USC: Best team in the country?

So the Pac 10 sucks because USC has won it four years in a row and got the automatic BCS slot? Arizona State was screwed out of a spot last season when the Rose Bowl picked an undeserving Illinois team to play in the game, leading to other bowls to change who they were picking. Had the Rose Bowl picked the best team available, Georgia, to replace Ohio State, Arizona State would have landed in either the Sugar Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl. The only BCS game that wanted to pick Illinois was the Rose Bowl, who got first pick based on Ohio State being taken away for the national title game.

So, the PAC has zero schools to play in BCS bowls, other than USC, over the last four years? Is that what you're saying?

Ya'll will come up with some cockamie nonsense to defend the Southeastern Conference.

The SEC, especially in the BCS era, has hid behind its "toughest league in the nation" moniker to NOT consistently play intersectional matchups against the Big 12, Big 10, ACC, Big East and Pac 10. In fact, the SECs stubborness to go play the best around teh nation has bit it in the arse when it came to the national championship (well that and their sorry non-conference schedules)

Outside of Florida playing Miami/Florida State (rivalry games) and UGA playing Georgia Tech (rivalry game), I don't remember SEC teams consistently playing quality intersectional (non-conference) matchups--unless it was those times Auburn and Arkansas got dealt with by USC.

And what does the conference has to do with the team? That's idiotic to penalize USC because of the league it belongs to. That's like saying Grambling isn't as good Sam Houston St. or South Carolina State because of how sorry the SWAC East, Texas Southern and UAPB was.

This is the greatest run by USC since the 60s-70s. It's not like USC been playing Applachian State, UL-Monroe, Western Carolina and the ilk nonconference during that time. It's also not like the rest of the Pac-10's been like the SWAC East during Carroll's tenure as well.

The Pac-10 is better than what people think, and part of that is competing against USC. Oregon's a tough out, Cal-Berekley's a quality program, Arizona State's a good team. Now Arizona's up-n-coming, and UCLA's the other sleeping giant on the West Coast.

Heck, Georgia just went west for the first time in like 50 years this season...to play Arizona State. They weren't going to South Central to play the men of Troy.

Jayrob........What's the title of this thread again? Nobody's arguing Pac-10 vs SEC. We're debating whether USC is the best team in the country. Whch is a valid question.

USC putting up 70 on the SEC runner up was a larger victory against them than the SEC champ that year was able to muster (against a one man offense) but again I say that's another topic.

A team's conference record does have a bearing on that team's quality of wins. If it didn't, then Utah would be in the championship game.

The PAC 10 hasn't had one school represent it in a BCS game in the last four years, while the SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 have had multiple teams to represent. To an extent, the PAC 10 holds USC back, no smack, just fact.

A school's RPI rating is very important when it comes to rankings.

Thank you for saying this Journalist.

Ask Utah that question. RPI ratings are based on quality wins. Usually when the SEC plays tougher opponents in bowl games, they usually win year in and year out.

The SEC brings home more bowl money than any conference in the nation due to it's teams winning those bowl games that dish out the big bucks. Those bowl game organizers usually schedule teams based on RPI ratings for the most part.

Whether one likes the SEC or not, one can't deny that it's the best football conference in the nation year in and year out.

I also think it's worth considering that LSU and many SEC schools benefit from scheduling as many as 7 (sometimes 8!) home games each year. I don't believe you'll see this type of scheduling with USC.

The SEC, Pac-10 and Big Ten have bowl ties. The reason the SEC has two teams playing in the BCS because a SEC has to go to the Sugar Bowl and Florida/ LSU played in the BCS title game.

Last season the Big Ten, with ties to the Rose Bowl, had Illinois play USC and Ohio State play in the BCS title game.

The each conference has one guaranteed BCS bowl contract.

If Oregon State does not lay an egg against Oregon, they would have played in the Rose Bowl and USC probably would have played in the Holiday Bowl.

Only one non-BCS school is guaranteed a BCS slot. However, because they are in a non-BCS conference it would make it difficult for a school like Utah or Boise State to play in the title game because the rest of the conference has a weak SOS.

Isn't the Rose Bowl a home game for USC? Practically 11 miles from the USC campus, whereas most Big 10 schools have to travel 1100 miles

Again I ask you.......what does that have to do with the title of this thread? The title of this thread is not Pac-10 vs SEC or which conference is the best. That point is moot especially since USC's strength of schedule ranking is 14.

1. Utah reached another BCS bowl because it did what it had to do on the field to earn a BCS berth. That's part of the appeasement the BCS cartel of conferences made to the non-BCS conferences so that the lil guys wouldn't sue the hell out of the BCS to make a full-fledged playoff (remember Tulane in 1993?).

2. The SEC has about seven or eight bowls it has tie-ins to, including its traditional Sugar Bowl spot. That's the other reason why these leagues increased membership to up to 12 members, to maximize on post-season play and increased revenue sharing. It's not about quality of team. RPI has never had a damned thing to do with bowls, besides the RPI is most commonly used for NCAA basketball tournament seeding and at-large bids.

3. The bowl promoters, just like Classic Promoters, ain't gonna be looking at RPI when hooking up bowl matchups. If RPI was the case, Boise State would've gotten the other at-large BCS bid than 10-2 Ohio State. Ohio State puts more arses in the seats and gives a higher TV rating, so the promoters/BCS folks, invited them in there. The only bowl game that uses rankings to put its participants in is the BCS title game itself. Everyone else looks at matchups in terms of drawing biggest ratings.

Gee, that sounds like how Classic Promoters try to book these classics: putting arses in seats.

