2009 Mississippi Highschool Football----Breakdown 1a to 6a

Ok Sippians.
This is the start of a new era in Highschool football in Mississippi.
Class 6A has been added and now we have school's that have dominated their class now moving up in class.

Out of all the classes, from top to bottom, I pick class 5a as the nightmare class although 6a is top heavy with a bunch of beast's..
Class 6A is about the same as the old 5A.

Question of this year is in class 2A in my opinion.
CAN PUCKET, WHO DOMINATED CLASS 1A FOREVER WHO HAS POSTED A 57-7 RECORD, INCLUDING A 52-2 RECORD UNDER THEIR HEAD COACH THE LAST 4 YEARS, AND WENT UNDEFEATED LAST YEAR DO THE SAME IN 2A.
Get this.
For the first time in 6 year's Puckett is not rated the top school in their class.
They are rated the 5th best in their 1st year in 2a.
They return Jeremy Palmer who rushed for 2,241 yards and 30 TD's last year.

Another shocker in 6a.
For the first time in 8 years, The University of South Panola is #2 in the Super Poll
.
I see some mad Tigers comming out of Batesville led by BIG PARKER.
I see S. P claiming the 1st 6A state title but they will have to get past #1 ranked Madison Central who is also loaded this year.
(I still say if BIG was not hurt, Meridian would not be state champs.
They could not handle Big Parker on a messed up ankle
).

CLASS 6A
First 6A season has loaded field.
New Class 6a.
Preseason Rankings
Team 2008 Record

1. Madison Central 12-2
2. South Panola 14-1
3. Oak Grove 12-2
4. Ocean Springs 9-2
5. Olive Branch 10-3
Others to watch
Clinton, Hattiesburg, Meridian, Northwest Rankin, Petal

Madison Central--Locked, loaded and loving it at #1 in Super 10 poll
Poor mouthing might be the oldest of all coaching tactics, one perfected by Alabama's legendary Bear Bryant.
Just don't expect any such talk around Madison Central this fall.
High expectations? The Jaguars are embracing and adding to them, not running the other way.
MC kicks off the 2009 season as the No. 1 team in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10 football rankings - and Jags coach Bobby Hall is glad to hear it
.

Unfamiliar territory for University of South Panola at #2 in Super 10 Poll
The winning streak ended last December.
South Panola's four-year run as the state's No. 1 ranked team in the preseason Super 10? Well, that has now come to an end, too.
Oh, and the Tigers return just two starters on defense and five on offense.
So what is it that has third-year Tigers coach Lance Pogue so thrilled about the 2009 season?

#3 ranked Oak Grove ready for title run as #3 in Super 10 Poll.[/U][/B]
Oak Grove Warriors
Coach: Nevil Barr (209-97, 27th season)
2008 record: 12-2 (5A semifinals)
Players to watch: WR Steve McNair Jr., WR Robert Johnson, RB Jay Hughes, DL Vince Taylor, QB James McMahon, LB LeBrandon Mosely.
Don't miss: Oct. 9 vs. Meridian
Outlook: No unit in Mississippi may be more fun to watch than Oak Grove's offense. Hughes, Johnson and McNair can take it the distance at any time, while McMahon has plenty of experience at QB. The O-line is a question mark, but Barr and staff usually find a way to make the Warriors solid up front. The retooled defense has a bonafide star in Taylor.

Class 5a.
Preseason Rankings
Team 2008 Record

1. West Jones 10-4
2. Wayne County 12-1
3. West Point 8-3
4. Picayune 10-2
5. Moss Point 6-4
Others to watch
Brookhaven, D'Iberville, New Hope, Pearl, Provine

Class 5a Preview.
Winning a Class 5A state championship is the ultimate goal for West Jones, Wayne County and Picayune.
Capturing a Region 3-5A title may prove almost as difficult, however.
The aforementioned trio from the geographically far-flung region are among the top four in The Clarion-Ledger preseason rankings for 5A teams, which includes the 33rd- through 64th-largest schools in the state

CLASS 4A
Preseason Rankings
Team 2008 Record

1. Noxubee County 14-0
2. Louisville 12-3
3. Shannon 12-2
4. St. Stanislaus 8-3
5. Lafayette County 8-5
Others to watch
Itawamba AHS, Lawrence County, Northeast Jones, Quitman, South Pike

Louisville look to keep form in 4A

Louisville coach Brad Peterson led his alma mater to its seventh state championship last season.
The seven titles ties juggernaut South Panola for the most in the history of the Mississippi High School Activities Association.
Now Louisville moves from Class 3A to 4A where it will go for title No. 8
.

CLASS 3A
Preseason Rankings
Team 2008 Record

1. Tylertown 12-1
2. Forest 14-1
3. Aberdeen 10-3
4. Hazlehurst 8-3
5. Ripley 9-3
Others to watch
Charleston, Corinth, Franklin County, Perry Central, Philadelphia

Tylertown aims to be TITLE TOWN.

Walter Denton isn't changing a darn thing.
There's no reason.
The Tylertown coach heads into his 19th season at the school with virtually the same team as last year - when the Chiefs went undefeated before being knocked off by Louisville in the Class 3A championship game.
"We're going to do the same stuff," Denton said

CLASS 2A
Preseason Rankings
Team 2008 Record

1. West Boliver 10-3
2. Bassfield 11-3
3. Scott Central 8-4
4. Taylorsville 12-1
5. Puckett 14-0
Others to watch
Ackerman, Baldwyn, Calhoun City, North Forrest, Hollandale Simmons

#1 West Boliver set to grind it out.

