2008 Olympics: Notes, Stories & Observations

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

Expect to see an NFL team seriously go after Bolt, HARD!

They said on the radio based off what he ran in the 100m, it would have been the equivalent of running a 3.6 40 yard dash time.

At 6'4", if he can catch too, would be a nightmare for NFL DBs and defensive coordinators.

Forget football, he can be a heck of an outfielder--only if he can hit. I really don't think the guy wants to risk getting his head knocked off playing in the NFL. Plus, being fast really does not make an NFL talent, considering Bolt has never played football.

Does it make an MLB talent, considering he's never played baseball? :xeye:

Come one man, you just contradicted yourself. Besides, much more goes into being a great baseball player than a great NFL WR.

I found this interesting.

I am just sharing it.

As Jamaicans dominate, Americans disappear

BEIJING - The Olympics are all about who shows up when it's time to show up.

In three nights of track and field at the Bird's Nest, it's clear the Americans are not showing up as many had expected. And while there is considerable action left, the U.S. performance so far has to be a concern to American officials sizing up medal counts.

It's also clear that the Jamaicans -- at least in the sprints, races Americans are used to dominating at the Olympics - are showing up big time.

.....

For the first time in Olympic history, there were no American men finalists in the high jump.

What's going on?

Is it that the U.S. Olympic Committee vowed to send a clean team to these Games?

How is it that Jamaica, an island nation of not even three million people, has produced four medal winners in the marquee Olympic sprints? On Saturday, in the men's 100m, Usain Bolt ran 9.69, a world record that looked frighteningly easy.

.....

Torri Edwards, who finished eighth, got caught in what she believed was a false start - her own.

Muna Lee, fifth, said she, too, believed the race would be called back. "I've never had a bad start like that," she said.

American officials late Sunday filed a formal protest "looking at whether Torri Edwards false-started and whether the race should have been called back," USA Track & Field spokeswoman Jill Geer said. The protest was promptly rejected.

Lauryn Williams, fourth, said, emphasizing that she was speaking with respect for her rivals in the race, said, "Definitely Jamaica has it out for the U.S. They have very strong competitors. We dominated for all the years prior to this. Everybody deserves their one chance in history to do well."

Is that it?

The Jamaicans have undergone rigorous and extensive testing here overseen by anti-doping officials. Is there, Williams was asked, any reason to suspect anything undue about the Jamaicans?

"Not at all," she said. "I have confidence in my competitors and I really look forward to competing against them and getting to the finish line before them, clean and drug free."

You are right. I don't know if he played baseball. You got me. But I find it hard to believe NFL scouts will rush to sign Bolt, considering he never played football and he probably can have a longer career running track.

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

Yes, but the Olympics come every 4 years. You rarely see male track athletes still competing in track at the age of 30+. Assuming that he is still young, he has 2 more Olympics in him where he will be a serious favorite. On the other hand he could play in the NFL and make WAY more money every year.

And you never know, he could end up being the Yao Ming of Jamaica. I'm just saying, if the Patriots ever got a hold of him and lined him opposite Randy Moss... hello championship.

Many Olympians sign contracts before and after the games are done. Tyson Gay lined up endorsement deals worth more than $2 million from companies such as McDonald?s and Sega before the Olympics started.

Walter Dix, who won a bronze medal in the 100 meter dash, signed a deal with Nike. Bolt could make a ton of dough, if he has not signed with some company already. Like I said, he does not need the NFL and the NFL will not be calling Bolt any time soon.

I was thinking the same thing J.. Bolt would be a nightmare at wide receiver if he could catch.... He for dayum sure would take a lot of pressure off of any Qb from the blitz...

Trip thing is we all KNOW we ain't see him at his best and he still broke the WR...

First, let's get this straight that there is a major difference in Tyson Gay (5'11 165 lbs) and Usain Bolt (6'4" 198 lbs), and Bolt is only 21 years old. Gay is 26.

Making money in Track & Field is all about endorsements. If you ain't got endorsements you ain't got isht. Again you fail to acknowledge there's a big difference in making millions EVERY year and every 4 years. How many endorsements do you think Tyson Gay is gonna have now that he didn't win a medal? How many contract extensions is he gonna get now?

