Grant Hill’s Response to Jalen Rose

Jalen Rose's response to Grant Hill

http://sicklemaster.com/2011/03/jalen-rose-responds-to-grant-hill’s-op-ed/

Following the Documentary, the most heralded Black Duke player of all time -and a personal friend of mine- Grant Hill, wrote a scathing Op-Ed piece to the New York Times where he defended the legacy of Duke as an institution and gave a sociological dissertation on the ills of the Black America. While Grant was well within his rights to defend his institution and upbringing, he also took the time to refer to my speech as “garbled,” and my opinions as “pathetic.” To those comments I only have to say one thing to Grant…

Fugg you Nagga.

See, I knew yo bitch ass couldn’t resist the opportunity to make sure Massa’s dishes were clean. You just had to write some ho ass essay defending Duke didn’t you? I bet you didn’t even write the shit. Most likely Coach K wrote it and you just edited out all the Naggas and coons he called us. So I called you an Uncle Tom when I was 17, so what? Damn my nagga stop being so sensitive about shit. You looking more and more like the bitch I thought you were with every word you say.

You know what? I stand behind the Uncle Tom shit now, fugg it. When I think of black dudes that went to Duke, names like Elton, Shane, Grant, Thomas (not Tommy), William, (not Billy) and Nolan, pop up in my head. All those names mean your parents wanted you to be Toms since birth. It’s like naming your son Jeeves or Anderson. Why in the fugg would you give him either name unless you want him to wash draws and serve dinners for a living? No matter what you do, name your son Jeeves and he will be a Butler. Name a black dude Shane or Grant, and he WILL listen to Maroon 5. He WILL eat bagels with cream cheese. He WILL watch “Friends”. All those names are little Uncle Tom starter kits. Now take our names, the names of the Fab Five. You got Jalen, Jimmy, Ray, Juwan and Chris, aka real nagga shit. That don’t even sound like no basketball team. It sounds like a bunch of fools banging Hoover Crip if you ask me.

As for your parents, I’ll lemme take this opportunity to say fugg them too. Yeah, they did a good job getting they paper and shit, but I can’t respect the swagless way in which they raised you. Speaking of that, check out this picture of you and your father I found…

What in Cosby Sweaters is going on out this bitch? Shit is ridiculous. And as hard is your pops is supposed to be bankin, he ain’t got the scratch to have his mustache shaped up? On the real my nagga, that don’t even look like a mustache, it looks like failure ate his upper lip. Shit, if having a father means that you have to look this corny, I’ll opt for mom dukes doing the heavy lifting. Y’all took the Cliff and Theo shit too far here. I can’t approve.

People been telling me that you ain’t no Uncle Tom, one reason being because you have an African American Art Collection. When they tell me that, I tell them they stupid like these hoes. Fugg yo art, as a matter of fact you don’t even have it anymore, all your art belongs to me now. I had my Naggas Bop and Lil Tony jack that shit last night. I’m selling it and using the money for the charter school I’m building in the hood. The hood, Nagga. The place where you can get 15 chicken wings for 2.99. The place where the stove is a heater. The place you don’t know shit about.

I look forward to your response to this letter, because if you get flip with me this time I’m clean fugging you up. Real shit, let’s see if the suburbs showed you how to use them hands. And I ain’t giving yo fragile ass an injury time-out either. I know why yo ankles bad anyway, too much grabbing them for the white man. I’m out ho. Watch who the fugg you talking to in the future, I’m from Detroit bitch, I’ll smack the black back into yo vanilla ass.

Sincerely,

Jalen Rose.

And as for Tamia, I fugged.

Agree with the comments about Jalen giving his perspective as a child and the lack of necessity of a response. BUT....I still despise dook till this day. Not because of the type of players they recruited, but the way the media characterized the people they played against (UNLV, Michigan etc) as thugs, ignorant, less than. I mean, one of the kids who started at guard at UNLV (Hunt?) was president of the young republicans and a real estate investor. It was the media stereotyping that created the biggest backlash. And I came from a two parent home of educated people and never attended public school. Plenty of Blacks were turned off by the way dook and their opposition was positioned in the marketplace.

Greg Anthony was the young rebublican...

I hated Dook then and I hate them now. Those Davis boys and were the worst. I hated UNC too but I got over that in time and respected their game. but I hate Duke and coach K...That will not change.

Its interesting that people are upset with blacks that come from 2 parent families, middle income and have access to top universities. Instead of being happy for someone doing well, there is name calling.

Who said that? People are upset at the TOP UNIVERSITIES not the blacks that go. The issue is that certain universities will not give some one like Jalen a chance because they dont fit an image. So if Jalen really liked Duke BASKETBALL..he wouldnt be able to play because they wouldnt recruit him no matter how good he played because he didnt fit an image. Jalen isn't saying Grant is a Uncle Tom but the University probaly views him as one because they picked him over others because he fits an image. Is the image that of Uncle Tom? cant say..but what is Duke selection criteria? What makes them get a pool of high talent but only attempt to recruited certain ones over other? The FAB 5 were all nationally ranked players..but only Webber got recruited by Duke...who happened to be the one at the white private school.

Unfortunately that's not the message that rings loudest in the Black community today. There seems to be a segment of American Black culture that measures its blackness based on how much street credibility it has. And that credibility apparently is gained by how hard a man's circumstances were growing up.

The harder, more blighted and more violent the neighborhood, the more credibility it offers. The more distant the father, the more credibility goes to the son. The more jobs mom had to work to make ends meet, the more credibility the latchkey kid gets.

This stinkin' thinkin' embraces unfortunate circumstances and uses them as some misguided measure of social supremacy — with the man who survived the most crap being the winner.

And, in turning a situation that already is askew completely upside down, the logic further dictates that Black men from more educated, middle class and complete homes must obviously be less Black.

The sad thing about this approach is it celebrates poverty and hardship and frowns upon prosperity and blessing.

That has nothing to do with measuring a person by race. That is measuring a person by his economic rank

WHAT IF IT WAS HOWARD UNIVERSITY INSTEAD OF DUKE, THAT RECRUITED THE SAME TYPE PLAYERS AS DUKE AND WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL WOULD THE PEOPLE WHO HATE DUKE SO MUCH HAVE THE SAME HATE FOR HOWARD?

Although, it appears on the surface things have changed, but deep inside things really are the same. I enjoyed reading all the comments, because they are a reflection of our society. I still talk to folks who believe that a degree from a PWC will pay more than one from a HBCU. If George Wallace in Alabama changed for policital reason and Bear Bryant, why try to make more out of what Jalen said.

I heard an argument recently that because of what the Fab Five put Michigan through during and well after their time on campus, that school no longer recruits cats like Jalen Rose either.

Best quote on this topic so far.

. As long as there are ignorant adults perpetuati*ng stereotype*s then this fight will continue.
