Texas Southern, Jackson State, AAMU are the latest SWAC calamities

Let's face it. The SWAC is swiftly becoming a caricature of its former self. Texas Southern and Jackson State are the latest in a long line of sad stories of wasted potential, wasted money and wasted time. The entire conference has flirted with or straight up "went all the way" with the diseased floozy known as administrative lunacy.

Texas Southern paid Mike Haywood nearly $900,000 for 8 wins over 3 years. Decisions of that level can tank an entire corporation. JSU paid two straight coaches upward of a million bucks over two coaches who were both fired prematurely for bad performance.

This is not an attack on any single institution...its a wakeup call for us all. Hell, the people at MY university somehow trusts the same folk who sank an entire athletic department to unheard of losing seasons and rules violations to manage 5 years of a clean record while on NCAA probation.

Family, its time to take some long, hard looks at ourselves and figure out how to get out of this mess. Doing the same thing that worked in the 70s/80s will not cut it anymore.

I dont have all the answers. No one does. But there has to be some new ideas and new voices at the table when hiring and firing decisions get made. No new idea should be off limits.

JSU just needed an AD. With Bell, the AD hired his choice against the will of the admins. With Old Man Jackson, believe it or not, there was a faction of alums who had been trying to get OMJ the job for years. They finally had an AD who would listen and take their money. Not many ADs would have listened to them.

In the case of Texas Southern, I think the intent was good and just didn't work out. Initially, I was happy with the hire of Mike Haywood because he looked good on paper and had worked with some of the best coaches in college football. I have hired and fired several employees over the last 12 years. I have learned that it all about the right fit and not just how the resume looks. Yes, you nee a certain level of experience and knowledge BUT if someone is trainable and has a strong desire to do a great job then you would be amazed on how far you can take them.

That being said, I think that we need to have some incentive based approach with this next hire. Offer a base salary and after one year we'll increase your salary to $$ if you meet certain criteria. For example, number of wins, stay compliant, follow the rules and regulations, development of players, recruiting players, etc.

Your diatribe makes no sense due to the fact that Haywood had a decent record before coming to Texas Southern. That was a good hire. It just didn't work out for him.

Hendrick has one of the best defenses in the SWAC, so what's wrong with giving him a try? He wasn't given any help on the offensive side of the ball and had as his head coach a man who had zero head coaching experience.

I can guarantee that if Hendrick is hired, he won't be given a 300,000 dollar contract.

This is what I see in terms of Coaching in no particular order though numbered:

1) PVU- Upgraded made it over the Grambling hump will continue to improve.
2) AAMU-Upgraded visible improvement good for league.
3) Bama State-Appears to be in trouble.
4) JSU- Future looks brighter-New AD get a chance to put Tigers back in the game.
5) MVSU- Too soon to determine.
6) UAPB- Appears to be in trouble
7) TSU - Believe new AD has seen enough and will take a better route
8) ALCN- 5X East Champ 1X SWAC Champ enough said
9) Gram- 3X West & 3X SWAC Champ enough said
10) S.U.- 3X West Champ 1X SWAC Champ enough said

Haywood was out of coaching since 2010 for domestic violence allegations. Being out of coaching that long negates whatever credibility he had from that record.

Come on man.

where does AAMU fit into this? LOL
Hiring a first time unproven HC that brought in a coaching staff filled with high school and rookie coaches. A staff that refused to adapt to the talent on the roster. Go check Spady's initial staff vs Maynor's.

I specifically left out Sp*dy because some unproven assistants prove themselves. Although personally I think some factors contributed to others passing him up while we didn't.

Example is Fobbs. Credibility with recruits from previous assistant jobs. Plus the pressure of coaching in Robinsons shadow. If Spears could win at Grambling, damn near anybody can.

By virtue of the game, competition and conference play, someone will always be losers in order to have winners. We can not all be at the top of the SWAC. Ask Ole Miss and Vanderbilt Allums. Contact Rutgers, UTEP or even closer to home Valley supporters. If our universities don't keep trying then they have given up. Administrative lunacy can't be claimed at Southern, Alcorn or Grambling. Why? Because they have managed to prevail record wise over the last 5 years with some consistency but as soon as Texas Southern, AAMU and J-State are all topping the SWAC football standings, then someone will claim Admin Psychosis against them.

No it doesn't. That was only five years Haywood was out.
Several coaches have been out of the business for years and have come back.
Texas Southern simply is not a football school and a really bad example for you to use any how because when Haywood came on board, not one football coach has been successful.
Over the last 30 years, ZERO coaches have won one SWAC title at Texas Southern without cheating. Even worse, not one coach has won the SWAC West since it's inception....without cheating.
Haywood was doomed before he even got the job.

I think in-conference coaching is pretty much even among most schools.

I'll always say that the Swac is better when JSU is Good. I'm pleased with Alcorn continued success.

We at Grambling have been Extremely spoiled. We expect Championships and the Pressure that HC face can be a monster. Looking from afar Fobbs has done well for someone with no HC experience.

Ooc is where I wish the Conference gets better.

O concir with this assessment

So why did he take the job?

Think before you answer.
Why did the Cleveland Browns ex-coach take the job with the Bengals after being fired? He had to pay his bills and he thought he could make a difference. That's why most coaches take new jobs.
What coach in his right mind takes a job thinking he's going to fail.

So there were no other jobs he thought he could take that could provide more stability and make a difference at?

I don't know JROCK, based on what I've seen of UAPB and MVSU, I don't think those coaches (Thomas and Dancy) get enough credit for the jobs they are doing. The players on the teams they field play hard. But how the hell can anyone really expect them to field winning teams if the coaches don't have the resources to do so. I think Thomas, Dancy (and MOST HBCU coaches) are victims of a much larger problem in which we expect coaches to do more with less. Some of us think that because we pay them high salaries that is all they need to get the job done. However, if you look at other FCS PWIs you will see that those coaches don't get paid nearly as much but have suitable resources (facilities) to field winning teams.
