2008 Olympics: Notes, Stories & Observations

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

Fiyah, Nehemiah doesn't look 6'4". He's looks more like a RB type (like most of these failed track athletes y'all keep bringing up). LOL

Kendrick, why would you send the fastest guy on earth who is 6'4" over the middle?

And did you not hear me say, "if he can catch", someone in the NFL needs to be after him?

He is 6'1" .

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

So is Justin Gatlin (tried out with Titans). Slot receiver material. Someone you would expect to send over the middle. 6'4" - you keep on the ends strictly deep threat material.

I mean are we really discussing if this can be done? How many soccer players become place kickers and punters?

I don't know how many soccer players turned kickers, but I do know that Jan Stenerud, a former soccer player, changed the way NFL place-kickers kick forever.

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

Bob Hayes (another link) was a gold medalist in the '64 Olympics and won a Super Bowl ring with the Cowboys. He set a world record. I think he was clock running over 27 MPH.

Willie Gault was on the 1980 track team that boycotted the Moscow Olympics and played for the Bears and Raiders. Ron Brown won gold in Los Angeles in '84 and also played for the Raiders with Gault. Like Gault Brown was drafted in '83 but also entered the '84 draft. Gault was on the 400 meter (4 X 100m) relay team that won the world championships in Helsinki in 1983 and set a world record. (I rather say 400m relay like they use to do instead of 4 X 100m relay.) He stated that he decided to sign the Bears contract while flying back to the states. Around the same time Brown decided to try for the Olympics.

Sam Graddy, who also played in Los Angeles in the NFL, won a gold medal with Brown in Los Angeles.

I believe it was that Willie Gault cat that couldn't catch a cold...lol

Okay...Okay.. Did anybody watch the 3000 Steplechase race...You jump over some strong looking hurdles and a hurdle/pit filled with water. I have been watching the Olympics since I was a kid and this is the fist time I saw this ish..

Shaw, that has always been a part of the Olympics. I use to watch that all the time as a kid.

Re: Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

I believe it was that Willie Gault cat that couldn't catch a fly...lol

He was not one of the best receivers in the league but had 333 catches in his career. He was one of if not the best kick returner in the nation when he was at Tennessee.

He was also an excellent hurdler. He was a state champ and third nationally in college. Unlike a lot of track stars who try football, he was a star in football and track for a long time.

I believe that Sam Graddy, a Georgia state track champ like Gault and a former running back in high school, on the other hand ran track for a couple of years at Tennessee before taking up football. He was a much bigger star in track than football while in high school.

USA Track is horrible...Jamaica Track is the real deal

if track to football was so easy...more people would do it...

alot of those guys are pretty boys and ain't gonne get hit...

Do you know how many football players that ALSO runs track?

I found this interesting.

I am just sharing it.

As Jamaicans dominate, Americans disappear
By Alan Abrahamson, NBCOlympics.com

BEIJING - The Olympics are all about who shows up when it's time to show up.

In three nights of track and field at the Bird's Nest, it's clear the Americans are not showing up as many had expected. And while there is considerable action left, the U.S. performance so far has to be a concern to American officials sizing up medal counts.

It's also clear that the Jamaicans -- at least in the sprints, races Americans are used to dominating at the Olympics - are showing up big time.

.....

For the first time in Olympic history, there were no American men finalists in the high jump.

What's going on?

Is it that the U.S. Olympic Committee vowed to send a clean team to these Games?

How is it that Jamaica, an island nation of not even three million people, has produced four medal winners in the marquee Olympic sprints? On Saturday, in the men's 100m, Usain Bolt ran 9.69, a world record that looked frighteningly easy.

.....

Torri Edwards, who finished eighth, got caught in what she believed was a false start - her own.

Muna Lee, fifth, said she, too, believed the race would be called back. "I've never had a bad start like that," she said.

American officials late Sunday filed a formal protest "looking at whether Torri Edwards false-started and whether the race should have been called back," USA Track & Field spokeswoman Jill Geer said. The protest was promptly rejected.

Lauryn Williams, fourth, said, emphasizing that she was speaking with respect for her rivals in the race, said, "Definitely Jamaica has it out for the U.S. They have very strong competitors. We dominated for all the years prior to this. Everybody deserves their one chance in history to do well."

Is that it?

The Jamaicans have undergone rigorous and extensive testing here overseen by anti-doping officials. Is there, Williams was asked, any reason to suspect anything undue about the Jamaicans?

"Not at all," she said. "I have confidence in my competitors and I really look forward to competing against them and getting to the finish line before them, clean and drug free."

This is why I have loved this girl (L. Williams) since 2004, she is humble, unassuming, and she does not make excuses for losing.

Bro, don't think they ain't going to test him, if they already haven't:lmao:

They test the top three right after every event. and randomly select two or three others. The drug tester are at the finish line and they follow the athlete until a sample is taken. that include when they take a victory lap. they have up to 30 minute to report to drug testing area but the assign person stays with them until they give a sample. and lets not forget that there is always new drugs out there that they the IOC do not know about therefore they do not have a test for. If you remember Balco that the the whole thing.

First, let's get this straight that there is a major difference in Tyson Gay (5'11 165 lbs) and Usain Bolt (6'4" 198 lbs), and Bolt is only 21 years old. Gay is 26.

