The new law allows each university to basically dictate their own decisions on waiving out of state fees on students. That I-55 waiver, ( Mississippi River Route. (Detroit, Chicago, St. louis, Memphis) is the logical choice for JSU. It is our pipeline for out of state students.

It was planned for PV to increase the enrollment after the federal government agreement with Texas a few years ago on funding the HBCUs. I am hoping that soon the school will increase the number of faculty members so that the student:teacher ratio will stay low or relatively low.

Having a large enrollment may be a bit overrated.

I know SU will waive out-of-state fees if you score 22 or better on the ACT. Mr. Robert Rene (sp) kept in contact with us since my daughter was in the 10th grade. He told us back then SU was working on different processes to help recruit more out-of-state students; he kept on and kept on telling us that my daughter's ACT scores would play a big part and they did. Thank God SU got this policy started right when she was ready to apply and enroll at SU.

I think this will help out a lot. Part of the reason why we were 10,000 strong back in the open admission days is because there were a good number of out-of-state students on the yard.
Aside from selective admission, SU also cut its own throat by increasing out-of-state-fees and eliminating full out-of-state fee waivers. I know that they are correcting this now, so they may be able to reach out to some folks.

There was a time when it was actually cheaper in some cases for a California student to go off to SU or Gram even with out-of-state fees. I don't think that is the case these days.

I can agree that closing admissions is good overall. However, where it backfires is when it leads good students to go elsewhere.

Hypothetically speaking, if the GPA and test scores that a student needs to get into SU are at or around what they may need to get into LSU, SLU, or ULL, then unfortunately those kids are going to those schools. That is unless they have strong SU ties or we are throwing some scholarship money their way. Those that don't have the grades and scores up front simply go to BRCC and then transfer to LSU. Either route, SU is losing what could be some quality graduates. I understand wanting to keep the riff-raff out, but that is nearly impossible even at most PWIs.

SU would still be cheaper than those schools in Cali.

Southern's admissions standards will be raised to 2.5 gpa for Fall 2012, from what I've been told by school officials. And I say it's all the better. Yes, those 10,000 students helped to offset funds, but believe me I've come across a greater percentage of intelligent Southernites recently. I've been impressed! :tup:

If he didn't do well in HS/ACT, he needs to be in one of those summer bridge programs. They work wonders! I attended the one at Tougaloo and it kicked my azz! But after that 6 weeks was over, I was truly ready for college and I never looked back. The best thing is that these programs are free and the grades don't count. Deadlines may have passed already but it's still worth a shot.

Alternatively, at JSU, they will accept him but he will have to enroll into a summer program for kids who don't qualify. If he finishes that program with a 2.5 (I believe), he will be accepted into JSU.

Hypothetically speaking, if the GPA and test scores that a student needs to get into SU are at or around what they may need to get into LSU, SLU, or ULL, then unfortunately those kids are going to those schools. A lot of PWIs have taken our kids. I know for a fact that USM gets a lot kids that would typically go to JSU. However, the thing that we still have to our advantage is that getting a scholarship at HBCUs is easier that at some PWIs but this is why we also need to donate to our development foundations. As long as we have scholarship money, we can still get kids becasue some schools with deep pockets are still offer African Americans free rides. In the end, in this economy, most parents are going to go where the money is. I recently had a kid trying to choose between Missouri and GaTech. He really wanted to go to Tech but Tech only offered to pay 25% of his expenses. Missouri offered to pay 90%. I told his mom to go with the money! HBCUs get a lot of the same scenerios, a kid may want to go to a PWC but when that 3.2 and 25 on the ACT still only gets a partial scholly if that, but a HBCU offers more money, we can get that kid.

I'm not big on who has the highest enrollment. I believe in quality over quantity. Thanks to MetroPhillyTiger for providing those stats.

However, enrollment increase is a MAJOR goal of our President, Dr. Meyers. They have a special task force just to work on enrollment management...new admissions and RETENTION. We are already poised to take the #5 spot from TNState in the fall and we should be challenging FAMU for the top stop in 3-4 years is all goes as planned.

Right - an HBCU event with no soul. lol It's actually amazing to see how many of us attend USM. I'm from Columbia, MS and after graduating high school, most of my classmates decided to stay close to home, so they opted to go to USM instead of Alcorn/Valley/and JSU.

Side note though - of all of the African Americans from my graduating high school class who attended college at an HBCU, (6 to both Alcorn and JSU, none to Valley that year), 100% of us graduated, while the African Americans who chose USM (about 12) did not complete their degree, none finished... :-/

Lol.. Out of my crew, 3 went to USM, I went to JSU. Only 1 of the three at USM finished. However, if not for a football scholly, I would have been right at USM with all of my homeboys from high school. USM does a good job recruiting students. Hattiesburg is more welcoming to students than Jackson to me too.

I don't know what drives black folks to USM, guess they want to get away from home or they want to attend college with white folks, I guess the ice water is colder at USM. When national magazines rank the colleges in Mississippi, academically USM is usually ranked on the same tier as Jackson State.
