Hell, I like Soulja Boy...I mean, I personally wouldn't run out and pick up his CD, but his stuff is fun and catchy. Shid, at least he'en locked down like Lil Boosie Bad Azz.

He has tried to be like Boosie. He has alot of songs that you haven't heard that appears on mixtapes. He has talked about busting caps into folks and being a blood. He's just smart enough to keep that off of the albums that go into stores.

I still say Luke shyt was FAR worst than some of the stuff that's out now.

When you go home-click on this link and tell me Luke is REALLY worst than what is out now.
NOT FOR WORK-

This will go down as one of the worse era's of music when historians look back at it.

Probably because how many of these folks will even be remembered?

97,
What thoughts was Pac and Dre trying to invoke on "California Love?" Even the club music back in the 90's was better quality. Listen to these songs (all essentially about nothing) and compare it with what you hear on the radio today. the thing is that rappers like Hammer, 95 South, and Luke were looked at and treated like Gimmicks. Now, I hear folks talking about great Gucci Mane is and I just shake my damn head.

Now, none of these songs were about thought provoking topics. Still, the quality was there, except for maybe "Tear the club up"

Yes lawd!!!  :jump: And I will be sure to get his CD this fall.

The BET Awards were okay, I suppose. There were a few moments I enjoyed such as the "Love Jones" moment, El Debarge's performance, and Chris Brown. PR move or not, I still thought it was touching.

Trey Songz butchered da fucc out of "Purple Rain." I already wasn't a huge fan of his, so all chances are now shot to hell.

Nikki Manaj- Where this chic come from? She looks like a Black Lady GaGa. :smh: I tried getting into her, but I'm not feeling it- like I wanna hear a female talk about another woman's cat. :xeye:

I enjoyed the Prince tribute, but I was disappointed that he did not perform. :(. Alicia did a great job- but I was a bit worried about her being on top of the piano. Janelle Monae- all I can say is if you are not familiar with her music and her style, then u won't get it.

Denise Williams......~sigh~ I hate that they even let her come out on stage. Seriously. :smh:

Overall, the BET Awards were okay. Nothing really moved me like some of the past shows. I'on know....I think my age might be finally showing. :what: :emlaugh:

From what I have been told and I thnk an issue of Vibe wrote about it
-I got 5 on it was about buying weed.

I always thought First of the Month was about getting that check (pay or welfare wise). That was the first thing that came in my mind with that song.

We won't talk abut Robby Van Winkle.:shame: A DJ got fired for playing that song 20 times in a row for an hour back in 1991.

Difference between them and today. Those guys used other words for talking about stuff.

Today's folks just tell you what they are going to do point blank in most cases.
I'm not smoking Hay, I'm smoking weed.
I don't have 5 on the pizza, I got 5 on the weed.

My point exactly, they weren't talking about isht on those tracks but they had decent lyrics and flow.

Frat, I don't think it will EVER be on the same level as the 80's and 90's....but I just don't see anything wrong with today's era having fun with it. Shid, weren't there a few artists back in the day who were considered "garbage," yet they were at the top? For example- MC Hammer. Ya'll know dayum well he couldn't rap a X-mas gift, but he entertained the hell out of us and made millions. Put on "Can't Touch This" or "Turn this mutha out" now and watch what happens.

Now that's probably how I feel about R&B. I grew up on Hip-Hop, but R&B is my first love. Watching El Debarge on the BET Awards was certainly a breath of fresh air.

I'on know....maybe I can relate a bit more with da kiddies cause I remember old folks doggin out our music, hair, and fashion back in the day and now we've become those same old folks.

Now see Hammer was smart. He put his rap on top of songs that were already bumping. These guys these days are not doing that. Plus I can understand what Hammer was saying. Hammer is ten times better than the majority of these new age rappers. He was just too commercial for his time. He got dogged for being a crossover. Now Hip Hop has crossed over and Hammer is definitely one these guys can thank for that. LOL.

I feel you on the R&B. That is my love as well as Jazz. I am more partial to the 70s and 80s R&B and I was really into the funk back then. Moving bass lines and stuff. R&B died when Hip Hop took over and started having folks singing hooks with rap on their songs. Only a few good true R&B folks still out there like Jill Scott, Maxwell, etc....

You take a cat like Tyrese who can actually sing and he knows that the music industry aint isht so he rather act so he can get paid. Or he would starve as a singer.

