SU completes class, adds two signees
The Southern University men?s basketball team has completed its four-member signing class with two late additions.
Forward Emanuel Njomo from Division II NJCAA national champion Cecil Community College came on board this week, with guard Mariun Price from Harding Academy in Memphis signing late last month.
Njomo (6-foot-6, 235 pounds) averaged 8.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game for Cecil.
?We felt we still needed some size,? Southern coach Rob Spivery said of landing Njomo, who is from Fairfax, Va.
Price (6-foot) averaged 21.5 points and 3.5 assists per game for Harding, which went to the final four of the Division II state playoffs for the second straight season.
Price was a regional co-MVP this season. After averaging 25.1 ppg, Price was named for the second straight year to the Memphis Commercial Appeal?s Best of the Preps, a strong honor considering the area has long been known as a hotbed for basketball talent.
Price, who once hit 43 consecutive free throws, finished with 2,003 points in his career, 28 shy of the school mark. He also finished with 479 rebounds, 248 steals and 215 assists.
In April, SU had already hauled in two players with local ties: 6-5 forward Douglas Scott from Istrouma High and 6-3 guard Joe Holliday, a former Lee High standout, from Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
Southern had three players practice but not play last season: University of Louisiana at Lafayette transfer Chris Davis, a 6-0 guard; Utah Valley State transfer Chike Ekweozor, a 6-7 forward; and 6-4 freshman guard Jazz Williams, who redshirted after playing in three games at the start of the season.
Plus, 6-9 forward Joseph Jack, who would have been a junior last season, is set to return after being sidelined with academic problems for all of last season and much of the 2004-05 season.
In essence, that?s eight new players, and they?ll be tasked with replacing a strong contingent that led the Jaguars to their best season in more than a decade.
