Who is the best athlete to come out of your High School or State

Hometown (El Dorado, AR): Lou Brock - famous black baseball player.

I guess Arkansas can claim a part of him since he was actually born there but later moved to Louisiana:

Lou Brock was born in El Dorado, Arkansas. He grew up in Collinston, Louisiana on a poverty stricken cotton plantation where he picked and chopped cotton to help his family survive. After elementary school he attended Union High School in Mer Rouge, LA., where he played basketball, baseball and participated on the math and chemistry teams. After the first semester at Southern University, he lost his acquired academic scholarship when he received a C+ rather than the required B average. During the semester break, he lived on campus with friends and volunteered to retrieve balls for the college baseball team. One day after nearly passing out from exhaustion, the coaches rewarded him for his effort with five batting practice swings. He promptly hit three of the five balls over the fence and was given a full a baseball scholarship on the spot. At Southern, Brock was selected by the United States Olympic Committee to play on the USA Pan American Baseball Team and led Southern University to the NAIA World Series Championship. After college he entered Major League Baseball and for the next 19 years he became one of the greatest players of all-time.

Brock is the father and step/father of five adult children and two granddaughters

Currently Lou Brock is a spring training instructor for the St. Louis Cardinals and he is considered one of major league baseball's finest ambassadors.

Man...you know I was thinking the same name...but this is too old school for some folk....Dude was from my hometown and was All-State as a WR for JS CLark High, an all district forward for the basketball..and at the same time was running 13 flat 100 meters hurdles.......on grass.

Best highschool athlete I have ever seen, bar none.

I was a young tyke then but could vividly remember so many people elations when the Southern University and Claude T. Paxton coached (Southern U. & J.S. Clark) hurdler broke the world record. Also I know a little bit about that huge yearly "Relay Carnival" that J.S. Clark-Opelousas once was lauded for. As a matter of fact, I believe that Scotlandville High was nipped by J.S. Clark for the state championship on Southern U. track (pre-integration) prior to "Dice" arrival on the yard.

Mwelde Moore is the best from my high school. (Belaire Baton Rouge) Currently with the NFL Vikings.

Too many to name from the state.

My high school: Ascension Catholic

Germaine "Juice" Williams -- leading rusher in Louisiana high school history (late 80s to early 90s); he ran for 8,000 or 9000 yards. He signed with LSU, but never reached expectations (I think this was the Curley Hallman era). Signed with Cowboys in the league.

I haven't seen Juice in a few years...what is he up to?

You know when I first wrote my post, I started to say "some will say Hokie was the best player out of Baker".. LOL
I played against Hokie, but the best runningback on that team was Leroid Jones. They both went on to play for LSU. Hokie excel there, Leroid faded away. Btw, Hokie also won the district 1oo yard dash his senior year. And don't forget your QB on that team also, Terry Felton was a first round draft pick(RedSox?) that year but never panned out in the pros.

From Thibodaux High School...

Eric Andolsek (sp?) R.I.P.....All-Pro OL for the Detroit Lions

Also Mark Davis who played at Texas Tech and in the NBA for the 76ers for a short time...

Robber I have to disagree, Although Mcnair is a good choice but not World Reconized like PAYTON, RICE........
When I think "athlete", I think more than just one sport. Steve was a bona fide NFL and MLB prospect. Pretty good at basketball. I don't know what Payton and Rice can do besides play football. Steve is the kinda guy that if you put him on a soccer team, his azz woulda be Pele. One other thing. I've always read about how hard Rice and Payton worked to be as good as they are. Steve didn't have to do that. He was always the best athele everywhere he went. In college, he'd get drunk Sunday through Friday and wear the SWAC out on Saturday.

Yeah, it was "Baby Jordan". Last I heard Harold was running a pretty successful Real Estate business in the L.A. and Miami areas.

Hometown/H.S. - Norman Bradford, RB (football/basketball); Grambling

Robert Williams TE, LB, P (football/baseball); Grambling

Both starred at my alma maters, Jonesboro-Hodge H.S. and were blue-chip prospects and Parade all-americans.

And, although I never saw him play personally, but my cousin Jerry "Grey Ghost" Robinson is considered, by my elders and old heads, to be the best athlete ever to come out of Jackson High School (all-black H.S. before integration) or Jonesboro, La. He starred at Grambling during late 50's/early 60's then played 10+ years with Buffalo Bills.

As far as greatest athletes to come out of Louisiana, that's a tough one, but I am biased toward the "G." So, I would start with our Hall of Famers Buck Buchanan, Willie Davis, Willie Brown, Charile Joiner, or Willis Reed. In their prime, each dominated their respective era.

Oh, I forgot about frat from LSU...Shaq, who also dominates his era and is a future Hall of Famer. And, Bill Russell played high school ball in La., I think, before enrolling at Univ. of San Francisco.

Your Tigers ended my high school career. I have a bad memory of Bradford from that game.

Man, that is a good question. I see his brothers from time to time (they do roof work). I know Juice did graduate from LSU.

AHS - Brad Hill. The one some of you "clowned" big time on this board. Some athletes are not the "brightest" crayons in the box. :look:

Chris Jackson - Point Guard NBA Lottery Draft Pick (#3 overall) Denver Nuggets.
Cedric Scott - Defensive Lineman from Southern Miss Drafted by NY Giants.
Lem Barney - JSU standout and NFL legend. (though he graduated from the segregated 33rd Ave High School which later merged with the all white Gulfport East school).

The best highschool athlete to come out of Mississippi is Marcus Dupree. McNair and Payton had better careers, but neither of them were as good as Dupree coming out of Highschool. This man was about 6'3 240 with blazing speed and cut-back ability. He remains arguably the most highly recruited athlete in history.

From my HS(Provine), Fred Smoot.