WHAAAT!?!?!? So you're saying you DIDN'T like Pump it Hottie? Child puh-lease!!!:lol::lol::lol:

Hell yeah!!

He has tried to be like Boosie. He has alot of songs that you haven't heard that appears on mixtapes. He has talked about busting caps into folks and being a blood. He's just smart enough to keep that off of the albums that go into stores.

Oh really? I didn't know that.....but I don't really listen to mixtapes unless it's through Snake....that's his thing.

NOT FOR WORK-

1.) I won't say Soulja Boy can rap but he is def the best at what he does.

2.) JR, I am sure that your parents thought our music sucked and check this out....this current generation is gonna think that the next generations music sucks.

3.) Back in the day, Hip-Hop/Rap was not mainstream. You only had a FEW cats who got their stuff out. So those few could take some chances and put out some thought provoking stuff while still puttin out club bangers. These current rappers don't have that luxury. There are a 1000 of them and they better keep up their radio play and sales. So like Pop said (editorialized), the motive now is to make/generate money. That is why Soulja Boy is not going anywhere and I look forward to seeing him next year at the BET Awards....

JR, that is cause you were 20 in 1975  Of course you like what you grew up on like these cats enjoy what they are growing up on. Most of this stuff is all the same from the Jackson 5 to New Edition to B2K.

...as for Tyrese...his problem is that people won't buy his music. In the 80's, he would be among the top selling black artists so the industry would have backed him. Back then, if an artist could sell 200K units, they were doing fine. Nowadays, 200K units is a failure. Our money goes to rap/hip-hop. Usher is the only R&B singer of the current generation with some stamina (he can sing and dance-- and he has actually improved with age). Tyrese can sing his azz off but he needs people to buy the music.

Tyrese needs to hook up with Roscoe nem...

Actually my parents like some of our stuff back then. You got to remember I was born in 66 and my parents were in their early 20s. So they were still young. So as a grade school and middle school kid in the 70s, I was listening to the same things they were. O'Jays, Ohio Players, Teddy Pendegrass, Jackson 5/Jacksons, Isley Brothers, Con Funk Shun, Temptations, Commodores, Earth Wind and Fire etc... My old man was buying all of that stuff. They were into some of the stuff from the 50s and 60s that they grew up on. But they evolved. My old man was into the 70s funk and even liked the Rick James and such. Now it took them a moment to like Prince. Probably when Purple Rain came out they were like he's okay. LOL.

The only music my parents and my friends parents didn't understand was in the early to mid 80s when Run DMC and company became more popular. But that was because Rap was a new genre. You got remember I was already in college when RAP exploded. Only a few folks like Curtis Blow and some others got played in the late 70s.

R&B was still being true to form in the 70s and 80s. Folks could still sing their arses off. So it was only the beginning of Rap being played mainstream that my folks were not into. But they did like SugarHill gang. LOL. What is so funny is most of the young parents now are actually behind my generation and are the worst critics of this music. I think my generation just hates on the Quality of it and that R&B has really died.

So the hate for music now to me is much greater. Because even the young cats hate their music. You didn't have us in my time hating on our era of music. We bumped our Cameo's, SOS Band, Alexander O'Neal, The Time, Prince, Michael Jackson, right along with the RUN DMC's, Whodini's, Kool Moe Dee's, LL Cool J's etc.. We definitely had a better quality. Even Pop music was better during that time. U2, Sting/Police, Duran Duran, Phil Collins, etc were on the scene. Much better than Lady GaGa.....because the original Lady Gaga was Madonna who hit the scene back then.

The original Lady Gaga was Grace Jones.

In other words you could listen to a black station and hear 60 different artist in a 24 hour period.
Now you will be LUCKY to hear 30 different artists on a black radio station in a 24 hour period. Including some who have had hits.

You take a cat like Tyrese who can actually sing and he knows that the music industry aint isht so he rather act so he can get paid.

9 year film career and only 2 black films. Been in 3 films that have made a combine $1,000,000,000
had a role made for him in Transformers 1-3
signed on to be Luke Cage in his film
A comic book
2 action figures
Why bother singing?

And someone decided to rain on Chris Brown-

http://hiphopwired.com/2010/06/29/lloyd-says-he-told-chris-brown-to-cry-during-bet-awards-performance-video/

Chris Brown's “comebackâ€￾ performance at Sunday's BET Awards shocked fans and naysayers as the R&B singer broke down into tears while paying tribute to Michael Jackson.

