TSU Closing the gap in athletics

I want coaches to have success in the SWAC. Much as I hated for Hopson to leave Alcorn for USM, Hopson left Alcorn in way better shape than when he first got the job. I want the SWAC to have all 10 teams being a threat. I think that Haywood can have success at Texas Southern but he is not going to have it easy as all teams in the WEST are threats with the exception of UAPB.

Well Northern Colorado head coach is very familiar with the SWAC as he was Alcorn HC in 2009 and 2010 and also got Brandon Bridge to sign with us.

I'm disappointed he didn't sign with TSU. On the bright side this gives us an opportunity to sign someone better than Warren.

We Have recently offered the QB from Skyline.

I want to keep my eye on him to see how he does at UNC.

different breed of alum coming up now. They get theirs and that's it and maybe the church or something else will get whatever is left if there is some sort of social/financial/political gain attached.

the alum who was happy to attend college in the segregated era, etc. and cherished the right to earn a degree is slowly dying off. Showing up for homecoming doesn't count as support.

you said something right here!

I believe sTu made a GREAT hire and I expect coach Haywood to deliver.

That's all I'm saying about this matter and I'll be there front row, on sTu's side to witness his continual ascension. sTu is building a powerhouse in athletics. No one can refute that.

You are correct.

It's no surprise to me that we're dominating the SWAC the way we are. And it's only gonna get better for us with all the improvements I'm seeing across campus.

Our AD understands that leadership is the key to successful programs and we have PROVEN great leaders (especially for SWAC standards). And it doesn't hurt that the school is centrally located in Houston. Let's be honest, most college kids would rather live in the middle of Houston on a full scholarship where there is always so much to see and do within 10 minutes of you opposed to say Grambling where there's almost nothing in sight but maybe a Taco Bell and green grass LOL

The same thing was said about Hughes. Until they prove it on the field, to me they are the same ole sTu that looks great against perhaps a Texas College and when the rubber hits the road in conference play get their brains bashed in.

Dominating as in Basketball right? I think Alabama State is the one that can claim the "Dominating the SWAC" title right now.

Let's see.
2016-2017 SWAC Championships*:

1) Men's Basketball - Regular and Tournament
2) Women's Basketball - Regular and Tournament
3) Volleyball - West Regular
4) Women's Golf - Tournament
5) Softball - Regular and Tournament
6) Baseball - Tournament

*Also please note most of our teams finished second or third that didn't win titles.

Based on the above, I think it's fair to say we're dominating the SWAC.

We don't have men's and women's tennis which Alabama State won (we probably would've won that too). We and Alabama State are dominating the SWAC but we won more titles in the most popular sports (basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball).

If Alabama State wins the commissioner's cup this year, it would be their 4th straight win.
That's because they are winning bowling, table tennis, horseshoes, coin toss, bobsled race....and so fourth.

See tsu gray tiger post above, winning what counts. Next up Football....

Five years after getting hit with NCAA sanctions, TSU is excelling on and off the field

............TSU has won 17 Southwestern Athletic Conference championships.

Record-setting run

Seven of those came this year as the Tigers earned regular-season and tournament titles in men's and women's basketball, They also won championships in women's golf, softball and baseball.

The record number of titles comes just five years after TSU was hit with NCAA sanctions.

In October, TSU will be done with the sanctions.

Since 2012, McClelland and his staff have worked tirelessly to improve the athletics department as a whole. Along with the 17 championships it has won in the last three years, TSU also boasts a 65 percent graduation rate.

"It's hard to take major NCAA sanctions, work on those sanctions and at the same time improve your overall level of competitiveness."

McClelland and his staff refused to use the sanctions as an excuse.
"We used it as motivation," he said.

The road hasn't been easy. McClelland said he basically started from scratch. Academics were the top priority.

There were no quick fixes.

PSA: All SWAC member institutions
PREPARE FOR TOTAL DOMINATION!

When TSU wins the football championship in the next few (1,2, or 3) years. I will be doing this dance @ the 50 yard line.

Just remember, your Texas rivals claimed the same thing would happen for them, and we still continued to see SU and Grambling win the West. Never rule out the Louisiana schools.

My comments are not to be a jab at any other program. I believe the TX teams have been their own worst enemy. I also believe based on what I see that TSU is doing things the right way. If you know my history of comments. I leave the gate open, I call it like I see it. This is the first time I have said I believe TSU football is doing things the right way.

This is going to be a serious problem over the next 20 years. I don't think our schools are prepared for it.

I feel ya, this generation is about themselves and not taught the value. All they see is $$ as students get paid for work now that used to be done for experience

I know we're headed in the right direction. Will we be able to recruit similar type talent as GSU, PVU, or SU remains to be seen. We may have superior coaching than the others mention and that may get us over the top. We'll see what our latest recruiting class bring.

As we all know TX likes winners. If TSU can deliver a couple of winning seasons combined with the aggressive nature of current recruiting, TSU will recruit just fine.
