2008 Olympics: Notes, Stories & Observations

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

Isn't the NFL Super Bowl the MOST WATCHED game around the world EVERY YEAR? The NFL pulled the plug on NFL Europe not because of a low following over seas. You are aware that Roger Goodell wants to extends the NFLs footprint in Europe? NY Giants played a game over in London last year, and the N.O. Saints have a game abroad this year as well.

Please tell me you are not serious about that last statement on his impact to soccer?

I was gonna mention that but I decided not to. The NFL is going after worldwide appeal. Why? More $$$$$$

2. Bolt, just most Olympic athletes, will be forgotten about in this country a day after the closing ceremonies.

Do we really remember who won the 100 meters at the 2004 Olympics? How come that guy has not gotten a call from an NFL team?

Again, how many of those track athletes are 6'4" and run a 9.69 100M with playful ease?

Just answer that question. Don't say anything elso other than ___(enter name here)___.

The World Cup is most watched event in the world when it is on, but you don't hear or read about soccer being all the rave in America just like you don't hear about folks oversea falling in love with football.

Heck, the men's World Cup was in Chicago in 1994, and soccer still is not popular in this country. The women's World Cup was supposed to be the icebreaker for the extreme popularity in America. Wrong.

There is not a market for the NFL internationally because unlike the NBA, MLB and the NHL, there are no football leagues in other countries. It has no staying power overseas. The Super Bowl overseas is treated like the World Cup in America.

If you read any sports section of a international newspaper, all most all the stories are about soccer. Not American football. In some countries, baseball and basketball are the most popular sport. Unless there are international leagues, the NFL will be irrevelant overseas.

How much did the LA Galaxy pay Beckham.....? They would not pay dude that much if there wasnt a market in the states.....hell the Houston team...packs Robertson stadium....thus the need for there own stadium......it boils down to money........the Mexican population in the US alone makes soccer popular......

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

How many track athletes who have broken world records in the Olympics have played in the NFL?
Jim Thorpe

JIM THORPE starred in professional football, played Major League Baseball and also had a short stint in professional basketball.

Professional Baseball: Jim Thorpe played for the New York Giants, the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Braves. Thorpe scored 91 runs, had 82 RBI and hit .252 in his 289 games played.

Professional Football: Jim Thorpe played for the Canton Bulldogs in the American Professional Football Association, which became the NFL. He played 52 NFL games.

Professional Basketball: Recently, it was learned that Jim Thorpe played pro basketball for a team call ed "Jim Thorpe and His World-Famous Indians". Although they were not an NBA team, they were professionals.

Thorpe also won Olympic Gold Medals in the Pentathlon and the Decathlon.

1. Why would it be beneficial for the NFL to hit the world stage when soccer, baseball and basketball have more of a significant impact around the world than football does?

2. Bolt, just most Olympic athletes, will be forgotten about in this country a day after the closing ceremonies.

Do we really remember who won the 100 meters at the 2004 Olympics? How come that guy has not gotten a call from an NFL team?

3. The NFL does not need Bolt. The league is making money hand over fist right now. You make it sound like Bolt is Chad Johnson something. There is no guarantee that he will even make a team.

What football skills and acumen does he have? Being fast means nothing because almost all the players in the NFL are fast. This is a really, really insane discussion.

Ain't no one is about to forget about Bolt brah.. Matter of fact if a NFL team was to pick him up, their would see a big pick up in ratings and coverage...

David Beckham's impact on soccer in this country has been about the same a the impact of Mandy Moore's singing career.

Plus, a bunch of folks in the Galaxy front office are gone due to that signing because the team is not drawing and the TV ratings are low. When have the Galaxy actually been on national television?

Becks was supposed to the man that put the sport on the map and it has not worked out too well.

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

Kendrick, are you gonna try to dodge my question? We can save a lot of time here if you just say, "yea".

Thats true.....but he is still getting paid....his jersey is still selling.....and people still come to those games.......I'm not going to argue that dude (Bolt) would or would not be a bust in the NFL....but he would make whatever team he went to some change.....business is business......if quick or long term....money is money......the owners and the league know that....

I doubt that would change their ratings.......

Remember Renaldo (skeets) Nehemiah

Nehemiah%20football.jpg

In 1982 Nehemiah worked out for several NFL teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers and ended up signing with the 49ers in a blaze of publicity and high expectations. During his three years as a wide receiver he caught 43 passes for 754 yards, a 17.5 average, and 4 touchdowns. Although he was part of the Super Bowl winning team in the 1984 season, he did not play a major role. His football career was a failure - indeed, it represents one of the most glaring mistakes ever made by 49er head coach Bill Walsh - winning Nehemiah a comparison to the track star Jimmie (Oops) Hines, who won his infamous nickname for his inability to catch the ball. Nehemiah returned to track in 1986. He managed to achieve world rankings four more times before retiring from Athletics after the 1991 season

He would only make that team some change IF he made the team and IF he made a significant impact on that team. Running in a straight line 100 meters is not the same as running over the middle while Brian Urlacher and Ray Lewis are waiting to take your head off.

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

Kendrick, are you gonna try to dodge my question? We can save a lot of time here if you just say, "yea".

Oh, you mean the question about how many 6'4 guys can run that fast? I don't know. I don't follow track. But that does not mean Bolt can play football because he runs fast. This is a classic case of the over reaction because Bolt came out of nowhere. Like I said, guys have broken the 100 meter record in the Olympics before and did not get a single call from an NFL team. Bolt will be forgotten in American almost as fast he ran the 100 meters Friday night.

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

Fiyah, Nehemiah doesn't look 6'4". He's looks more like a RB type (like most of these failed track athletes y'all keep bringing up). LOL

Kendrick, why would you send the fastest guy on earth who is 6'4" over the middle?

And did you not hear me say, "if he can catch", someone in the NFL needs to be after him?

We won't have to worry about that because Bolt will not being playing football.

kendrick I think you just hate to lose a debate.

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

How many track athletes who have broken world records in the Olympics have played in the NFL?

Bob Hayes (another link) was a gold medalist in the '64 Olympics and won a Super Bowl ring with the Cowboys. He set a world record. I think he was clock running over 27 MPH.

Willie Gault was on the 1980 track team that boycotted the Moscow Olympics and played for the Bears and Raiders. Ron Brown won gold in Los Angeles in '84 and also played for the Raiders with Gault. Like Gault Brown was drafted in '83 but also entered the '84 draft. Gault was on the 400 meter (4 X 100m) relay team that won the world championships in Helsinki in 1983 and set a world record. (I rather say 400m relay like they use to do instead of 4 X 100m relay.) He stated that he decided to sign the Bears contract while flying back to the states. Around the same time Brown decided to try for the Olympics.

Sam Graddy, who also played in Los Angeles in the NFL, won a gold medal with Brown in Los Angeles.