In an interview with Rap-Up, Lloyd says he told the controversial singer that he had “to really show his heart out to the worldâ€￾ and cry.

Didn't know those two bothered with each other.

The original Lady Gaga was Grace Jones.

Heyal naw......Grace Jones started singing AFTER Madonna was on the scene. Grace is iconic as a model but Madonna and Janet set the standard for all of these wannabe's like GaGa.

Corporate America killed Hip Hop. Assimilation of the hip hop culture by mainstream America started this downward slope in the quality of music, so that record labels could increase the quantity of music. That is why we see artist with no talent, creativity, and/or originality producing blah songs.

Maybe I am a little biased because I never liked Dance songs but I absolutely detest these songs, where artist go make up a dance in the basement with their homeboys make up a song. Yall can kill that generational gap mess, I am 25 but I have been nauseated with the state of hip hop for a while.

I agree 100%. I know people are gonna listen to what they want to, but at least when I was a child on up to a young adult, rappers and R&B/Soul artists had what's called craftmanship, creativity and a passion for what they do. There's been a complete lack of that for some time now, but I don't wanna sound too old...lol

Skyvolt and for everyone else that likes Roscoe Dash, I'm sorry, but I can't listen to a dude who sounds like he got turned out while doing time in juvenile.

Again, I say, thank God for the Trucking Industry so that I didn't have to sit through BET CoonFest '10 (Thanks, Blade).

if you didnt watch the show how do you know it was a Coonfest. what was done on the show that was a coonfest

This year's BET Awards I enjoyed. Had a lot of good performing acts and entertaining. For the ones that didnt like it yall are probably the same ones that claim yall dont watch BET but yet seems always watch something on it.

Psisnake you right Swizzbeats is a beast. the best songs out this decade were mostly produced by him. Only dummies and groupies dont know that

if you didnt watch the show how do you know it was a Coonfest. what was done on the show that was a coonfest

I followed friends posts on Facebook, not to mention knowing the history of that show. Besides...opening your show with Cadet and Eraserhead along with all of the other train-wrecks that helped set our people back a decade, furthered my knowledge.

BET (under the direction of Viacrap) is one of the many plagues in society that's aiding in our death of relevance. I call it how I see/know.

well i guess lady gagy smearing blood all over herself, eminem letting bruno fall in his lap is setting white folks years back. funny you never hear white folsk say that

i guess seeing el debarge, patti labelle, trey songs, monica and denise williams, jonelle monai, alecia keys and kanye west performed was easily ignored huh???

and even with chris brown crying yet again for the michael jackson tribute he was great for the dancing part. even tyrese was great honoring teddy p but i guess that dont mean shit. i never knew entertainment can set black people back but yet no one is doing anything to step it back up.

yall are funny. Im gone to watch the BET Awards again tonite. how far back is BET gonna set me lol

Number 1: I don't know who the Jonelle person is, but Trey Songz is overrated to some degree (he's starting to sound a little like R. Kelly), and Kanye....well, you remember, right? Those other artists aside from Alicia and Monica...legends.

Number 2: I said our people. No other race..our people. If you watched the show and enjoyed it, great! That's your preference/opinion/view. Again, I know the history of that awards show and for that matter, everything that channel has been about since Viacomm took over.

But if that's what you like, then do you. Until BET airs something on a regular basis that actually helps to uplift our people and move us forward, I won't burn my eyes trying to watch it.

How da hell did I miss this?

From what I have been told and I thnk an issue of Vibe wrote about it

For real?? I didn't know that!!! :what:

"Nucca, let's go half on a sack!!!!" :smoke: :smoke: :emlaugh:

Dayum, those were the good old dayz. :)

uhh whats wrong with Kanye?? fukk what he said about that white broad he is a genius and one of the best MCs in the game.

Since when did it become BET responsiblility to uplift black people. They are a TV station. They are in the business to entertain. White folks dont hold MTV to uplift their race. AGain what swac school do you go to? Do you give back to that school?? Do you give back to your high school, jr high, elementary?? Do you mentor, Big Brothers of America, involved the community
??? Any of that stuff. If not why dog BET when you aint doing shit to uplift our community. LOL at knowing the history of the awards. Please name the Coonfest moments so i can name you more good performance. Yall so quick to say the bad parts that you overlook the good stuff.

Dont worry ill wait for you to name the Coonfest moments
