2009 Mississippi Highschool Football----Breakdown 1a to 6a

But I rememeber in the Brookhaven tournament (vs B'haven) he tried to go up and poke one but Melvin Smith went up & pinned it against the glass with 2 hands! Now that was nasty! Melvin was the only player I saw that year with more hops than Hackett!

Bruh, Derell used to always talk about that Melvin guy. He said Melvin had more hops than anybody in the state! He said dude would average 5 or 6 dunks against Lawrence County!

Do you know my know/remember Garcia Dion L?
He played football for C.S during the mid 1990's........Linebacker.

I remember a dude name Dion, but Garcia??? Maybe that was his real name. I think my freshman year he started center and middle linebacker. I think he is kin to those Crislers.

Yes I remember that. That Melvin guy also caught an alley-oop on Kieth Dixon in that same game. That guy has some major hops.
Do you remember Tadaka Dent though in '96? Dude was mean! He used to get the rock in the post, take one power dribble and go up strong with that left handed smash! Oooh wee!

Yes I remember Tadaka. Big mofo should've played football. He probably was one of the biggest/strongest cats in high school. Cat out there trying to hoop. :smh:

I think the 96-97 squad was better than 97-98 because that 98 class didn't have strong back court play. That's why they lost in the Big House. Canton used a full court press. Edward Moses was my boy, but he couldn't handle the ball well enough... and Tay was just a shooter/scorer.

So true. Ed was average at best and Tay was totally overrated. Canton also had this bug guy they called baby Shaq. Dude played that game with a cast on one hand and still was unstoppable. I think he went to Arkansas.

Melrose is Memphis's best team or they have been. Whitehaven is rated higher this year. That will be a good test..

Melvin Smith was something serious! :lecture: And Thomas Terrell Was just as much of a threat, but he was just sorta lazy. (imo)
but every Gym Melvin Played in, he sent the wow'd the crowd and sent them into a Frenzy!

and Yes, Melvin had more hops than anybody in the state (at the time)

Yep. :lmao:
Garcia is his first name but everybody called him Dion.
That's my nephew.
Rose Crisler is my aunt.

My sister, Dion's mom, teach school at Brookhaven Highschool.
His little brother just turned 15.
Dude is 6'2" bout 210 pounds and will be on their squad this year.

Do you remember BIG AZZ Aaron Yarborough who played football for Brookhaven? He was a freight train and ran over everybody that stood in his way... Dude was HUGE and he played basketball also  That was tooo funny. Dudes hated see him on the Field and on the Court.

Derell didn't lie. Melvin was ridiculous... But he didn't just dunk 5-6 times against Lawrence County only. He did that against the entire southern region of MS... Hazlehurst included. We used to bet on how many times he would dunk in a game.

Don't worry, I got you covered. The Brookhaven season highlight tape is at my crib. It includes the Hazlehurst, Lawrence Co & Crystal Springs embarrassments... plus the Hoopfest dunk contest (which Melvin actually lost to one of my best friends from Hazlehurst)... Melvin was trying to show off I think, and missed some dunks... My boy was cold too though. He & Melvin were both dunk legends, so that dunk contest was well hyped around the area once word spread that they both were entered... They were sending each other warnings at school through mutual acquaintances!

Keith Dixon and Cedric Travis were in that dunk contest as well, but in different age groups. If you recall, Cedric is the brother of ex-JSU tight end Kendrick Travis and was a dandy dozen in 99... He could fly!

But yeah the footage is at da crib so just fall thru bruh... I can't believe I haven't shown it to you already. I showed it to Derell before. He was running around on there getting dunked on I think. :lmao:

Yeah, Yarbrough was a train man!

Yeah I remember him. We started to play Brookhaven in football the year after I graduated, so I didn't play against him. But the first year CS played against him (fall of '97), they shut him down the first half. But the second half was a whole different ball game. He ran like a mad man.

Thomas was a freak. Dude was big with a nice post-up game, but could step out and nail the 3 with ease. Sweet stroke. He's playing overseas now. One of his teammates just got drafted this past NBA draft. The whole team was at the draft cheering him on and you could see Thomas there congratulating him when he got picked.

Thanks for that Update... My brother played ball with him in HS and he has been trying to find out what ole Thomas was up to!

Thats great News

and it was OVER once Thomas hit the 3pt line :shame:

These guys we're discussing would have been MAD MEN in the SWAC! (basketball and football)

I was hoping JSU could get Thomas Terrell. (Rod Dixon didn't live up to expectation at JSU though)... Melvin really wasn't college basketball material. He didn't have a jump shot and no true position. He was a tweener. Just a freak athlete with hops... He went on to run track for a little bit at a JUCO... Meridian maybe?...

So true. The only guy that we have discuss who went to a SWAC school was Joseph (JoJo) McKinney. He played ball at JSU and was pretty good.

Yea, I agree... Rod was great for HS ball but didn't do well at the college level. (I never got to see him play for JSU but I heard about it...)
I was Home Visiting not too long ago and I ran into him... he is now a GM Manager at Brookhaven's Wal-mart.

Thomas went on to Play for GATech I believe... I didn't keep up with his stats there but I hear he did well! I saw him on Tv once or twice.

Jason was back in town for the 4th of July at the family get together.
His lite brite arse is in Atlanta now with Andre and some more family members that expanded East.

I'm part of the LILLY clan.

Cool. Jason was my boy in high school. He played football with us until he hurt his knee. Heck I used to hang out at Jason's and his grandparents house all the time so we might have crossed path before. I haven't talk to him in a few years now. I remember big Andre also.

I remember Derrick. Sorry to hear that he passed away. I got to look Jason up next time I pass through the ATL. I'm pretty sure he's enjoying it out there.

Do you remember or attend high school with big Malcolm Taylor?
