Texas Southern, Jackson State, AAMU are the latest SWAC calamities

I don't know JROCK, based on what I've seen of UAPB and MVSU, I don't think those coaches (Thomas and Dancy) get enough credit for the jobs they are doing. The players on the teams they field play hard. But how the hell can anyone really expect them to field winning teams if the coaches don't have the resources to do so. I think Thomas, Dancy (and MOST HBCU coaches) are victims of a much larger problem in which we expect coaches to do more with less. Some of us think that because we pay them high salaries that is all they need to get the job done. However, if you look at other FCS PWIs you will see that those coaches don't get paid nearly as much but have suitable resources (facilities) to field winning teams.

On top of better facilities, they have universities with better structure and functionality between other university departments that affects their programs. While this varies from school to school, a lot of our schools aren't structured as D1 programs.

How many of our schools have development staffs that JUST fundraises for athletics and tosses the funds into a foundation where the funds can grow?

I don't have a problem with paying a coach a top conference salary if he already has a track record and current credibility to replicate it.

But you can tell a lot of these administrators and trustees are just aimlessly throwing dollars around and have NO clue or guidance on the current landscape in college sports.

I really do not think that was our case. Most of us (or some of us) thought we had the guy who could get up over the hump. It just turned out he wasn't. It became evident fairly quickly but we all miss from time to time. I have missed with guys/gals I had work for me. It happens...the thing in my favor is they were not under contract so I could cut bait and keep fishing.

Did you all interview him before hiring him?

I ask this seriously because this is handled differently from location to location.

Ken I have been saying that for years

Plenty of coaches with those available resources get throttled and fired all the time. Then coaches with minimal resources win. I believe it's finding the right fit for your situation. Resources matter but I don't believe its the deciding factor in conference play.

Especially, in our conference. The best resourced and facility schools in our conference are good evidence of that.

What I did was give an opinion more on where the programs are and headed. For example, I stated MVSU situation was too soon to make a determination. What you are stating may be true but is not totally antithetical to what I stated. I probably should have not put "coaching" in my perspectives (though it's difficult to not include where the program is without throwing the coaches in the fray for better or worse).

The best 4 "resourced" schools in the SWAC, at least in the last report, are PV, Bama State, SU, TSU and JSU. Only 1 had a winning football record this year.

That's saying a mouthful!

I think Resources help but at the end of the day it's a Results Based business.

Nobody is gonna get Everything they need from their School either. We All know this.

Are Our Swac coaches getting the Essentials??? Forget the 12 practice fields...Indoor Practice facilities and etc. Are Our Coaches getting the Essentials and not Operating with the Minimum???

Right, that's the point some of us are making. Not to discredit or minimize the importance of being adequately resourced because that is part of the equation, but within our conference getting the right fit per school seems to take on added emphasis to be competitive.

So lets assess these from the top. Forget the football programs for a second. What is the status of these university trustees, presidents and ADs?

Now, with that... Alabama State has won the commissioner's cup what... 5 times in a row? The other sports are doing very well. It just isn't translating to football and basketball wins.

Assess in what ways? Could be very wide-ranging.

In regards to their commitment to:
- making sure other functions of their university are structured to properly support athletics.
- raising funds internally (alumni) and externally (corporate partners)
- hiring capable, experienced compliance staff that wont put programs at risk
- hiring credible coaches and giving them the room to do their jobs and shape the vision of their programs

IMO, these are the essentials an above poster is referring to. A kicker cant hit a field goal if the snap or hold is off and some of our schools have perfected the art of botching the snap and/or the hold then blaming every kicker that takes the field....