Making money in Track & Field is all about endorsements. If you ain't got endorsements you ain't got isht. Again you fail to acknowledge there's a big difference in making millions EVERY year and every 4 years. How many endorsements do you think Tyson Gay is gonna have now that he didn't win a medal? How many contract extensions is he gonna get now?

And I must point out, this is not aout Bolt NEEDING the NFL. It's the other way around.

Wrong making money in track and field is just not in endorsements. Tyson Gay can still get $50,000 or more to run (one) 100 meters race per meet after the olympics. and there are about 8 meets left in the season. and that's every year not just during olympic years. I was a full time track athlete (no job and living on my own) during my time without a single endorment a year before the olympics and a few years after. and I would make around $60,000 a year. not including the indoor season.

And that 3.6 in the 40m isn't 100% accurate Justin... You have to look at when he really broke away from the other runners, that was around about 60 or so meters..

a 3.6 in track is different from a 3.6 in football. The factors are the surfaces, and the shoes. Football player don't use spikes when being timed they run in flats. while Bolt would be fast if running on grass or turf it would not be 3.6. the year I made the olympic time I was timed on turf in flats (tennis shoe) by a NFL recuriter and I ran a 4.5 in a 40 meters. on the track it was a 4.2.

USA Track is horrible...Jamaica Track is the real deal

You think :smh::confused: Jamaica Track is undetected.

US Men's 400 meter hurdlers sweep the field!
Jamaica finished 4th and 7th

I just heard a Bears fan suggest the team sign Bolt, and the sports-talk radio host said "it would be a really bad idea" because he is not sure how Bolt would take being hit.

I agree.. There a few unknown factors.. "Can he take a lick" and most importantly... "can he CATCH!!"....lol

But with dude height and speed I don't think it is far fetch to try him out with a team that may really NEED a wide receiver...

If he can catch, I don't think being hit should be a big problem, unless he don't have the heart for it.. From watching him show boat after that race he SEEM like he MAY have it in him... But that's just speculation...

Being able to catch is just starters. Bolt would have learn how to run routes, read coverages and know the plays, block and ect.

And considering Bolt has never played organized football at any level, it would be a risk to take a guy off the street and try to turn him into an football player at the NFL level.

It's not "THAT" hard to learn routes when that's your job.. It ain't like QBs RB, and WRs are the greatest blockers on the team.. Most times I see WR throw blocks they do better letting the RB try to fake out the defender...lol

Bottom line it was all most impossible for Bolt to make an NFL roster if he were to play WR, considering he has never played the game before.

Guys just don't come off the street and play in the NFL with no football experience. Speed, at that point, means nothing because everyone on defense is fast.

They ain't no where NEAR as fast as Bolt.. They would have to play too far off of him... The way they would have to play him alone will help out some offenses..

I don't know. Have a CB jam him at the line and that'll take away some of the speed but I agree. If he can catch then a team will be willing to work with him. He doesn't even have to play every down.

If that is not done perfectly he'll make any CB look like Jason David with his speed.

Will you non-track folks leave Usain be. :smh:

Let him just stick to his love track & field and football (soccer that is).

A track athlete is a completely different mindset from a football player with training, meals, workout regime with weights, etc...

Didn't we all think the same thing about Reggie Bush and Vince Young and every other fast guy who we though could not be contained by NFL defenses?

Folks made Bush out to the best the next Gayle Sayers because he was so fast. Now, people are wondering if he is a bust.
Vince Young made USC's defense look like a high school defense, but has not made it look easy in the NFL.
Defenses will find away to stop or contain a player because the game is so darn fast.

And Bolt will be fresh meat IF he actually makes an NFL roster. Plus, the NFL has not lacked tall, fast receivers over the years. So Bolt would not be unique to the game.

Vince Young has no WR's and Reggie Bush has his face up Kim Kardashian's arse. If Reggie gets his mind on football then he'll be alright and all Vince Young needs is help.

1.Oh, Vince Young has no WRs now? But I thought he was so gifted Young did not need WRs.

2. You don't think while playing at USC Reggie Bush did not have girls throwing it in his face every darn day?

3. Plus, I find it so funny that people want to put Bolt in a NFL uniform, considering he said if he was not a sprinter, he would be a cricket player. (also a very popular international sport) Those cats get paid $800,000 a year. Which is not bad in Jamaica.

1. Who said that Vince Young didn't need receivers? You're reaching.

2. Yeah of course he did but Reggie at USC Reggie didn't have to carry the load for the offense.

3. Yeah we know that he played cricket but $800,000 vs 2-5 Millie not counting endorsements to catch a football. You do the math.

I will agree. My advice to Bolt is to stay on the track.

Brown Trafton, Taylor spur sluggish American track team
By Luke Cyphers
ESPN The Magazine

Updated: August 18, 2008, 6:19 PM ET

BEIJING -- The world champs fizzled. The shot put locks got picked. The jumpers took a great leap backward. For three solid days, the U.S. Olympic track team laid goose eggs all over the Bird's Nest, going without a single gold medal and, in some cases, without a single qualifier for the finals in some of the country's best events.

So Monday night, when the squad needed some gold, it turned to the people in the blue collars.

Stephanie Brown Trafton, a wild-pig-hunting discus thrower who has a sense of humor and a day job, broke the American losing streak with an upset victory.

Then Angelo Taylor, a former gold medalist who two years ago was waking up at 5 a.m. for a job laying electrical cable, reasserted American sprint pride by leading a sweep of the men's 400-meter hurdles.
