parents did or they grew up in a church where those things were done. This is not saying that you are doing that. But there are tons of people that are. And momma nor the preacher can say anything for them on judgement day.

Correct!
I would never diss someone like that.

You know it & She knows it!

Truth is scary sometimes.

That is obvious.

Her accusation of an affront was a thinly veiled attempt to withdraw from a discussion that she is not ready to participate in.

It's a shame too because i have read enough of her posts to see that she certainly is smart enough to make this an even better discussion than what it already is. However, as was mentioned, old beliefs die harder with some than they do with others.

Sort of like the 13 year old that refused to believe that Santa was not real.

"Instigating?"

Please, you flatter me.

This discussion was instigated by someone asking about an antiquated and obsolete practice. All i have done is participate.

If participation is a crime... i would plead guilty but that would take away your joy in judging me.

:D
