SU facilities out of compliance

State Auditor Daryl Pupera said that a review to analyze environmental and structural conditions at the flagship Baton Rouge campus, the Southern Law Center and the Agricultural Research and Extension Center revealed significant problems with plumbing, ventilation, HVAC and mold in several facilities. The issues, which place the campuses in significant jeopardy for legal liability, will remain if funds aren’t appropriated by state legislature for remediation and renovation.

Exactly, SU needs most of its buildings torn down. Stop all this half ass renovations..everytime I see anything from.the state.. money wise to SU.. it's always fixing a roof or patch work.... ,, JUST demolish the damn building... I get sick.and tried of the state throwing chump change at million dollar problems.. THIS IS STR8 NEGLECT.

I have said it before SU needs to seek a higher court, because it's REALLY sad IN 2016 to have buildings like that.., I mean from the College of science, social science, business, all of those buildings need to be demolish

He'll SUNO WILL HAVE BETTER facilities then SUBR.

Before you go tearing down buildings, I do believe a cost assessment needs to be done to determine which buildings have a usable life span left in them versus those that do not. Just because the exterior of a building is not aesthetically pleasing to your eyes, it doesn't mean that the building has structural and design deficiencies. I'm really not sure where you getting that most of the buildings on SU's campus should to be replace, because 21 out of 140 is less than most. There are a lot of universities, including LSU and other HBCUs with facilities over 50 to 60 years old. IMO, SU needs to do a better job in facility maintenance. I know A.W. Mumford Field House is not that old, but it was stated in the article to have a mold problem. SU shouldn't replace A.W.Mumford Field House for a mold problem, but SU should require its maintenance department to do a better job of maintaining the buildings on campus. IMO, SU's biggest problem is hiring people in their Office of Facility Services that are not qualified maintenance specialist. Even from my days at SU, I've always been embarrassed of the lack of maintenance on campus. IMO, SU needs to fire everyone in facility maintenance and rehire qualified individuals. Also, I do agree that more money is needed to replace some things that are just worn out, but over half of the buildings on SU's campus don't need replacing.

Among the findings of the report that was released Monday, auditors found that 21 of the 140 buildings at Louisiana’s largest historically black university had “life safety code deficiencies” that had been previously cited by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The violations ranged from broken sprinkler systems and elevators to missing ceiling tiles and electrical panel issues.

Mold has been detected in at least three buildings, including the A.W. Mumford Field House that holds some 20 staff members on a daily basis and about 300 student-athletes who use it for study hall all year.

PLEASE,, YOU SOUND STUPID, SU BUILDING ARE NOT EVEN UP TO CODE FOR RESEARCH, PLUS GO LOOK AT YOUTUBE POSTING OF BOARD MEETING, SU BUILDING ARE IN deteriorating shape.. no maintenance can fix that.. college professor point out that SU LOSES MILLIONS OF DOLLARS DUE TO THE FACILITIES ON SU CAMPUS, SU HAS BEEN PATCHING UP ROOFS FOR OVER 2O YEARS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, , we are in the business of research and education..... any smart fool knows, the more you do patch work to million dollar problems, the more expensive the problem will be in the long run.. WHY SPEND 10 MILLION TO renovate the College science building, when you could just build a new one,, and 10 million is far to low for the issues in that building. ..

And go till the maintenance crew what you just posted, you even have board members saying the staff is over worked...

Whenever you have board members and presidents whining and not coming up with solutions, they don't want to solve the problem.

I agree the administration is somewhat to blame. ., but when I hear people say that, some of the buildings on the campus does not need to be torn down and the issue is maintenance then I have to disagree

Some of SU buildings do not meet code due to ADA/handicap accessibility requirements. Did you read the article, because right now you sound like a DAMN FOOL. You know damn well SU or any school for that matter will not receive the amount of funding to replace over half of its facilities overnight. Leaky roofs, ADA requirements, and mold do not constitute replacing an entire building.

Haven't heard them whining. They have presented the issues to the state numerous times and only get approved for pennies on the dollar for need. Patchwork funding is all these buildings have received for a good decade.

I guess I'm coming from a different point of view because the state of Louisiana was not always in the decline that it is in now due to budget cuts... when the state had money to improve the facilities on the Southern University campus the request was ignored now that the state is basically broke and there is no money to improve the facilities now it is making news

I used to live in the dormitories on SU's campus and maintenance on SU's campus are one of the worst I've ever seen.

GSU is the same way. When the four lane road was built it is higher than the building. The dumbasses should have upgraded the drainage. Well last year it rained for four days and flooded. Water went in buildings and loosened abestos(sp) in Woodson Hall. Now the building is being basically remolded. There are more buildings like this.

I have had disagreements with fellow HOG members about the old buildings. My belief is they should be torn down completely because of these dangers. Yet, some folks feel that we will lose our historical look if these buildings are removed.

It's never too late to publicize the facility problem on SU's campus and the state is not broke. Louisiana has a budget problem that Jindal created and Republican legislators are not willing to fix it.

I do find it amusing that the article was even written. due to the fact that the state has no money to help improve the facilities..

But news is news I guess

Also, in my opinion this affects recruitment. There are high schools with better facilities. I have seen kids and parents say, "Damn your high school had better resources."

I guess you right,

My high school would make a lot of HBCUS look bad, from athletic facilities and academic facilities

And I agree from a recruitment point of view having old facilities does put you in a situation of not recruiting the best and the brightest because we are in the generation of what is new

Could the university not raise funds through a capital campaign?
We're talking a good $90M or so in capital projects that are needed. The needs are itemized in our Board facilities packets.

We raised a record $4M+ from alums last year. So no, that isn't a solution.

Prairie Views football stadium before they decided to build the new one. No pun intended on PV it's just the truth. Hell Ruston High's weight room and athletic upgrades exceeded $5 million.

Billy Laird says that the estimated cost of the upgrades will be around $5 million and will all come from the millage tax renewed last year. No private donations have been used in the current facility upgrades.