And I must point out, this is not aout Bolt NEEDING the NFL. It's the other way around.

Fast guys who actually played football at the BCS level and won Heisman's get cut from NFL teams all the time.

What do you expect is going to happen to Bolt if he tries out for an NFL team without playing one down of organized football?

Bolt should stick to what he is great at right now. Not try to do something he is totally unfamilar with and make a complete fool of himself.

If I was an owner and a scout wanted me to sign Bolt, he would get demoted to the get back coach. Bolt would be a gimmick if anything.

The NFL is does not need a gimmick. The league is the most popular league in the country right now and Bolt is in China. He would not add anything to it.

I think he would be a gimmick.....but we cant forget the NFL is a business...and it's a World Economy......the bread would be long for any team that even attempted to experiment with this kid........

Exactly.

And that 3.6 in the 40m isn't 100% accurate Justin... You have to look at when he really broke away from the other runners, that was around about 60 or so meters..

Also take into account that the 3.6 estimate is based off what he ran in the finals (early celebrating and all) lol.

the Bears signed a world class sprinter from Florida a few years back...didn't do nothing...if that's the case, the top runners in the SWAC would don pads but rarerly they do

a track runner is running track for a reason...

People around the world don't care about American football as evidenced by the folding of NFL Europe, so the world economic gain would not be that much if any. And even if Bolt did play football, how many people around the world would tune in to watch?

The world's most popular sport is soccer. He would have a much bigger impact around the world if he played soccer than football.

You are right and that's my point.....to hit the world stage hard the NFL would need something like this kid..........how many people do you think watched the 100 meter finals......and how many people NOW know this kids name......let a team take a chance on him.....they would absolutely make some nice change.....how many jersey's do you think he would sell.......worldwide.....or endorsements he would get.....I can see the body armour commercials now....cha and ching.......

What do I expect?

Coach: "You see this ball?"
Bolt: "Yeah, what about it? What do you want coach?"
Coach: "Nothing, just run and we'll throw it for you to get"
Bolt: "Just run?"
Coach: "Just... RUN!"

BTW, isn't Devin Hester a "project" at WR. Their are a lot of successful projects around like Antonio Gates (basketball). Don't act like this doesn't happen a lot in spors or football.

They did? I dont even remember that.....and I'm sure alot of other people didnt either....but people will remember Bolt.....hell I even like his name...U. Bolt.....I see it on a jersey already.....hahaha

1. Why would it be beneficial for the NFL to hit the world stage when soccer, baseball and basketball have more of a significant impact around the world than football does?

2. Bolt, just most Olympic athletes, will be forgotten about in this country a day after the closing ceremonies.

Do we really remember who won the 100 meters at the 2004 Olympics? How come that guy has not gotten a call from an NFL team?

3. The NFL does not need Bolt. The league is making money hand over fist right now. You make it sound like Bolt is Chad Johnson something. There is no guarantee that he will even make a team.

What football skills and acumen does he have? Being fast means nothing because almost all the players in the NFL are fast. This is a really, really insane discussion.

a track runner is running track for a reason...

Hmmm lets see... 1) Can't catch. 2) Not tall.

Think I got that right. Am I right tbf?

Basically what you are saying is since that guy didn't work out, Usain Bolt won't either, right? Oh okay, I get that logic. Wonder why I didn't apply it. :retard:

1. Devin Hester has been playing football his whole life. Not only was he a KR at the U, but he played defensive back as well.

Running track and playing football are totally different things. It's not that easy--especially if you never played the game before.

2. Gates was recruited to play football by then Michigan State head coach Nick Saban during his senior year. But he decided to play basketball because Saban only wanted him to play football. Gates had some experience in the game.

Isn't the NFL Super Bowl the MOST WATCHED game around the world EVERY YEAR? The NFL pulled the plug on NFL Europe not because of a low following over seas. You are aware that Roger Goodell wants to extends the NFLs footprint in Europe? NY Giants played a game over in London last year, and the N.O. Saints have a game abroad this year as well.

Please tell me you are not serious about that last statement on his impact to soccer?
