Why Does ESPN Do This

Just had a famuan on fb try to wiggle this, too. On the same game. Then he said we make hbcus look bad. 0_0 hmm...pretty sure Bama state and TxSU don't make hbcus look any worse than they could but then...look bad to whom? If you didn't want to see the game...why did you watch? That's not support. That's sign of a deeper problem. Hell...if you live here IN Houston and didn't want to watch, go to one of the many gyms or eateries and drinkeries this mega city has to offer. Or...just be honest and say "I don't like watching other hbcus. Particularly those two." Let your yay be yay...and you nay be...umm...nay. ijs....

Would Valley be one? And if so...with whom? Should Valley be considered or denied based on who they are and where they are located?

Who said anything about Valley? Ya'll sensitive cats kill me. The Valley vs. Southern game was not competitive, so no I would rather they not show that game on tv. The facts are the facts. As a conference with little exposure, why would you NOT want your best teams showcased against each other??? You answer me that. Nobody is tuning in to see gross mismatches and blowouts.

Why would ESPN try to hinder showing games that more people would watch when umm... ya know... they get money based off of ratings? lol

Seems you're sensitive. You didn't get my point. Would Valley be a good matchup? You can know that maybe they aren't the winning-est of programs but they are YOUR hbcu. Maybe you love them. So for you...yeah they would be. Should they be denied if espn comes knocking? I would hope you would say yes. If not then there is a huge and I mean HUGE sycophantic choir seat next to alot of other people from other hbcus who for whatever reason need to THINK it's cool to wave someone else's pompom before their own. I'm east Texas bred. You got me effed up.

You have to be creative for these Thursday games. I see that sTu tried it with Free tickets

They were quite successful in that regard. What else was the athl department supposed to do? IMHO, they did their part.

People in and about Houston are fickle as hell, imho. You'd have to have grown up here(natively), lived here, and been around these people to understand why I call them fickle. Diehards are few and far between and various "cliques" are the norm for this area.

You're tickling me. You're good, lilC. That's the spirit, w/out talking smack or shit, which others are masters of :) . But then again, you're from ETx so I expect a differing HIGHER level from that area anyway :) .

If I went to valley...then it's f@#$ everybody else and Go Devils. Ijs...so I graduated TSU. I love Alcorn. I went there first but I graduated TSU...so yeah..ride that "f" train for everybody else.

Hell, the Astros are in the thick of a pennant race and could only fill the Juice Box up halfway....btw it's right across the street from BBVA.....

Then I just had a back and forth with what I assume to be a TSU alum on Facebook, who tells me she will never go to a game because the tickets are $50. When I pointed out to her that a general admission ticket (where you can pick your seat) only costs a lil over $22 when purchased from the official online box office, she stated that they should just play on campus and go to NRG Stadium for homecoming and big games....So I pointed out the moans and groans that have been repeated about NRG, and she says that all tickets should be general admission and the same price because that's how they were when she was in school. I pointed out that those were likely student tickets and that NRG also has a varying price structure, and I was told I was picking an argument.

I pointed all this out to say that not only are people uninformed, but they will find any excuse to remain uniformed.

My thing with this whole "promote it better" thing.....A simple Google search can tell you who's playing, when they play, where they play, what time it starts, and how much it costs. If you are so hell bent on saying "I woulda been there if I had known", then the information is there for you. In my mind, "marketing the game better" is a cop out for "I wasn't gonna go anyway".

I think you have marketing confused with promotion. While they are related, they are not the same.

Marketing the game better means finding the perfect price point that draws the biggest crowd without losing revenue (i.e., free kids/high school students/free parking for Thursday night games).

I understand the difference. I'm telling you the excuses I hear every week, and they include both of the above. Promoting the game, to me is negated by my comment about using Google to get the info....IMO, marketing the game is negated, in this instance, by the Public Servant Night promotion.

But will better matchups do well on a Thursday? For instance, SU/JSU or PV/GSU (for example) would probably fare better than the current Thursday matchups, but wouldn't have nearly the same draw as they do on a Saturday when the average person's work week is done. Add to that the fact that a TV game is about an hour longer than your average game...I agree, but I wonder if better matchups on a Thursday cancel each other out.

I agree bro. I see it daily here in Houston. Another issue I believe is Houston has so many transplants (Diversity) from across the world... HBCU football is just not a big deal.

However, I still think it is a sad day when you consistently Do Not support your Home Team. I just can't fathom that.

I'm here in Houston now and facts are facts .... if TxSU alums and fans don't care to fill their stadium, then let them look like crap on TV. As an SU grad, I know Mumford will look different on Thursday as compared to Saturday so I don't want a big matchup going on that day. SU-Valley .... fine, SU-UAPB .... cool. vs. Alcorn or Jackson .... HELL NO!

But the whole thread's premise is LITERALLY based on two other schools should get shine over the ones that did. So which is it? Hbcus get shine period...or only certain hbcus get shine? If that's the case...form another conference between those two schools so they can play each other in football only...every week. A match made in heaven.

None of which has anything to do with what you claim people said. Which they did not.

Lmao y'all are hilarious as hell. Thursday night games are always sparse and y'all in here acting like there is some fcs games being broadcasted live on Thursday night being sold out or remotely close.

As for espn choosing better games to broadcast might I remind you that they did several times. They were just on Saturday.

I was at the game last night it was a snooze fest. I try to make the good TSU and PV games. TSU Homecoming should do numbers

Of course they are playing us. Which to me I think is a waste because they could have use that game to schedule a D2 and then have at least two good crowds this year.

Who cares where you're from, all of us are from somewhere. I made the simple statement they could pick better matchups. Anybody with half a brain can see that continuously televising blowouts on Thursday is not beneficial to putting your product in the best of lights. I unlike alot of people can sit kool-aid drinking pride aside and look at reality while still loving my university. Why would I want my ONLY time on National tv to be a 30 plus point beatdown??? That doesn't make good common sense. I will say it again, if you are trying to promote your conference then you want competitive, good games that may serve to attract others that otherwise may have never considered going to your institutions.

Yep the schools choose which games they will play on Thursday at home.

That's what I thought. No team is going to give up a money game for TV. Just hope for the best when the games are announced. If you know you got 1 money game at home outside of HC you ain't giving it up for ESPN.
