Grant Hill’s Response to Jalen Rose

Although it is getting lost that Jalen Rose said this was his thought's as an 18 year old, this is a powerful response...

I am a fan, friend and longtime competitor of the Fab Five. I have competed against Jalen Rose and Chris Webber since the age of 13. At Michigan, the Fab Five represented a cultural phenomenon that impacted the country in a permanent and positive way. The very idea of the Fab Five elicited pride and promise in much the same way the Georgetown teams did in the mid-1980s when I was in high school and idolized them. Their journey from youthful icons to successful men today is a road map for so many young, black men (and women) who saw their journey through the powerful documentary, “The Fab Five.â€￾

It was a sad and somewhat pathetic turn of events, therefore, to see friends narrating this interesting documentary about their moment in time and calling me a bitch and worse, calling all black players at Duke “Uncle Tomsâ€￾ and, to some degree, disparaging my parents for their education, work ethic and commitment to each other and to me. I should have guessed there was something regrettable in the documentary when I received a Twitter apology from Jalen before its premiere. I am aware Jalen has gone to some length to explain his remarks about my family in numerous interviews, so I believe he has some admiration for them.

I am proud of my family. I am proud of my Duke championships and all my Duke teammates. And, I am proud I never lost a game against the Fab Five.

Grant Henry Hill
Phoenix Suns
Duke ‘94

Ouch! :dead: Powerful. *whistling* :smh:

This is nonsense. Jalen Rose clearly stated this is what was going on in his teenage mind. At what point do the "aggrieved" parties take it at that and leave it alone? I mean really...

All of them are still young and in decent shape. If I were a promoter, I'd get them all on the court, do some type of pay per view for charity or something...neverthless..I see dollars....

Well said by Grant Hill. A touch of CLASS!!! As of grown man, Jalen should have walked his comments backward in some of his current interviews, but he didnt.

Did Jalen Rose say anything that we dont say about each other's school on here?? Things that we say about each other's SWAC players, coaches, refs esp when we were at school. I know when i was 18 and at JSU i always stated i hated SU with a passion, fukk dem yellas all of that. I understand Grant Hill getting mad bc of what was said about his family but all that other stuff was just trash talking.

Again why is no one touching the hate mail the Fab 5 received from the school's alums or Bil Walton's dumbass rhetoric??

For what? The dude was telling you what he thought as an 18 yr old. How many times we seen folks say, "When I was this age, this is what was going through my mind." And we sat there thinking, "You lie!"

Kudos to Grant Hill. So many young black 18 year olds feel the way Jalen did. As if it's a negative to come from a good family background being black. It needs to stop.

This is a BS response by Grant. There was no need for him to comment. J. Rose made it very clear that his "Uncle Tom" comment was how he felt at that time (back when he was 19). He clearly doesn't think that now. Grant knows this, and those of you on here giving Grant a pat on the back know this as well.

Damn shame :shame:

thank you!!! i got respect for Grant Hill and his parents but like i said some of us on this very same board have said the same or worse when it comes to other schools in the swac

THE END

When I read the title, the first thing I asked was "why is he responding, in the first place?..:retard: "

Yep. and FYI that Fab 5 documentary was the highest rated show in ESPN history so that should tell you something that to say these boys never won anything on a collegiate level but their impact on college basketball.

People want to put a spin to it as if Rose made those comments as a 38 year old...

Yea, folks are, basically, kill'n Jalen for "saying" how ALOT of college bball fans felt, and still feel, about Duke. I don't even hate Duke...but, even I had a certain disdain for them at first. Wasn't till years later I started recognizing how good the program, as a whole, was.

Now, they're, atleast, tolerable. Even though my brother, a HUGE Duke fan, pushes the envelope on that at times.

Few things i noticed from hearing both sides.

-Grant Hill says Jalen Rose apologized before the documentary aired..... (so why make a response if he tried to nip it in the bud to avoid this)

-Jalen actually showed Grant Hills family love....he basically said he was jealous that he didnt have what Grant had.

-I think Jalen point was Duke overlooked talent...because they wanted to recruit black players that seemed "safe"..so the opportunity to play for a school like Duke was not available to teens like Jalen even if they were nationally ranked.

-The using the word b*tch...was just trash talk.....I remember Rose admitting that Duke was a good team later after the trash talking.

-Anyone notice when Grant Hill gave the shout out to the former black players..he left out some names....is it because they didnt graduate?

-If Rose apologized beforehand..was Hill doing this more so in defending himself or the university?

But again..if Grant took offense to anything said..its understandable as well...

Winning, Losing and Uncle Toms

It should come as no surprise that Jalen Rose was capable of getting under the skin of longtime rival Grant Hill, especially after he admitted in ESPN’s highly-rated “Fab 5″ documentary that he was “a student of trash talk.”

No, the surprise is that the 38-year-old Hill fell for the bait set out for him by the 18-year-old Rose. In a column posted on The New York Times’ Web site today, Hill responded sharply to an unlearned and unfulfilled teenage foe who no longer exists:

I should have guessed there was something regrettable in the documentary when I received a Twitter apology from Jalen before its premiere. I am aware Jalen has gone to some length to explain his remarks about my family in numerous interviews, so I believe he has some admiration for them.

In his garbled but sweeping comment that Duke recruits only “black players that were ‘Uncle Toms,’ ” Jalen seems to change the usual meaning of those very vitriolic words into his own meaning, i.e., blacks from two-parent, middle-class families.

Same here. Back then, I hated Duke so much I even got pissed whenever I saw a blue and white David Duke governor campaign sign in Louisiana and tore that isht up.

JROCK's Opinion:

Jalen produced this documentary. The comments are attention getting remarks that elicit attention. If some of y'all old azz think back, you we taught (and probably forgot  :emlaugh: ) to do this when you're writing, making a speech, etc. Sure he could have left those comments out but what a great opportunity to get the viewers attention! I'm pretty sure he did not make these comments with malice and even qualified those remarks.........Surely someone with a Duke education could see the transparency of it all. Yes? :emlaugh:

Exactly.. I thought it all was to make the documentary that much better.. and it did...
The way he worded it was brilliant IMO...

Agree with the comments about Jalen giving his perspective as a child and the lack of necessity of a response. BUT....I still despise dook till this day. Not because of the type of players they recruited, but the way the media characterized the people they played against (UNLV, Michigan etc) as thugs, ignorant, less than. I mean, one of the kids who started at guard at UNLV (Hunt?) was president of the young republicans and a real estate investor. It was the media stereotyping that created the biggest backlash. And I came from a two parent home of educated people and never attended public school. Plenty of Blacks were turned off by the way dook and their opposition was positioned in the marketplace.