I'm not sure if I follow you on that point. Is the Sugar Bowl a home game for LSU? I'm just making the observation that SC tends to play a more balanced home/away schedule --- irrespective of competition. I realize that the SEC as a whole is strong but there's a distinct advantage knowing that you will go on the road as few as three times during the regular season.

LSU doesn't get the opportunity to play there every year like USC gets. Winning the PAC 10 automatically would get them a home game at the Rose Bowl. LSU winning the SEC is not a sure thing, but USC winning the PAC 10 is a virtual lock.

An extra game at home against a weak school is deserved being that SEC teams have to go on the road to play the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, etc..

Please stop acting like LSU has it so hard especially with a strength of schedule ranking of 41.

You brought that up, now you're trying to divert. I simply said that USC had a home game at the Rose Bowl. LSU didn't have a home game when they played against Georgia Tech in Atlanta on yesterday did they? Sounds like GT had the home field advantage.

I don't care what kinda schedule USC plays. They'd kick the crap outta Florida or Oklahoma.

Florida can match the speed and then Usc IS IN TROUBLE.You guys are fooled by USC and the news outlets. They are suspect and if they get punched in the mouth the wilt. Mofos had trouble with arizona State..LOL please they are overated. They should have molly whomp Penn State and they didn't...

Didn't Florida lose to Ole Miss at home a few weeks after USC lost on the road to Oregon State?

But yet, they leaped frogged the Trojans in the polls only because of college football politics. Heck, USC went two weeks without moving in the polls even though they dominated their opponents.

I don't think anyone on this board is saying USC is unbeatable, but those cats have been the most dominate team in this decade and nobody can deny that. Most consective 11-win seasons in NCAA history, two national titles and a 82-9 record since Pete Carroll landed in Los Angeles.

Man, SEC folks get real defensive. Don't be. I know college football is all ya'll can hang your hats on, but show some respect to USC.

Let's not forget to add the likes of Vandy, Ole Miss, Miss State, S. Carolina, Arkansas and Kentucky (half the conference) to that rough and tough SEC schedule. Yes, in addition to the 4 cupcakes LSU schedules as money making home games there may be as many as 4 cupcake conference games automatically put on the schedule. Why is it that nobody ever mentions the SEC cupcakes when strength of schedules are mentioned.

Kendrick the SEC has baskeball and baseball don't get it twisted. Shoot Flordia won back to back titles just two years ago so save it.
USC is overated and if they played in a better conference they would not be considered so great. Yeah florida lost to Ole piss but ole piss is 8-4 and was close to 11-1 in some very close loses.
If USC is so great then go undefeated and don't worry about the polls. They aint won a national title in several years. They still aint played nobody yet. The Big Ten is shyt and will be shyt. Just face it Penn State was never had a fighting chance so what makes thme look good again. They beat a slow arse big ten team. I respect them but I just don't see all the hype. hey are decent but lets see how they do next season after losing all that defensive talent. Florida came right back after losing theres.

Bottom Line, USC offense isnt good enough to hang with the Sooners or the Gators.. Penn State was just too slow. We knew that going into the game. the Southern Teams has more team speed thats why Pete spends a lot of time in the south recruting... Heck Pete went to Jonesboro himself to try to get charles Scott.. The style of play that the schools USC play will never match up with them. But a speedy team like Florida will make USC play honest. All the crossing routes and speedy WR will show why Mays will be a LB in the league. And the Gators (not sure about OK) defensive speed will give USC QB problems and less time then what he is use too... But the Championship game should be USC vs Florida or the sugar Bowl should be Alabama vs USC. But Hey this is how the shoot callers want it... they dont have to expose too many teams yearly...

1. Baseball, Didn't Georgia lose the College World Series to Frenso State this year? In fact, better baseball is played on the West Coast by the way. No team from the SEC has won the national title since 1998.

As far as basketball, if you take out Florida winning back to back, no team had won the NCAA title since Kentucky did in in 1998.

2. USC lost half its starters on defense from last year and finished this season No. 1 in the nation. USC lost Carson Palmer, Reggie Bush, Lendale White, Matt Leinhart, John David Booty, Mike Williams, Steve Smith, Dwayne Jarrett, Matt Cassel, Troy Polamalu, Lofa Tatupu, but yet find some way to end almost every season in the Top 10.

Man, give it up already and admit USC is a great football program. It is not that hard.

Bottom Line, USC offense isnt good enough to hang with the Sooners or the Gators.

Ask OU if USC wasn't good enough back during the 2004 Orange Bowl in that 55-19 ass kicking on national TV?

Bottom line, some...no...MOST of you simply don't know enough nor have seen enough of the Pac-10 teams to know any better. You people are simply clueless as is most on the East coast and the South.

They said that big as #2, all 6'2", 235 lbs, was the fastest guy on USC's team. 4.25 40 yd. dash. Ain't nobody gone outspeed USC. These SEC defenders keep changing their arguments like women. They're making invalid points that are easily shot down, then wanna ignore it.

Same Ole G, it ain't ignorance. It's denial.

I made none football comments because Kendrick stated that all the SEC has is Football and that's a Lie.

When has USC went up against a top SEC team. When?

Tell the BCS to stop putting the sorry arse big ten in the title game and then maybe we will see how good USC really is.

Florida has just as much speed as USC. Shoot Florida has had the top recruiting classes the last three years.

Nobody is discrediting that USC is a great team and Pete Carroll is a great coach but everytime we fall for it USC lets us down. Look at some of the loses over the last few years. It's there own fault not ours.