With his starting running back and three offensive linemen returning, West Bolivar coach Henry Johnson is ready to run the ball.
And his workhorse is 5-foot-10, 220-pound Quintar-ius Banks.
"We want to run that football and hit you in the mouth and play great defense," said Johnson, whose team went 10-3 and lost in the quarterfinals a year ago.
"If we can run it," he added, "we are going to run it."

Puckett unwilling to cede dynasty.

PUCKETT - The sign along Highway 18 welcoming folks to Puckett proudly boasts that the town is home to "300 friendly folks and a few old soreheads."
Perhaps someone may consider adding that the rural Rankin County community is also home to Mississippi's best small-school dynasty this decade.
The Wolves already have three Class 1A state titles this decade, including two (2006 and '08) the last three years. In addition, they've made the short trip to Jackson for the title game each of the past three seasons.

CLASS 1A
Preseason Rankings
Team 2008 Record

1. Durant 12-1
2. Ray Brooks 12-1
3. Weir 9-3
4. Mount Olive 12-2
5. Vardaman 9-4
Others to watch
Bogue Chitto, Okolona, Noxapater, Smithville, St. Aloysius

Can Durant fill Puckett's void in 1A .

Teams competing in Class 1A this season have little need for added motivation.
The reigning class champion, Puckett, has moved up to 2A, as has the runner-up, Calhoun City.
"Puckett spoiled it for everybody," Mt. Olive coach Perry Murphy said. "It's a change for the better, the competition level in 1A went up. It will open the door for a lot of schools."
While the door is open, it won't be easy to get through, says says Ashley Kuhn, the coach of preseason No. 1 Durant
.

How many high schools are in each class? Never seen just a top 5.

That's just the way they break it down. There's an OVERALL Top 10. MC is #1 in that one too. But this is a breakdown of Top 5 per class. I believe there are 16 teams in 6A. It's different for the smaller divisions.

The NEW 5a is TOUGH.... I hope my Brookhaven Panthers do well...
*They have the 4th Toughest Schedule in the state, according to the CL*

What was the catalyst for the change? Should make things interesting tho. I can only assume that my school remains in 3A. I see all the teams we normally play there 'cause if we moved down to 2A and not ranked...something is wrong! :D

Too many different size school's for 5 classes.
That's why you saw school's dropping or going up in class every 2 or 3 years.
One year a school would be 5a and the next year they drop to 4a.
Terry went from 3a to 5a in less than 4 years.

This should put the breaks on that.

Yeah, over the last 10 years, I know my school has been up and down from 3-A to 4-A a few times...maybe even 2A.

When did Tylertown become this good? And how in the hell does Hazlehurst continue to have good teams and Crystal Springs continue to suck? I just don't get it. Cats drink from the same damn water. I bet Crystal Springs is still hiring those sorry white coaches. Mofos couldn't coach worth a damn when I was there.

:snicker: Is Coach Wilson still coaching there? He left Crystal Springs to become the bball coach down there many years ago. We were mad as hell when that happen. Dude was a good coach.

Tylertown has a couple of athletes at WR, DB and QB. They have a lot of team speed. As for the Copiah County thing, I think a lot of boys in the area who are serious about football are going to Hazlehurst to play. Even if they are zoned for C.S.H.S. Take South Panola, for example. A lot of those kids are zoned for North Panola, but choose to go "USP" to be a part of a better program.

My hometown hire an Alcorn Alum.
He is slowly building the program back up.
Got them hitting weights hard and really working them out.

I don't understand why C.S. been down so long either.
Ain't like they don't have all the shat they need on that Jr. College type campus.
They won 6 or 7 games last year and got waxed by Hazelhurst.

All I know is we kicking Jackson Lanier arse Friday night."

 Well, Coach left Brookhaven back in 02 i think, went and coached at Lawrence Co. and some other school....
He is back at Brookhaven High now. This will be his 1st season back...
I auditioned to be On Wilson's team back when I was in HS...
That man did NOT pick me! (I was too :kaioken:)

Now that he is back, I "might" go check out a game or two.

I think Todd McDaniel was coaching there at one time. He played football and graduated from Alcorn, but was from Hazlehurst. Can't have no Hazlehurst dude coaching at CS. That don't even sound right.

That's because you couldn't hoop. He was a football coach at CS during my 9th grade year. Dude kicked me off the team. He allowed me back though. We were hoping he would become either the head football or basketball coach there, but he got the hell out of dodge when Brookhaven came calling. Dude was a really good coach.

I remember Hazlehurst used to suck.

That must have been way back in the day. They have had a consistent winning program as far as I can remember. What I love about them is they always had an all black staff. Those cats could coach.

I mean, dude could have at least picked me for my height (6'5) :noidea: It would have looked good on "paper" lol
but you right... I was an "average" ball player smh
and Yes, Wilson is a great coach.

I could just see my brothers playing for a hazelhurst dude back in the day.
There would have been a failure to communicate.

Johnny Young is the coach now.
I just noticed.

I think McDaniels was at a JPS school coaching before coming back to Hazlehurst after Coach Brown went to the Delta.

We used to feel sorry for Hazelhurst when we played them because we beat them so bad.
Back then, Crystal Springs used teams like Forrest Hill and Pearl for Homecomming bait.
The only team we just could not beat was Warren Central.
